Would you move back to Bangladesh?

Most of us are expats here and I can see some of us have relocated back to the country. While most of us migrated out to get out of the grim reality of our country and make proper bucks overseas, I am curious to know how many of us would actually turn back.

I knew this guy who came here with his brother. They both applied for political asylum by making bull-crap stories, which meant that they can stay here, but as soon as they go back its impossible for them to come back to Australia. Unless the guy fakes a new passport etc which is another 10 tonnes worth of hassle. The guy went back for some reason and now can't take it any more, but his way back to Sydney is sealed. Mind you they lived here for almost 8 years.

Fortunately most of us here migrate properly so the road back to overseas is always open. While there is pros and cons of going back, would you actually go back? For me its a big NO. I will be more than happy to visit as many times my wallet allows me, but wouldn't return unless there was a holocaust going on here.

Great poem. I love it. But it seems to me that Dash had "jonmatorbad" of Hinduism in his mind when he wrote the poem. That's why he dreamt his return not as human.

I would like to go and live in Bangladesh.
I was born overseas, spent basically my whole childhood out of Bangladesh, So I want to spend my adult life in BD.
I have moved from Zambia to South Africa and now to Australia, But i must say even with all these corrupted Govenments, Pollution, poverty I rather live in BD. people lead such a colourful life there. I mean I love Australia too but i think it's time that i think about living in my own country. I have been to many countries, experienced the culture, made very unique friends, been to so many different schools, learnt many languages ( which i can hardly remember now ) and i love all these things, the fact that i have friends all around the place, who speak different languages, have different religions and have different cultures. But i hardly know my own culture. I have never seen a Bangladeshi wedding before ( belive it or not), I've only experienced pohela boishak once in BD. That's about it. when i go to Bd I only stay for a month or so, which is not enough for me. So i plan to move back, learn more about Bd and it's culture, I would also work there. But i would like to come and live in Australia every now and then.

I would definitely want to spend my life in Bangladesh when I grow up, because everything is in bd is interesting,the eids,the beautiful sport of cricket and the smell of wet soil during the rainy season, you can never get bored there ,there is just something in Banglladesh that just keeps me attached to it but i just dont know what it is,its hard to explain everything.

Already did!

Given my situation, i did not have a choice.
But if i had, i probably wont.
It was the eternal battle between what a man wants to do and what he have to do.

Not that it means im hating my current situation, dont get me wrong.
Finally im doing what i was meant to do all along and im LOVING it.
The overall standard of living ( general in bd) and my social/personal life is taking a toll.

Dhaka is not Sydney.

But im sure once this initial phase is over, things would change.

my man from virginia speaks a sad, realistic truth! because even if it feels like a great life here, the feeling is never ever the same! NEVER, even with bangla people around, because in Bangladesh, that's where pure, real people live! not a bunch of materialists seeking cheap gain!


once i earn money, complete my educational quest, inshallah i will think about it... see what would be best for me and my family.

the environment i was raised at was very alive, and lively! i should be careful with my word choice. i mean i grew up in Bangladesh for about 11 years, and to tell you the truth i was never ever bored. NEVER, i didn't play video games nor did i watch too much tv(except with my brother sometimes and friends/cricket/drama at night/eid) but i was never ever bored? why? i was always with people, alive funny real people! in the USA i just never felt home even when i am with some people, except sometimes i feel alive!


that's what i meant by bunch of materialists... i do not have "fun" because of the environment or friends i am surrounded by or spending too much time playing video games alone or internet where in bangladesh it is a lot of fun to be a kid! trust me!(given the right environment)


and because i was a kid, everyone was nice to me, maybe because i like bangladesh better because i have grown up. otherwise, United States can be a great place to live too... you don't have to worry so much(opposite in bangladesh, a country of worry, but still i had fun because i was a kid).

plus, it is home, everyone thinks like you, can easily understand you, that is where i am the most frank, open. and i had some really great friends there

I have no plan or reason to move back to Bangladesh. Don't ask me why. But I plan to visit Bangladesh more often.

Other people may have both plan and reason to move back to Bangladesh.

Eash individual have their own comfort level, priorities, needs, responsibilities, ties, ethics, etc. that may contibute whether they want (on not) to move back to Bangladesh.

In a broader term whatever place you choose to live the rest of your life you can still contibute to the people in may different ways.

