For Pink Floyd you must really listen to the whole album. All their songs/music in one album make up one comprenhesive story. For my money here's how I would rank their first three;
1. dark side of the moon
2. Wisk you were here (this is particularly interesting if you are aware of their history with Syd Barret and all.)
3. The Wall.

For Who;
1. Who are you
2. Babba O'Rielly
3. Behind blue eyes.
Beatles;
1. Elenor Rigby
2. Let it be
3. Yesterday
Don't think you can classyfy Nirvana or Motorhead as "Classic Rock" bands.

I'm into modern rock and metal but I do like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, etc.. and of course classic punk like Sex Pistols, Ramones and The Misfits.. will dig up the some good songs for you later.

Get a Beatles album. Any of them are good, buy their best of's (62-66, 67-70 or 1)
Best songs?
Hey Jude
Something
Here Comes The Sun
Best albums?
Abbey Road
Sgt. Pepper
Revolver
My personal opinion of course...
Pink Floyd - Another brick in the wall
Nirvana - Buy "In Utero" or "Nevermind"
Stop downloading!

Yes come over to the good side..
Anyway, if you are interested classic punk you should also try out:
The Stooges ('I wanna be your dog' from self-titled), The Velvet Underground ('There She Goes Again', the Velvet Underground and Nico), Gang of Four ('Damaged Goods', Entertainment!), Buzzcocks ('What do I get?', Singles Going Steady) along with the usual Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, New York Dolls, The Jam scene.
Nirvana - As James said get both albums but if you want specific songs - 'In Bloom', 'Lithium', 'Lounge Act', 'On a Plain', 'Something in the Way', 'Rape Me', 'Pennyroyal Tea' also 'Dive', 'Aneurysm', 'You Know You're Right'
And if you're trying Nirvana you may as well try the Pixies (ALL of Doolittle)
Question to Who fans: 'My Generation' or 'Tommy' or 'Who's Next' or 'Who Are You' ? Also Who fans, do you have any Kinks suggestions?

who beatles et al
Who: fave has to be "behind blue eyes"
Beatles, gosh I play most of their stuff so which to pick? How about ...
1) Blackbird for it's elegant simplicity
2) Norwegian Wood & Something - best of the Harrison stuff
3) I'm so Tired - for perfectly capturing the John Lennon ennui during the later years
4) Twist & Shout (cover) - definitely Lennon's best vocal work and a crowd pleaser to boot
5) I'm Happy Just to Dance with You - another crowd pleaser with a great, happy rythm
6) Long & Winding Road - the best of the George Martin over-produced phase
7) You've Got to hide your love away - their nod to Bob Dylan
BTW surprised no one's mentioned Zepp here - we _are_ discussing classic rock here. "Over the hills and far away" anyone?

My genration rules. If I'm not mistaken "Who's next" is a compilatiom.
Obvious Kinks pick would be 'Lola'. Also the Christmas song-I forgot the title. It goes something like this;
'For the Chrismas give us some money.........'

Tommy was a rock opera, not sure if it ever came out as an album.

Bancan mate, its great to see u r interested in classic rock ..
there r so many great bands to start with...
METALLICA
Metallica is undoubtedly one of the greatest and best rock bands EVER. EVER. I will not bore u with thier introduction, as u can find them on the net. but i'll list few ( out of heaps loads) of thier best songs .. im just goin thru my mp3 collections ( i hv all of their albums)
First start with "Black" album of Metallica. that album is considered to be one of the greatest album of all time and u might be interested to listen to songs like Nothing Else Matters, Sad but True, Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, My Friend of Misery. Infact, all the songs from this album is great... even if u buy the whole album, u wont regret.
From Load Album, listen to Mama Said, The Cure, The House That Jack Built
From Reload listen to Fuel, Memory Remains,Attitude, The Unforgiven II, Slither
From And Justice For All (one of thier early albums) listen to And justice for All, ONE (must), Eye of the Behilder.
Other significant songs are: For Whom the Bell Rings, Master of Puppets, Of wolf and Man, I Dissapear ( Mi2 soundtrack)
Hope this would meet ur thirst for Metallica. Lemme know if u want to know more.

Bon Jovi's awesome!
They've got heaps of great songs, but I love these two:
- 'You Give Love A Bad Name'
- 'Living on a Prayer'
But 'Summer of 69' by Bryan Adams just kills it!
