Default Mashrafe Mortaza to lead Bangladesh in tri-series !

Mashrafe Mortaza has been named as Bangladesh captain for next month's home tri-series featuring Sri Lanka and India. The BCB's board of directors, who convened in Mirpur today, said the fast bowler would also lead the side during the home Test series against India which follows.

Mortaza, who picked up an injury in the West Indies soon after taking over as captain from Mohammad Ashraful, missed the home ODIs against Zimbabwe in October-November after failing to recover in time from a knee surgery. Shakib Al Hasan, who led the team in his absence, has been named as vice-captain.

"A selection from the 26-member squad of the preliminary national team camp will play a practice one-day match against Mohammedan Sporting Club at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, December 26, 2009," a release from the BCB said.

The contracts of 13 national team players have also been renewed till November 30 next year. These include Mortaza, Shakib, Ashraful, Abdur Razzak, Shahadat Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Syed Rasel, Junaid Siddique, Mehrab Hossain jnr, Raqibul Hasan, Mahmudullah and Enamul Haque jnr. The fresh contract will be effective from December 1, 2009.

i think, his captaincy of last match (abahoni vs mohamedan) has cost his nomination of being sole captain for the series over Mash !

so Shakib for 2011? kind of plan to restore him for the mission of world cup after 2010...meanwhile letting Mash to enjoy the captaincy what he deserved just after Ash's dynasty!!!

I really oppose any such move; for the interest of Mash & BD cricket. We don't need to make him captain at the moment. He will not make miracles as a captain, just might ruin his career. Shakib was ok. If it is declared, it's complete nonsense for me.

I don't think it was Shakib's poor captaincy in the final which cost him the national team captaincy, in fact the BCB have always been firm that Mashrafe is the captain of the national team and Shakib is just the temporary captain till Mash gets fit and the BCB are just sticking with it, which I like. Shakib has plenty of time to captain but for now Mash is the rightful and deserving captain of Bangladesh.

I also support the decision to play KKR as this will provide a new and exciting experience for cricket spectators in Bangladesh.

This is nothing new. Mash was the captain and he still is. but if he is unfit sakib will be the stand in captain... nothing to do with mogadan match

at the end of the day mash will be injured in a couple of matches and Shakib will be back to captaincy - this is ideal

I don't know about this. Sounds like too much of a risk, especially given that another injury could virtually put an end to his career.

It makes no sense! You must ask a question like "what you hve done for us lately?". There are no gurrantees that he will be fit and remain fit. I am betting my money on him limping out of the field into the oblivion. Staying fit requies commitment. This requires taking appropriate precautions, excercising to strengthen mussles and tendons, eating right, resting when needed. That is how you achieve longivity. He has shown none of these.

I'm surprised by the decision too. When I met up with Mashrafe I asked him whether he was going to be able to play this series, and he said the odds were highly unlikely. I'm not sure this series is worth the risk.

Shakib wil be the stand-in captain in the tri-series. It is highly unlikely that Mortaza will be fit for the tri-series. He will be probably back for the Test series.

It's difficult to understand the mindset of the BCB officials especially after the Salahuddin saga. Personal issues sometimes takes priorities over national interest. Things would have been probably different if Shakib played a Shakibesque match in the DPL final and won the trophy for Abahani.

Well we havent yet seen how good mashrafi is as captain, so lets see.

The good thing about Sakib is his hard working strong attitude. A captain doesnt need to always make the correct decision, its his personality thats more important.

I think BCB don't have much choice other than to keep Mash as captain if he is fit and selected since Mash never got the opportunity to validate their initial selection. Hence, he never did anything to cost him the job either.

It is really up to Mash to step down for Shakib for continuity. This way Mash comes out classy and will be captain should Shakib fail to deliver. Otherwise, a poor showing by BD under his captaincy will only reflect bad on him and he may lose that opportunity forever.

I really like the body language of the team under Shakib. Tamim, Naeem, Riad and Mushy seem to enjoy his leadership and have shown an agressive nature rarely seen in BD cricket before.

If Masri is fit and plays like he does, he will do better than Sakib. He has always been a great leader and very aggressive to win.

Give this tiger a chance, he will win the skeptical ones.

But is Mashrafe fit? Knee injuries are no joke, especially with what Mash has been through. I hope the management isn't forcing Mash to "man up" and play before his knee is fully healed.

I think the squad is ready. The BCB will just observe what happens in the practice match and check on the fitness of Mash, Tamim and others and then announce it which I don't mind.

And we know pretty much what the U19 squad is going to be anyway.

i agree...he should only play if fully fit.

there will probably be very little difference between a sakib and mashrafee captaincy against G8 sides anyways.