I think moving back is easier said than done. All those blissful moments with family, friends and food are soon over when you start to settle in your new life. Even though you live like a king if you got the money, you always crave for those nice clean roads, well kept apartments (if you lived in one), lack of chaos, people following traffic rules, decent public transport etc.

But lot of people who lived all their lives in BD doesn't like moving out especially if they are well established in Bangladesh. I knew this other guy in WA who was the director and co-owner and professor of some institute in BD and sold, his house and business to move here and now does security job to barely make a living while doing PHD. That guy would do anything to go back but won't because of his children whom he wants to grow here.

So it varies from person to person. If you lived a shitty life or semi shitty life in BD, then west is best, but if you are one of the ultra rich people, dont make the mistake of selling everything and moving overseas. It is a very very big gamble.

Good point, many NRBs on holiday in Bangladesh experience the "holiay syndrome", i.e. all relatives are nice to them as they see are seeing each other after maybe 4 years, people are extra hospitable, they eat Polao every other day, and give and receive gifts. Then once they return to Canada/USA they think "Bangladesh is so good, you have relatives there etc etc".

But if somene returns, they wont necessarily find extra hospitable relatives throughout the year, they will become another "local resident", and very likely they may be unable to see some relatives for a month or 2 because their schedules dont match.

However, this doesnt apply for those with direct relatives in Bangladesh i.e. parents and siblings.

This is a good topic, i opened an immigration thread, and this was one topic that could have been touched upon, im glad someone gave it, its own thread, thanks Alien bro!

For me, returning to Kolkata, would be out of the question, we try to visit every year, and i thoroughly enjoy it, but im so used to my life in UK, i can't imagine myself outside the UK. I sometimes think to myself, as a 1st Generation Immigrant, why did my father come to this country? Didn't he realise what dilemnas for me and my siblings there would be. I also wonder (very rarely) what would it be like, if i had stayed there, after birth. Im told, it would have been very different.

I have throughout my stay, been surronded by people similar to my parents, we are like a family, i have always felt at ease and at home when, with other 1st generation families like mine, who i know. Though, at school i have had no problems, im talking about from a family point of view. The other Asian communities, Gujuratis, who have arrived in the 70s from East Africa, Punjabis and Pakistanis, correct me if im wrong, have been arriving in a wider time period are different. Bangladeshis in UK, im not too sure about, once again. I guess depending on how long ur family have adjusted, and what age you are decides what option. For me, i dont see a future where i will live in Kolkata sadly. Though many of my parents friends are planning to, which is sad to see from my point of view, but in the end, they are doing what they feel is right for themselves, so i wish them and all who plan to on this board, best of luck!

i would definitely love to spent my adult life in bangladesh.. i've lived here in uae for practically my whole life and i love it.. but there's nothing like living in bangladesh.. no matter how much i like living here.. i want to go back to bd.. there's nothing natural about uae other than the few desert areas that are left.. and deserts are really not very nice to look at.. its just buildings buildings buildings.. you look out of the window.. you just see more buildings.. you look down you see cars looking like toys and people looking like ants.. this is really not the life i want.. i would love to live in bd.. its just so much greener.. and more beautiful.. the natural greenery in bd is enough to make me want to live there.. i want to know how it feels to live in the village.. it want to experience village life.. if i ever go back to bd permanently.. i would like to stay in the village for a while.. i wanna know how walking on wet mud after it rains feels.. i wanna feel the pleasure of picking up mangoes after a storm in summer.. or after its ripe.. i've read about these things in books.. i want to experience them.. i want to see how a farmer works in the field.. i want to see how sleeping in a tiner ghor when its raining outside feels.. i want to celebrate festivals like eid and boishakhi etc bangladeshi style.. i want to experience all these feelings.. something which this lifestyle in uae will never let me experience.. i'm tired of this commercial life here.. i want a break.. i'd like to go back forever and come back in a few years for a vacation.. all my friends are from other nations.. when my mom or dad talks about their childhood friends.. and when they meet the back home.. i feel jealous.. i have a few very unique and special friends.. who cannot be replaced.. but i know they won't be with me later on.. i don't know where they'll be.. i don't know where i will be.. all this makes me sad.. i want to have friends from my country.. friends who'll be there forever..

it doesn't matter how corrupted or crowded my country is.. i'd always like to live there.. forever.. with its people.. and its cultures..
