All Time Best Bangalees : A BBC Bangla Survey
BBC Bangla Service has done a survey on its listeners and found the following order for all time best Bangalees.
Every day they are declaring one name and so far they went down to number seven.
Here is the list.
30. Polli Kobi Jasimuddin
29. Masterda Surya Sen
28. (Jointly) Deshbondhu Chittaranjan Das & Saurav Ganguli
27. Jeebonananda Das
26. Sheikh Hasina
25. Shilpacharya Zainal Abedeen
24. Golam Azam (??!!)
23. Sharat Chandra Chatterjee
22. Gen. Ataul Gani Osmani
21. Banga-beer Abdul Quader Siddiqui
20. Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardi
19. Ziaur Rahman
18. Ateesh Deepankar
17. Shwami Vivekananda
16. Dr. Muhammad Shaheedullah
15. All 1952 Bhasha Shaheeds
14. Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen
13. Satyajeet Roy
12. Lalan Shah
11. Teetumir
10. Raja Rammohan Roy
09. Maolana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani
08. Eeshyar Chandra Vidyasagar
07. Sir Jagadeesh Chandra Basu
The name on #24 is really painful and might lose the respect for this list.
Speculation for the next six names (not in order):
All 1971 shaheeds and freedom fighters, Shubhash Bose, A. K. Fazlul Haque, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Quazi Nazrul Islam, Rabindranath Tagore

the #24 can be #1 or two, if the list is about the worst bangalee. first may be mir jafor. i'm not sure, they both will have a neck to neck chance of winning. but i really don't understand how it came in this list.

It would have been nice to see the name of Nirad C Choudhary on the list. And finding #24 has lost all the credibilities of the survey.

The sixth name has been Begum Rokeya. Also the name Shubash Bose might not appear in the list.

Navareen is right. Golam Azam should be #1 from the bottom.
In my opinion Some other great Bengalis are (in addition to the names already
mentioned):
Fazlur Rahmal Khan (Structural Engineer
of Sears Tower)
Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee
Ustad Alauddin Khan
Ali Akbar Khan
Ravi Shankar
Niaz Morshed
Dr. Muhammad Yunus
Pritilata Waddadar
Modhushudon Dutta
Dr. Quazi Motahar Hossain
Samad (football player)

Begum Rokeya has been the sixth in the list.
Actually, BBC started from the position 20, (not 30). However, they have mentioned other positions from 30 to 21 oneday. Possibly number of votes were very few and from statistical view point, they do not have much values.
For a change, can we know what more female names you have in mind, which might be included in the list?

All Time Best Bangalee Women
Interesting question posed by Shubho....
Who are the notable Bengali women?
Some off the top of my head:
Begum Rokeya (Author, Feminist)
Begum Sufiya Kamal (Author, Activitist)
Mahasweta Devi (Author)
Pritilata Waddadar (Chittagong Uprising)
Jahanara Imam (Author, Activitist)
Kalpana Dutta (Chittagong Uprising)
Irene Khan (Activist, Amnesty)
Unsung Heroines of 1971
Jhumpa Lahiri (Author)
Arundhati Roy (/1/2 Bengali, Author, Activitist)
Angela Gomez (of Bachte Shekha, Activist)
Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana (Bangladesh HC, ruled against Fatwa)
Advocate Sigma Huda (Lawyer, Activist - first female lawyer)
Dr. Neelima Ibrahim (Activitist)
Begum Razia Khan (Activist)
Rabeya Bhuiyan (Lawyer)
Barrister Salma Sobhan (Ain-O-Salish Kendra, Lawyer, Social worker)
And I forgot the name of the lady who swam the English Channel so many years ago.

Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar.
Why do bangalis pack their lists with a lot of dead serious people and frightfully dominated by the inevitable politician.
Americans regulary and inevitably will include a healthy bunch of good looking actors and actresses. With a healthy dose of new and teeny candidates.
So why not us?

I thought the list started from 20 as well like abh said. The rest do not count... Sheik Hasina.. Please! above 20 are dudh bhat.
I have been following this one too.....
Mujib hasn't been mentioned yet.. that means he will be from 1-5! He might be 3 or even 2
Tagore will obviously be numero uno... Nazrul 2 or 3? come on ppl predict the positon! It's fun...

The 5th has been Shubhas Bose. My early speculation that he may not get a place in top 5 has been wrong.
Now the list has come to an interesting stage. Only 4 places remianing, but still many possible names.
