Default Tonoy's list of Mediocre Pacers

The name says it all. Any pacer listed here is worst of bunch. They possess no quality to survive in the international arena. Some listed here do not even possess quality to survive in the domestic arena. These are all tried and tested failures who should not be in the national squad anytime soon.

The list is broken down in to three categories.

Dreadful- Might possess some trait to get occasional wicket but is far too inconsistant to survive in an international arena. A year or two of strong domestics performance before recalling in the national team.

Atrocious- Proven failures in the test arena. Go back to the domestic arena son and don't think about coming back in the next five years or so.

Just Plain Aweful- Seriously what were you thinking son? There are many things you can succeed on, but bowling isn't one of them. Do yourself and ourself a favor and just stop bowling.

seriously, why we dont have any Fast Bowlers? At least someone like Zahir khan or ishant sharma...they are far better bowler then any bowlers in bangladesh.. With this kind of line up we might win against Zimbo inhome turf... forget against other team or overseas tour...

Since there are far too many failures out there. I decided to do an analysis of the recent pacers.

Shafiul Islam- Started off with a pacer which seems to show many promises. Initially possessed the ability to swing the ball in ODI. However, in the test arena seemed to show none of the trait required for a fast bowler. No control of bowling line and length. Not great pace either. No ability with the old ball.
New ball ability-- Bare minimum
Old ball ability-- none
Line & Length-- None
Mental Strength-- very weak

Veredict: Shafiul rightfully is ranked in the Atrocious category for test list. While he places a little better on the dreadful rank on the ODI list. He needs to be dropped as soon as possible.

Who will replace him?

I have an option. I am running 33 now, a bit on the fat side. But I used to play for my local club as a pace bowler and also used to play for my department team in university. May I replace him?

Rubel Hossain Was found out through the Grameen pacer hunt program. But this is one talent we were better off not finding. A test average of 70 and an ODI average of 39, he might as well think about a different career. There are times where he looks like he could swing the old ball in to the right handers, but he hardly possesses any descipline to control the line and length to take advantage of it. He also started off with a bowler with good pace, but seems to have lost his extra pace.
New Ball Ability--None
Old Ball Ability--Minimal
Line & Length-- None
Mental Strength--very weak

Agree with the relativity of the rating.

Wasn't Shafiul one of the best bowlers of 2011?

We have short memories. Including the bowlers.

Now poor Nazmul does not even make it to this list.

Now that's not fair. I truly did try to add Nazmul to the list. He did only play one test match and he is fairly decent for the ODIs. A pretty decent average with less than 6 economy rate which is gold for Bangladeshi Standard. I guess he could be in contention for dreadful in the ODI list.

Tonoy: I wonder how you'd categorize these winners:

1. Alomgir Kobir

2. Monzurul Islam Monju

3. Mohammod Shorip

4. Aptap "5-wicket Haul" Ahmod Sodree

this doesnt make sense at all. Some of the players that u mentioned like Dolar, Robiul, Mahbubul, Farhad didnt even get nearly enough chances to reach a conclusion.
just on 2 tests u concluded that Robiul should seek a new career. Yea that definitely make sense
u are also saying players like Shahadat, Rubel, Mahbubul shouldnt return to international squad in next 5 years.

If ur evaluation was correct, we would have to forfeit our cricket completely for next 5 years.....

for me rating goes like this,
Test:
Shafiul: has the talent, need some work with his pace.
Rubel: has everything but needs more control and needs to produce more pace which he is capable of
Robiul: definitely a talent who needs to fix whis run up in order to generate more pace and control
Mashrafe: He needs fitness. He has it all
Shahadat: needs to work on more pace

Conclusion: Our bowlers need more pace! Majority are capable of producing swingers, pitching the ball right and decent length for at least 50% of time. But with high 120s pace, its not as effective

ODI
Mashrafe: More fitness will lead to more games and more improved consistency other wise he is fine
Nazmul: In order to even realize his weakness and potential he has to be tested. He has a talent for slow deliveries which could be deadly in ODI and T20
Shafiul: Needs to work on his nerve issues.
Rubel: Doesnt work as an ODI bowler unless he can improve on his line and length significantly
Rasel: He has great control with the ball just needs to work on some variations.
Shahadat: ODI doesnt work for him. He would be better off with test cricket

Others: they have not played enough to be judged at.
Hopefuls for future: Alauddin Babu, Rabbi, Dolar, Shohag Gazi, Reza

I guess we all have our ways to judge a pacer

to me the evaluation criterias are as follows in order of importance:

1. Swinging ability with the New ball
2. Consistency in line and length
3. Variation
4. Speed
5. Reverse swing capability
6. Intelligence

Great bowlers like Wasim Akram or Glen Mcgrath were able to master all the aspects of the above. While consistency in line was Mcgrath's greatest weapon... Swing and variation was the hallmark of Wasim.

When we judge our pacers along these criterias we see a problem in all the above areas. In the last test match we didn't see too much swing from our pacers while Vitori was making the ball talk almost. We didn't see consistency in line and length (one good ball was followed by a ball down the leg side or a half volley). We didn't see a lot of effective variation (yorkers, slower, bouncers). We did see a hint of reverse from Rubel so perhaps thats a skill our attack can master. We didn't see intelligence at work in terms of having a specific plan for specific batsman. There were no double bluffs or traps set.

So overall I have to agree with Tonoy's assessment except for Robiul who might need a few more games before we can pass a verdict

The word pacer in the title of a thread in Bangladesh Cricket does make for a not-so-dreadful oxymoron.
