Default Under-19 World Cup in Australia 2012

Sri Lanka meets Bangladesh in first game of ICC U-19 World Cup

CRICKET: Dubai, Feb. 25: Four Asian rivals will go head-to-head in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast with Sri Lanka meeting Bangladesh at the Allan Border Field and Pakistan will take on Afghanistan at the John Blanck Oval in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup that will open its campaign with India meeting the West Indies on August 12.

India has been clubbed with Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea and the West Indies in Group 'C', and will play its first match at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville, Queensland.

India has reached the zenith of glory at this tournament twice -Mohammad Kaif put his hands on the glittering trophy in Sri Lanka in 2000 and then Virat Kohli led the team to a well-deserved triumph in Malaysia in 2008.

India will play its second match against Zimbabwe on August 14 at the same venue, two days before taking on Papua New Guinea at Endeavour Park 1.

Defending champion Australia will aim to match Pakistan's achievement when it launches the defence of the title against traditional rival and former champion England on the opening day of the 16-day tournament on August 11.

Together with Australia and England, also in action in Townsville on the opening day will be Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea who will face each other at Endeavour Park 1.

Australia is the most successful team in the history of the under-19 Cricket World Cup, having won the title thrice in 1988, 2002 and 2010. However, Pakistan is the only side which has won back-to-back titles when it won the laurels in 2004 and 2006 in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, respectively. "In 1988 the event was staged as part of the Australian bi-centenary celebrations and it is now one of our focal tournaments providing the best young cricketers in the world with an opportunity to test their skills," ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said. The 16 teams have been divided into four groups with the top two progressing to the Super League quarter-finals while the two bottom teams from each group qualify for the Plate Championship Quarter-finals. The winners of the Super League quarter-finals will qualify for the semi-finals whereas the losing quarter-finalists will play in the Super League Play-offs. The winners of the Plate Championship quarter-finals will play in the Plate Championship semi-finals while the beaten quarter-finalists will participate in the Plate Championship play-offs.

48 matches
A total of 48 matches, including 24 in the first round, 12 in the Super League and 12 in the Plate Championship will be played at eight venues -Tony Ireland Stadium, Endeavour Park 1, Endeavour Park 2 (all in Townsville), Allan Border Field, Peter Burge Oval (Red lands DCC), WEP Harris Oval (In Brisbane) John Blanck Oval and Kev Hackney Oval (on the Sunshine Coast).

The Super League final is slated for Augeust 26, two days after the Plate final.

The ICC under-19 Cricket World Cup 2014 will be staged in the United Arab Emirates.

We did well in this tournament under McIness and de Winter. After that BCB appointed local coaches in the last two tournaments and we flopped. Why did we flop? Could it be that the last few batches didnt have enough quality players? Or can a coach have significant influence like McIness and De Winter did?

We were the favourite to WIN the U19 cup last year. Only because of crappy captaincy and crappy coaching staff cost us the cup and got kicked in our a$$$.

Mahmudul Hasan was the captain and i will never forget the loss again WI/Pak U19.

Slightly off topic:

Does ESPN3 telecast U19 WC?

We'll need to knock of either SA or SL to even make it to the next round. This will be an interesting tourney.

A very while ago. Uses x-rays and skeletal maturity to validate age. The days of sending hirsute 2o somethings to beat up on pre-teens at the Gothe cup are long over. Statistically, the accuracy of these tests ate +/- 2 years.

Aware of the veracity of 'Bone Age' testing, and that FIFA/ICC etc are becoming very stringent with this particular issue - just worried with the propensity of parents here to bump down the age of children a couple of years, if we were playing 19 year olds in u-17 comps and so forth.

It's only a couple of years, but those two years are a huge factor, specially at that age level.

In cricket actually this is not the problem for BD. The problem now is playing
underage players in the national camp.

Could that be why we have flopped last two tournaments? Or was it bad coaching? Or where the players not good enough?

I think the players are of proper age. A cousin of my who saw Eng U-19 team come to BD some years ago said that they many of them were at least 22/23 at that point

Anyways...getting away from the age discussion.

Who are our big hopes for this tournament? It's in Australia, so not feeling too positive, our senior level players, struggle against pace and movement, so can't expect the kids to do much better.

Suppose defeating Namibia, and putting up a good show against the other 2, with some good performances is about the best we can hope for.

i know this sound weirds but with tournament like BPL, many young cricketers, esp in the age groups will be stirred to work even harder.

Theyll be keen on doing well in the U-19 WC so that the franchises notice them

we should target to beat SL and India...SA are a strong side I believe, but it was not so long ago we were the best team asides from India (the Tamim, Mushy, Shakib class).

16 teams? This is age cricket. At least this is where they should play up to top 20 teams. Stop cutting them out! IDC how bad they are. This is where it will star.
