their batting lineup had two very attacking batsmen to start with. Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana. Gurusinha at onedown was mainly a grafter but also a good clean hitter when needed specially against spinner. De silva was there classy batsman who used to play a build up role in the middle of the innings and if needed counter attacked the bowlers and ready to change gears at any times. Arjuna mainly dependent on pushes and nudges for singles and some tricky and chicky fours here and there. Mahanama and Tilkerante at 6 and 7 were mainly long version specialsts. they were there to apply finish or hold the innings if there was collapse because of so many attacking players upfront. then Vaas and Dharmasena were handy batsmen, could hold a end or hit for acceleration. Murali and wickramesinghe were genuine 10 and 11 that time
their bowling had one left and one right hand medium pacer in vaas and wickremesinghe. followed by two right hand specialist off spiners murali and dharmasena. jayasuriya was their fifth boler left arm off spinner. also aravinda was handy with his right arm off breaks. so two pacers, three RH off break and one LH off break bowler.
now lets adopt a strategy similar to these srilankan team and this could be BD 11 that can do the same job
Sanath Jayasuria - TAMIM IQBAL
Ramesh Kaluwitharana - MITHUN ALI/Anamul
Asanka Gurusinha - IMRUL KAYES/RAQIBUL HASAN
Aravinda de Silva - MUSHFIQUR RAHIM
Arjuna Ranatunga - SHAKIB AL HASAN
Roshan Mahanama -MAHMUDULLAH RIYADH
Hashan Tilkeratne -NAEEM ISLAM
Chaminda Vaas- MASHRAFE MORTAZA
Kumara Dharmasena - SUHRAWARDI SHUVO
Muttiah Muralidharan - ABDUR RAZZAK
Promdya Wickremesinghe - RUBEL HOSSAIN/NAZMUL HOSSAIN/SHAFIUL ISLAM
batting wise we have a attacking pair of tamim and mithun/anamul. then imrul can come at one down and do the role he is doing at opening now. an alternate can be raqibul hasan. mushfiqur as our man at no 4. can play classy shots rotate the strike and change gears. Shakib at 5 should do the chicky tricky push/nudge job and can go for shots if needed. riadh and naeem at 6 and 7 can do a better job than hashan and roshan also considering we have this bowling powerplay theses days. at 8 and 9 in mashrafe and shuvo we still have some decent batting with no 10 and 11 to follow.
bowling wise we are better equipped than srilanka. two pacers from mashrafe and rubel/shafiul/nazmul. srillanka had three RH off break bowlers, we have three LH off break bowlers. adding to them we have two RH off break bowlers too.
well SRILANKA in 96, why not BD in 2011. lets give a go
interesting endeavor, but far fetched, come'on to compare kaluwithrana with mithun, someone who hasn't debut-ed yet, don'tchya think is a little wishful thinking?
edit: btw...i'd compare roqib with aravinda just because intuitive they look both solid.

the total thread is kinda wondering, wishing, hoping and dreaming
A nice thread, but dont' count out Ashraful so early. He still has time

We need our own formula. SLAs, off-spinners and spinning track. Who needs pacers?
de silva was da boss ! 96 semi was a heartbreak for me but what an innings he played ! he came in at sri lanka reeling at 1/2, kalu gone, jayasuriya gone. gurusinghe went soon after.
de silva didn't care, he scored 64 off 46 before being done in by a kumble flipper. that's a strike rate of 140 for todays T20 punks, no sixes and most shots through the gaps along the ground. a delight to watch even though he was on the other team.
there have been few like him.

Absolutely De Silva was in a league of his own. Easily one of the best batsmen in the world and his batting was so pleasing to watch too ... How on earth can he be compared to anyone like Rokib or Mushfiq (no disrespect) is beyond me! Posted via BC Mobile Edition
I'm sorry but this is a completely miss match. If u you were write this for 2015 world cup I would have said ok we still have a lot of time, maybe by then a lot of our players will turn the corner. but for 2011? not even a year away, that's just wrong. Arjuna, Vaas, Muthaih, Jaya, Arvinda were way better than tamim, rahim, mushy, mash ,razzak even back then. and same goes for the rest of the players.

It was 1996 world cup finals in lahore. Two wickets down and only 23 on the board. SL was playing against mighty Australia. Shane Warne at his best form. SL needs 242 to win the match. Sri Lanka's finest test batsmen ever walks down the ground. What happened next? See it yourself.
Hard to believe at this moment.... See the Srilankan uprise two years before the world cup. They have started beating the top teams during that time leading to WC. We are still struggling to compete. Such improvement doesnt happen overnight. There must be signs of improvement prior to WC to believe so. Lets see if 2015/2019 can be ours ...
WC 1996, aah that was really an exciting and entertaining moment when players like Jaysurya have showed really good cricket. The match you've done in the above post somewhere mismatches as you've compared Arjuna Ranatunga by SHAKIB AL HASAN. Totally mess.
In my opinion, that’s a good representation and comparison of the past with the future. Sri Lankan did quite well in the past and current Bangladeshi performance is to some extent the copy of ‘90s and onwards’ Sri Lanka. I think if they get some good guidelines, they can win the WC quite easily because all their players are quite talented from clubs sports and sport news perspectives.
Bangladesh can only be compared to the Kenyan side of 1996, please don't insult Srilanka. Bangladeshi players are only eligible to clean the cups and carry drinks for other players, they are fortunate enough to be sharing the screen with big players.
