Tigers Tame Toothless Zimbabwe Attack
CHITTAGONG, BANGLADESH:
Bangladesh have posted their biggest total in international Test cricket when they were dismissed for an impressive 488 by Zimbabwe in Chittagong.
They increased their tally by 208 runs from their overnight score of 280 in just two sessions of play, but were eventually all out shortly after tea on the second day of the first Test.
Captain Habibul Bashar top scored with 94 runs, while Rajin Saleh contributed with 89 and Mohammad Rafique hit four sixes in his 69. Bangladesh had previously passed the 400-mark just twice in 34 Tests, against India in 2000 and the West Indies last year.

Bangladesh build strong platform
First Test, Chittagong, day two (stumps):
Bangladesh 488 v Zimbabwe 84-4
Live scorecard
Rafique's all-round contribution put Bangladesh in command
Bangladesh established a strong position in their quest for a maiden Test victory, as Zimbabwe closed 404 runs behind at 84-4.
They began by extending their overnight 280-4 by 208 in just over two sessions, for their highest Test total of 488.
Rajin Saleh led the way with 89 and Mohammad Rafique hit four sixes in his 69, sharing stands of 69 and 62 with Khaled Mashud and Mashrafe bin Mortaza.
Zimbabwe then lost four wickets inside 21 overs before a slight recovery.
The home side had only passed 400 twice previously in 34 Tests, scoring 400 against India in their inaugural match in 2000 and 416 in the West Indies last year.
They suffered an early setback when Aftab Ahmed was lbw to Christopher Mpofu for six in the third over of play.

Bangladesh in strong position to win first Test
CHITTAGONG, January 7: Bangladesh ended the second day of the first Test against Zimbabwe on Friday in a strong position to win their first Test match.
Bangladesh, who have lost 31 of their previous 34 Tests, were bowled out for 488 -- their highest score -- just after tea then reduced the visitors to 84 for four at stumps.
Zimbabwe, who have been severely weakened by a dispute between their board and several leading white players, are playing their first Test after an International Cricket Council (ICC) suspension of their Test programme ended on January 1.
All rounder Mohammad Rafique was the chief destroyer for the home side bludgeoning six boundaries and four sixes in his 69 before he took two wickets in the final session.
Rafique, who shared a blazing 62-run partnership with Mashrafe Mortaza (48) as Bangladesh's batsmen plundered the inexperienced Zimbabwe attack in the afternoon, trapped Vusi Sibanda (12) and debutant Graeme Cremer (nought) lbw to leave the visitors in deep trouble.
Zimbabwe, who need a further 205 runs to avoid the follow on, began positively with opener Stuart Matsikenyeri smashing five boundaries in his 28 runs before he was caught by Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar off Tapash Baisya with the score on 31.
Sibanda was trapped in front by Rafique before Barney Rogers was run out unfortunately when a shot from Hamilton Masakadza was deflected by bowler Enamul Haq Jr on to the stumps.

TIGERS TEAR ZIMS APART
Friday 7th January 2005
First Test
Chittagong
Bangladesh 488 (Habibul Bashar 94, Rajin Saleh 89, Mohammad Rafique 69, Nafis Iqbal 56, C B Mpofu 4-109) v Zimbabwe 84-4
All-rounder Mohammad Rafique hit a sparkling half-century and grabbed two key wickets as Bangladesh gained control of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Chittagong.
The tourists slumped to 84-4 at the close on day two after finally dismissing Bangladesh for 488 just after tea, requiring another 205 to avoid the follow-on.
Left-arm spinner Rafique removed batsmen Vusimuzi Sibanda and Graeme Cremer lbw after scoring 69 off 98 deliveries, including six boundaries and four sixes in an eighth wicket partnership of 62 with Mashrafe Mortaza.
The latter was closing in on a half-century of his own, having made 48 from just 44 balls before he was the last man out, bowled by leg-spinner Cremer.
Earlier, Rajin Saleh added 29 to his overnight score before Stuart Matsikenyeri caught him off his own bowling for 89, having added 69 with Khaled Mashud - another batsman to fall short of a landmark when he became Cremer's first wicket in Test cricket for 49.
Matsikenyeri got the Zimbabwe reply off to a swashbuckling start with five fours in his 28, but he played one shot too many and was caught by skipper Habibul Bashar off the bowling of Tapash Baisya.
Rookie Barney Rogers had a less happy time of it though on his debut - taking 28 balls to get off the mark before being unfortunately run out backing up at the non-striker's end having scored just five.
Rafique stepped in to take two further wickets before the close, although Hamilton Masakadze remained unbeaten on 28 having struck four boundaries.

