ভালো একটা চাকরি। গুলশানে ফ্ল্যাট। বারিধারার আমেরিকান ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুলে স্ত্রীর শিক্ষকতা। ভেবেছিলেন, স্ত্রী-দুই সন্তানসহ অন্তত বছর চারেকের জন্য ঢাকাই হবে ঠিকানা। কিন্তু সব ‘এলোমেলো’ করে দিল ব্রিসবেন থেকে আসা বিজনেস ডেভেলপমেন্ট ম্যানেজারের চাকরির প্রস্তাবটা। বিসিবি একাডেমির কোচ হিসেবে দুই বছরের চুক্তি শেষ হওয়ার দুই মাস আগেই তাই বাংলাদেশ ছাড়ছেন রিচার্ড ম্যাকিন্স। অস্ট্রেলিয়ার ফ্লাইট ধরবেন ২৮ এপ্রিল।

আগে আগে চলে যাচ্ছেন বলে খুব যে হতাশা আছে, তা নয়। ব্রিসবেনে তাঁর বাড়ি, পরিবার-পরিজনও। সেখান থেকে আসা চাকরির প্রস্তাবটা ম্যাকিন্স লুফেই নিয়েছেন বলতে পারেন। তবে দেশে ফিরে গেলেও বাংলাদেশ কখনো না কখনো তাঁকে স্মৃতিকাতর করবেই। দুই দফায় চার বছরের মতো থেকেছেন। এ দেশের ক্রিকেটকে কাছ থেকে দেখেছেন। চাইলে ‘বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটকে যেমন দেখেছি’জাতীয় একটা বই-ই লিখে ফেলতে পারেন! কাল দুপুরে গুলশানে তাঁর ফ্ল্যাটে রিচার্ড ম্যাকিন্সের সঙ্গে আলাপচারিতা থেকে কাল্পনিক সেই বইয়ের সম্ভাব্য কয়েকটা অধ্যায় সাজিয়েও ফেলা যায়—

বাংলাদেশ ও বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেট: ২০০৩ থেকে ২০০৫ যেমন দেখেছেন, সেটার সঙ্গে গত দুই বছরের অভিজ্ঞতার তুলনা করতেই পারেন। দ্বিতীয়টি এগিয়ে থাকলেও ফিরছেন একটা হতাশা নিয়েই, ‘প্রথমবার এসে আমি যে রকম ভূমিকা রাখতে পেরেছিলাম, এবার সম্ভবত সেটা পারিনি।’ না পারার কারণগুলোর বেশির ভাগই অক্রিকেটীয়। হরতাল, প্রিমিয়ার লিগ নিয়ে ক্লাবগুলোর টালবাহানা। এসব দেখে বুঝে গেছেন বাংলাদেশের বাস্তবতাও, ‘একটা দেশ হিসেবে ২০১৩ সালটা বাংলাদেশের জন্য খুব কঠিন ছিল। রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতি খুব খারাপ ছিল এ সময়।’
তবে বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেট নিয়ে ম্যাকিন্স খুবই আশাবাদী। যদিও সেই আশার স্বরলিপিতে উপসংহার হতে পারে এই কথাটি, ‘আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটে বাংলাদেশের ভালো দিন আসে ঠিকই। কিন্তু একটা ভালো দিন আর একটা খারাপ দিনের মধ্যে পার্থক্যটা এখনো অনেক বেশি।’

বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটার: সবাইকে নিয়ে বললেন না। তবে সাকিব আল হাসান ও মুশফিকুর রহিম নাম দুটি বললেন বেশ বড় গলায়। আগেরবার এঁরা ছিলেন ম্যাকিন্সের ছাত্র। এবার এসে দেখলেন তাঁদের হাতেই বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটের পতাকা। বাকিদের চেয়ে দুজনকে আলাদাও করতে পারেন সহজেই, ‘প্রতিভাবান ক্রিকেটার বাংলাদেশে অনেক আছে। কিন্তু সাকিব-মুশফিক নিজেদের আলাদা করতে পেরেছে মূলত তাদের মানসিকতা দিয়ে।’

কী সেই মানসিকতা? সাকিব-মুশফিক হারতে পছন্দ করেন না। খেলাটির প্রতি তাঁদের মতো নিবেদনও আর কারও নেই, ‘সেরা খেলোয়াড় হয় তারাই, খেলাটার প্রতি যারা নিবেদিত। নিজেকে আরও ভালো করার চেষ্টা এবং আগ্রহ যাদের প্রতিনিয়ত থাকে। মুশফিক আর সাকিব সে কারণেই সবচেয়ে ধারাবাহিক।’ ভালো দল হয়ে উঠতে হলে বাংলাদেশের এ রকম অন্তত পাঁচ-সাতজন ক্রিকেটারের প্রয়োজন দেখেন ম্যাকিন্স।

The thing is these boys should hit the books hard at this point of their lives. No girls. Then video tapes. Hours of hours of video footages of the greats. How they set up a batsman or how a batsman gets in to the grove. No need to rewrite.

He is probably taking that job because he isnt making any progress in his current one. He is extremely passionate about cricket and Bangladesh. I bet if BCB was more responsive towards his ideas, projects, showed him importance he would have continued.

Like i mentioned in the FP writeup. He was fighting a lone battle, and this was inevitable. Whats the point in wasting precious days of your life if your employer is not willing to make use of your ability

2-3 years from now Taskin will still be 2-3 years away from ready for international cricket. 2-3 years after that he will be only 2-3 more years away from int'l cricket. Finally at age 35 he will be ready for int'l cricket, play 2 matches, bowling at a top speed of 72 mph. Then realize he's too old and retire from international cricket at age 35 and a half.

He will then overpass Mashrafe as the biggest pace bowling bust in BD cricket history.

There is truth in what he said about Taskin. T20 is fine, but he needs to do a lot more work before getting considered for ODI and tests.

This guy seems really special. For the first time since Mashrafee, we may have gotten a pace bowler of international standard. Would be tragic if he gets a serious injury like Mashrafe's progress was dented. And Mashrafe was quite well built, had a strong frame when he started. Taskin needs to bulk up a bit
