Hey guys...
The final match of the 2007 shall commence in less that 36 hours, and as I sit here, watching the rickshaws creating traffic jams on the narrow roads of Banani(in Dhaka), I can not help feel a touch of sadness...The greatest sporting event, for me personally, is about to end....

So now I have decided to create this thread that shall focus on the great players of World Cup 2007 by creating a 'DREAM TEAM' thread (with players from Bangladesh and other countries...)

Here is my dream team...(in batting order)

That's pretty much it, except I would probably push Hayden up to #2 and ponting up to 3, drop gilchrist and kallis and bring fleming and sangakkara in at #4 and #5 respectively. i still think razzak could be more effective than hogg, given the kind of support that hogg receives from the quickies in his team, so that's another change i'd make.

mortaza, or any other bangladeshi player, doesn't make it to this team.

edit: oh and my captain would be fleming.

yes, as honest as one can be. there are 'better' quickies deserving to be named to this kind of team for this WC. Razzak should be the only choice from Bangladesh, if going by performances in the tourny, as the 2nd spinner after Murali. True that Hogg has a better supporting cast around him, but couldn't ignore his lead of 10+ wickets on Razzak.

Surprised nobody's mentioned Clarke. He's averaging about 90 with a strike rate of over 100.

Clarke's avg is definitely hyped up due to the number of innings he stayed not out in. Credit goes more to his team mates who bat so well that they just keep the remaining few overs for him to play and stay not out for most of the matches!

And the SR of 100+ is definitely due to him playing too many death overs. Simple.

I don't necessarily agree, Kabir. If we're not going to count not outs, then we should take them away from every player! Even if you take out his four not outs, he still averages 40 with 2 scores in the 90s, a 60, a 55, a 49 and a 41. That's pretty respectable compared to what some of the other middle order batsmen have been getting. As for his strike rate, it's because he can rotate the strike and steal a single or two every ball, not because he's there at the death. I published some stats here the other day that showed that even though he has a strike rate of over 100 and an average , he has scored less than 40% of his runs in boundaries. In fact one of the criticisms of Michael Clarke is that he's not a power player and is not suitable for the death overs. I wasn't surprised to see first Symmo and then Watto promoted ahead of him today.

But I would have a Clarke-type bloke in my middle order any day - someone who is stable, can rotate the strike, put pressure on the fielders, and keep the scoreboard ticking over.

I feel these guys had the best form over the tournament. Despite his electrifying game today, Gilly's had a woeful tournament so I couldn't pick him. I've gone for two slingers in Malinga and Tait and will be relying to Murali, McGrath and Styris to provide the control.

Okay, I see your point about his single taking capability. It shows his talent. But I don't necessarily agree about his average. I don't mind if a few players have some unbeaten innings. For example, if it's a Bangladeshi player at #5, where our top order would fail for many cases, and he stays unbeaten, I would give him more credits than an Australian player at #5 being unbeaten. The reason is, Australian top order is strong, and for the most part the middle order gets only a tiny part of the innings to play, and they remain unbeaten.

Here's the innings list for Australia for the world cup: Aus 334/6; Aus 358/5; Aus 377/6; Aus 322/6; Aus 106/0; Aus 248/3; Aus 92/1; Aus 232/3; Aus 348/6; Aus 153/3; Aus 281/4;

In most of these, the middle order finished the matches. So in most cases, the middle order batsmen remained unbeaten. So does it mean the middle order batsmen are strong? Yes, but not necessarily to the extent that they'll have an avg of around 90.

The only thing I'm trying to point out is, if there's a vast majority of the innings where the player remains unbeaten under the Australian circumstances, the number may be a little skewed. As they say, stats never speak the whole truth
