It's actually a magnitude 8.9 earthquake. Source [1] [2]

"Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin," the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.

A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on December 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, nearly three quarters of them in Aceh.

Big quake strikes off Indonesia, tsunami warning issued

JAKARTA | Wed Apr 11, 2012 10:22am BST

JAKARTA (Reuters) - An earthquake of 8.7 magnitude struck off the coast of Indonesia on Wednesday, sending residents there and in India dashing out of their homes and offices in fear. A tsunami warning was issued for the whole Indian Ocean.
The quake struck 308 miles (500 km) southwest of the city of Banda Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra island, at a depth of 20.5 miles (33 km), the U.S. Geological survey said.
The quake was felt as far away as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and in southern India, residents said. Hundreds of office workers in the Indian city of Bangalore left their buildings, workers there said.

The quake was in roughly in the same area as a December 26, 2004, quake of 9.1 magnitude, which sent huge tsunami waves crashing into Sumatra, where 170,000 people were killed, and across the Indian Ocean.
In all, the 2004 tsunami killed about 230,000 people in 13 Indian Ocean countries, including Thailand, Sri Lanka and India.
The 2004 quake was at a depth of 18 miles (30 km) along a fault line running under the Indian Ocean, off western Indonesia and up into the Bay of Bengal.
The quake was also felt in Sri Lanka and the southern Thai holiday island of Phuket, both of which were hit hard by the 2004 tsunami.
Thai Meteorological Department deputy chief Somchai Baimoung said there was no tsunami warning yet in Thailand. Provincial officials along the Andaman Sea coast were preparing for possible evacuation if necessary.

Tsunami generated by Indonesian quake not major: US agency

Published on Apr 11, 2012

SINGAPORE (REUTERS) - A tsunami measuring 17cm has been generated in the Indian Ocean and is headed for the Aceh province of Indonesia after a strong earthquake, a Pacific Tsunami Warning Center official said on Wednesday.

Earlier, an 8.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia, sending residents fleeing in fear.

Mr Victor Sardina, a geophysicist on duty at the Hawaii-based centre, said the total vertical measurement of the wave, according to monitoring gauges, was 35cm, making the height 17cm.

He did not provide a time estimate for landfall. 'It doesn't look like a major tsunami,' Mr Sardina said. 'But we are still monitoring as tsunamis come in waves.'

It was off the coast so damage on land was minor. The fear was a repeat tsunami like the one in 2004.

Yes, on the other hand, islands of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are at severe risk of the Tsunami.

Experts said a tsunami wave had been produced, but there were no reports of damage and it remained unclear how big the wave would be.

Tsunami alerts after powerful quakes hit off Indonesia

Updated at 8:54 a.m. ET: Tsunami alerts were issued around the Indian Ocean Wednesday after a powerful 8.6-magnitude earthquake and a series of aftershocks were recorded off Indonesia's coast.
Experts said a tsunami wave had been produced, but there were no reports of damage and it remained unclear how big the wave would be.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the initial quake happened about 14 miles beneath the ocean floor and 270 miles from Banda Aceh, the provincial capital of Aceh, at 2:38 p.m. local time (4:38 am. ET).The quake struck in a similar location to the 9.1-magnitude tremor on Dec. 26, 2004 that triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, killing almost 230,000 people, nearly three-quarters of them in Aceh province.

An 8.2-magnitude aftershock hit at 6:43 a.m. ET, the USGS said; the USGS and Indonesia issued fresh tsunami alerts as a result. There were several other smaller temblors, of between 5.1 and 5.7 magnitude in the same area between 5:51 a.m. ET and 8:10 a.m. ET.

For real-time alerts and updates, see BreakingNews.com
Kenya issued a tsunami warning for its Indian Ocean coastline, Reuters reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii, issued a tsunami watch - an alert category one level below a warning - for Indonesia, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and the island territory of Diego Garcia.

In the immediate aftermath of the first quake it issued a watch for countries as far away as Australia, Somalia and South Africa, although it later lifted that alert.

The PTWC said in a statement that “sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated.” “It may already have been destructive along some coasts,” the center said.

It posted a series of estimated arrival times for tsunami waves for potentially affected areas, saying that if no major waves had happened two hours after those times then “local authorities can assume the threat is passed.”