Tigers Heading For First Test Triumph
09 January 2005
CHITTAGONG, BANGLADESH: Bangladeshi cricketer Tapash Baisya (R) celebrates with his teammates after dismissing unseen Zimbabwean batsman V. Sibanda during the fourth day of the first Test match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe at M.A Aziz Stadium in Chittagong, 09 January 2005. At stumps Zimbabwe are 46 runs for the loss of three wickets as they chase a total of 381 runs to win after Bangladesh declared their second innings. AFP PHOTO/Farjana K. GODHULY (Photo credit should read FARJANA K. GODHULY/AFP/Getty Images)
Bangladesh have a first-ever Test victory in their sights after setting Zimbabwe a huge target on the fourth day in Chittagong.
Needing 381 for victory, Zimbabwe were then reduced to 46 for three by stumps. After Bangladesh had declared on 204 for nine in their second innings, Zimbabwe's reply began disastrously with debutant Barney Rogers falling to a fourth-ball duck and Vusi Sibanda (0) also failing as they slumped to two for two, Tapash Baisya taking both wickets. Stuart Matsikenyeri and Hamilton Masakadza restored some parity with a third-wicket stand worth 40 but Enamul Haque jnr broke through to dismiss Matsikenyeri late on. Masakadza remains on 26 not out with Brendon Taylor (0no), but it appears Bangladesh are heading for a significant victory on the fifth and final day.
Restarting on 308 for eight, Zimbabwe added just four runs to their total before being bowled out. Douglas Hondo and Mluleki Nkala were the last to go with Mohammad Rafique finishing with five for 65.

Bangladesh in sight of first test victory
CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, Jan 9, 2005 (Reuters)
Paceman Tapash Baisya took two wickets to put Bangladesh in sight of their first test win at the close of the fourth day of the first test against Zimbabwe on Sunday.
Zimbabwe, chasing 381 to win, were 46 for three in their second innings with a day's play remaining.
Baisya removed Barney Rogers for a duck, when he was caught by substitute fielder Manjural Islam Rana, and then trapped Vusimuzi Sibanda lbw also for nought.
Stuart Matsikenyeri was later bowled by spinner Enamul Haque Junior for 20.
Bangladesh, seeking their first win in their 35th test, had earlier stretched their lead after declaring their second innings on 204 for nine with Habibul Bashar topscoring with 55 and Elton Chigumbura taking five for 54.
In the morning session, Zimbabwe lost their final two wickets for the addition of just four runs to finish on 312 all out in their first innings after Bangladesh had made 488.
Zimbabwe are playing their first test since they were suspended by the International Cricket Council last June for fielding a weakened team after a dispute between their board and several leading white players.

BANGLADESH ON THE BRINK OF FIRST WIN
Sunday 9th January 2005
First Test Match
Chittagong
Bangladesh 488 (Habibul Bashar 94, Rajin Saleh 89, Mohammad Rafique 69, Nafis Iqbal 56, C B Mpofu 4-109) & 204-9 dec (Habibul Bashar 55, E Chigumbura 5-54) v Zimbabwe 312 (T Taibu 92, E Chigumbura 71, Mohammad Rafique 4-65) & 46-3
Bangladesh need just seven more wickets on the final day against Zimbabwe in Chittagong to clinch their first ever Test victory.
The hosts had their opponents reeling at 46-3 at the close of the fourth day's play as the African's struggled in their attempts to chase an improbable victory target of 381.
Opening bowler Tapash Baisya captured two of the three wickets to fall as he had debutant Barney Rogers caught for a duck and trapped Vusi Sibanda leg before.
Baisya's double strike left Zimbabwe reeling at 2-2 and although Hamilton Masakadza ended the day unbeaten on 26, the loss of Stuart Matsikenyeri just before close was a big blow for the tourists.
