Player Ranking System
Every time I am trying to think of who should be the ones going to South Africa, the lack of a player ranking system comes into my mind.
Every professional or existing ranking system that exists on different cricket sites, they are all based upon world cricket.
Why don't we do our own player ranking system? It would be fun.
Besides, it is going to be a long time that even five of our players get into the world ranking system of any kind - given the time until now - only Habibul Bashar Sumon has made a serious improvement from his position to get into any ranking system or any current existing ranking system.
What do you say?

YES
I will get working on this or if Waliullah has something in mind, we can work with that and it shouldn't be hard to start. I have enjoyed the 'debut' post by orpheus and we can use such great inputs to have a ranking system going on.
What should be the considerations ? I think we should have different ranking for TEST, ODI, A Team, League, First Class and naturally, TEST and ODI will get the priority.
Cricinfo has a great database and we all can tap into that for resources.

Need to do some research. I will also try.

Before all of you go ballistic on this matter, first set which factors will play vital roles in detemining the ranks. If it's solely on average or best runs/economy or wickets ....... Here is a little program which will save a lot of time...

Remember to choose Bangladesh from the dropdown menu of countries.

Why don't we also categorize like this - we can do this after an initial ranking system is finished, tested and recognized (including test, ODI, first class):
1) Specialist batsman
a) Specialist Middle Order Batsman
b) Specialist Opening batsman
c) Make-shift Middle order batsman (I am not sure about this - according to my knowledge no opener has gone down to bat at middle order or no lower order batsman has gone up to bat at the middle order)
d) Make-shift opening batsman
2) Specialist pace bowlers:
a) Fast bowler (is there any?)
b) Medium Fast bowler
c) Fast medium bowler
d) Swing bowler
e) Medium
f) Slow Medium
g) Gentle medium
3) Specialist spin bowler
a) Leg spin
b) Left arm spin
c) Right arm off spin

On any ranking system, form is more importent than average. That means, someone who has an average of 20 but scored 200 in last 4 innings, should be over someone with an average of 30 but scored 50 in last 4 innings.
By the way, its simply an example.
Another thing, The only way to have a ranking system, is trough very upto date stats. That means, Tehsin bhai will need a database, and it has to be updated after every match, it has to be set up such way, that it will update each player table once the whole match stats are entered in the system.
Once we figure out the ranking calculation formula, I can create data input web applications that will populate the tables once the whole match stats are entered. And I can definitly write the report which will show the ranking on a webpage, from the up to date table. So we have 2 unsolved question.
1. What should be the formula?
2. Who will keep the table up to date by entering each match stat regularly, day after day.
Any comments Tehsin bhai?

Raj Bhai
My day offs tomorrow, until then I am running around like a chicken to figure out ways to pay in-state tuition and take care of some ....... issues.
Let's meet tomorrow on Paltalk or msn. You're the expert on the programming so we just need to figure out thr FORMULA and may be improvise a little bit.
By the way, I like the wisden style. very simple and very very professional. Any problem with this site copying some of their features/templates ? The player profile pages look great even though they are not well connected/linked. We can top that.

It all looks
All your ideas of new programs - seem a lot of work and also time, not to mention they are also impressive.
How about a primary - basic thing like voting?
We will all get a chance to vote as to who is the number 1 batsman, who is number 2.
After all, with this, all we need is a simple form in web designing. Also, Tehsin does this quite often in the home page which has only 4 answers to a particular question (I am referring to the voting poll).

Poll wont be rating. It will be popularity.
