Poll 2: #8 or #9 Which one do you prefer (ODI ranking)
I hope those who participated in Pole 1 would participate in Poll 2.
Some of us want our cricket team to aim for #1, create process or programs to achieve that. Through continuous improvement we would hope they reach that goal. However, at this point, this goal is unrealistic for our team. I may be wrong but I think even SL has not achieve that #1 ranking as of yet.
Others, do not care about ranking at all. It is just a game. As long as we are competitive and entertaining (filling in the seats), we would be satisfied.
Then there is Champions Trophy thingi. Which may be scrapped all together in near future.
So I ask you fans, what do you prefer?

The way WI is declining it will be a shame not to hold that #8 spot permanently in the next 4 years
our cricket fanatic fans at least deserve the #8 spot

believe me it wont happen in 10 years..if it does every logic in the world would fail
we are talking about #1 here..not a test series or odi series or even a WC win

The Ranking number itself is basically an indication of where you are compared to other teams. In reality out 8/9 ranking has more to do with the fall of the West Indies than it does with our rise.
What really matters is the points. 100 is an indication of a consistant 50/50 team. We are still quite a ways from that. At 68 compared to AUS to top the charte in teh 128-130 zone, it means that we are just as inconsistant at losing as Australia are at winning.
So here are what the rankings mean to me:
- #8 is a big deal as not even ZIM ever achieved that. It puts to end the whole G8 thing and forces ICC to make decisions with us in mind as opposed to just cutting everything off with the typical 8 teams
- 100 ranking points is the goal.
- Would much rather see us in semis or better of major tournaments (if there are any outhside of the WC) than having a high ranking and never making it that far. I'm sure South Africa, England and New Zealand would agree. I don't think NZ would care about being #7 if they won the world cup
- We do have to look to the ranking as a measuring stick and make sure we minimize hiccups against those below us and start beating them CONVINCINGLY. We need to be able to start to punch below our weight and score knockouts at a more regular basis.

Another note, the poll options are flawed because choosing one doesn't necessarily mean you don't agree with the other options.

great points..and i agree 100 rating points should be our goal..but one step at a time..we should now look to maintain that 70 rating points through out 2011 and somehow get to the 80

That is very reasonable as all that will take is beating those below us and maybe scoring 2-4 wins on teams ranked above us.

with Bangladesh reasonable thinking is a safe bet
and not only beating guys lower then us will do..consistent losing vs big boys will also get our rating points down..so to get to 80 we'll have to win at least another series vs any big team(even wi will do) and also will have to avoid to many white washes

There is a catch-22 here. According to the coaches (e.g., Ian Pont) we do not expect to win against G8 as we are lower ranked. That means, in order to climb higher in the ranking, we need to play against non-G8 like Zimbabwe, Ireland, Kenya. This is again very tricky. We do not gain much by winning against this lower ranked teams, while we may concede huge loss in ratings for our occasional defeats against them. Although we can ask the ICC to cancel all our schedules against the G8 so that we can maximize the rating things by playing against sure teams like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Papua New Gunea. Playing against Afgans and Canada may be too risky.

What if Siddons is coaching Papua New Guinea and they are chains 70 against us?

I don't think our rise was purely due to WI's fall.. We did beat few higher ranked teams and playing against Zimbabwe does not improve our rankings.. We did beat England, New Zealand like teams which contributed towards our ranking. If we have one win against Autralia, we will be few points ahead of WI and we will hold on to that for some time...
The reality is, we are number 8-9 team. We do not have the players in the mix who can push us to the number 5 in the next 2 years unless all in a sudden a Shakib or Mashrafee pops up from somewhere... Yes, we can become number 6 team in the next 4 years if we do un-earth some fresh talents this year and have good coaching, facilities, infrastructure and planning in place.
For us to reach anything beyond 5.... its not likely. Its almost like thinking can Bangladesh become China like econonomy.. possible in theory but it will take few light years or India, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan to stop playing cricket!!

- I am from the Pat Riley camp. "there is winning and there is misery."
- If done properly, we should be a cricketing power within a decade. "Properly" is the key word here. Even with stutter-steps like in the past, natural progression should take us higher because we have a few top players who should reach their peak by the 2019 WC. I don't think winning the 2015 or 2019 Cup is a complete pipe dream.
