Bangladesh to rank 3rd to 5th in the world - Shakib
Shakib Al Hasan has high hopes of Bangladesh © Associated Press
Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh's captain, has backed the team to soar into the top five of international cricket's best. Bangladesh currently occupy the No. 9 spot in the ICC's rankings for Tests and one-day internationals but after their recent success Shakib predicted them to shake up the world order.
"One day, no one will consider Bangladesh the underdogs," Shakib told AFP. "There will be no automatic predictions that we will end up losing. In the next five years I want to see Bangladesh ranked third to fifth in the world."
Bangladesh, who won Test status in 2000, have won just three of their 61 Tests so far, losing 52 and drawing six. They have had more success in one-day cricket: they have won 55 of their 211 games, including a place in the second round of the 2007 World Cup.
Shakib, 22, was appointed Bangladesh captain after Mashrafe Mortaza picked up an injury in the Caribbean this summer and lead the side to their first Test series win over West Indies and a 3-0 sweep in the one-dayers. Apart from performing well as a captain, Shakib was Bangladesh's most successful allrounder on that tour. He was the leading wicket-taker in the Tests, with 13 at 18.76 and scored 159 runs, and scored a century in the ODIs.
Shakib then oversaw a 4-1 ODI series win over Zimbabwe at home - Bangladesh's second such success after a 4-1 success in Zimbabwe in August - and contributed with bat and ball. "The key to being a good captain is to be decisive and also focus on your own game," he said. "It's difficult for a captain to be confident if he's not performing."
Shakib also credited the Bangladesh's recent success to the coach Jamie Siddons, who has been working with the team for two years. "The most important characteristic in him is his positive attitude towards everything," he said. "Jamie is very good at extracting the best in a player. In my case, my batting has improved so much because of him."
Bangladesh's next scheduled series is a tour of New Zealand in February 2010.

OK. Don't know what to say - over confidence? We really need to start playing big teams and not just Zimbabuwe to gain confidence and say big things like this.

My lecturer once said me this
" If you aim for an A+ you will end up with and A, and if you aim for a B, you will get C. And if you aim to just pass, you will fail"
Till now we only aimed for pass, but seems like this bloke is aiming for A+

The tri series is not part of the FTP, and is not till another 2 months. Thats probably why CI is in dark about it

I like this kid. He says "I want to see ..." which is more setting a goal than making a prediction.
Between the Tri series, NZ, ENG home and away and the T20 WC we have a chance to show our arrival in all formats of the game.
Here's raising a glass to 2010 : the year of Bangladesh (now that is overconfidence )

Well. Didn't find anythin about it from BCCI. But I do remember they talked about it and confirmed it long time ago. I think I read it in some Bangla dailies.
Here's something from an Indian daily about their schedule.

It's wonderful to see a Bangladesh captain aiming higher than 'We want to give the other teams a good fight.'

bhaijan Ian bhai didn't mean the tour date, he meant the date the article was written. you see its BCCI plans change every day, another words we might have to wait till the toss to make sure the game is taking place.

Ya I say after this series with them (if it is even played) just stop playing with india. Boycott them until they invite us over. There are lots of fish in the sea. Why chase the one that doesn't want to play you?
BTW I did not mean that announce it to the world that we have a problem with india. I mean just do what they are doing. Avoid.

I like this Shakib kid. If he were American, he would have ended up a top CEO.

If Shakib says Bangladesh will launch rocket to space by 2020, then Bangladesh will launch rocket to space by 2020.
If Shakib says there will be GPS on rickshaws, then there will be GPS on rickshaws.
If Shakib says Bangladesh will earn enough money to buy IMF, then Bangladesh will earn enough money to buy IMF.

This is the confidence neede.I am really hopeful about this guy and his words.I am confident too.Definately Sidons has done a lot in our batting and after arrival of 2 or 3 ICL our batting will be more stronger. I think we will go to on 7 position after WC 2011.
