"Bangladesh may win WC 2023" - Ranatunga

Just read the news: the legend Arjuna Ranatunga firmly believes that Bangladesh has a great possibility to win the World Cup 2023 [Source: Prothom-Alo].

He also mentioned that BD has improved a lot and for that some credit goes to SL players as they were pretty regular in BD Domestic League in 80's (whatever that means). And BD certainly has lot of potential cricketers. Since the 2023 WC will be held in sub-continent (India), BD will have some advantages. [Pardon my lame translation]

Not impossible. But what BCB do to develop a team between then and now will be the decisive factor.

In this same interview, Ranatunga also advises BD should send its Under 19 and Under 23 teams to play a lot of cricket, and keep this group separate from national team.

But current BCB administration has forgotten about A Team, Under 19 team. And every youngster being directly promoted to NT without much preparation.

^ pretty accurate. Saifuddin is a prime example of this. I feel like he could have been nurtured a bit more. He is too raw ATM.

T20 is fine, as long as hes rotated in the squad for T20 he'll be fine

Our feeble batsmen fall apart very easily. Our bowlers still don't know how to bowl the right line and length. We keep picking up jodu modu.

We had Junaid Rakibul Naeem

Now we have better batsman and better bowler and our fielding will soon become world class.

Just think about this. By 2023 miraz, Saif, Shanto Pinak would be matured cricketers.

We can only get better. Our batsman already have improved in this department.

When was the last time we were bundled out for sub 100 scores?

10 years back, we were riding on Akram Khan, Bashar and Anamul's batting. 10 Years after it's Shakib, Tamim and co. It's a huge difference isn't it? 8 more years, you'll see a bigger difference.

I can't really see tamim still playing 2023 WC since he seems unfit these days after a long innings but Mushy and Shakib probably will still be around. Miraz will be mature (his batting surely will come along nicely by then and will do what shakib does atm). Other better youngsters will show up and take over the team. 5 years is a long time. Nothing is impossible.

I don't believe we will win anything until we start winning trophies at the age group level or at least reach finals of age group level tournaments consistently. We were never short of ability, it has always been the mental aspect that has plagued our success. At U19 levels we always seem to beat strong teams in a bilateral series but then fail to deliver at knock-out stages of ICC tournaments. How many times have we played the "Plate" leg of the tournament while the big boys played for the real trophy? Even in the recent emerging cup we failed to do anything. We actually have no experience in the camp (players, coaches, BCB etc) about how execute in a high pressure final in a major ICC trophy, just look at what we did with Saifuddin in the drawn game with Pakistan. He hit a full toss for a single to ensure a draw. So even if by chance we reach the latter stage of a tournament, I expect us to make some dumb choices out of sheer panic.

Overall I think we will need a whole new breed of young cricketers that are used to playing finals and knock-out games and winning ICC trophies for us to instill and transfer that mental toughness and mindset. Until that happens I expect us to get close but choke when it really matters.

Well we are beginning to win regularly at home and learning to win abroad. This is clearly visible. The question is why it took us so long to be where we are today? In short, we always had talent but not intelligent, honest and qualified people running the game. You're absolutely right about the lack of U19 success and its effects. The board doesn't even appoint a long term U19 specialist and recognized head coach. The last U19 bunch had enough talent to win that U19 WC held at home. They lost against WI whom they thrashed in a bilateral series just prior to the tourney. Who was our headcoach for the U23 Asia cup? A tours and Academy is totally neglected while BCB ring-leader and the gang busy travelling the world and enjoying all paid holidays.
