Default Cheaper laptops await PM's nod

http://bdnews24.com/details.php?cid=4&id=205563&hb=5

Shamim Ahamed
bdnews24.com correspondent

Dhaka, Sept 9 (bdnews24.com) — 'Doel', the cheap laptop manufactured by the Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS), waits for prime minister Sheikh Hasina's green light to hit the market at the price of Tk 10,000-25,000.

"We've sent an application for the prime minister's permission. The laptop will be in market soon after she grants permission," telecommunications minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju told bdnews24.com.

The minister, however, could not give any specific date in this regard on Thursday.

"The prime minister is going abroad. The laptop will be inaugurated before or after her tour," he said.

"The marketing of the laptop has been underway for two and a half years. Now it is waiting for inauguration only," he added.

According to Raju, four brands of Doel laptops will be sold at Tk 10,000, Tk 12,000, Tk 21,000 and Tk 25,000.

He also expressed his hope that the foreign laptop manufacturers would have to reduce the prices on their products once Doel hit the market.

After seeing the trial run of the laptop factory at TSS in Gazipur on July 8, the minister had said, "Now it's a Tk 1.48 billion project. At least 10,000 laptops will be produced here per month. The project can be expanded if TSS gets a larger space for its factory."

TSS managing director Mohammad Ismail had said the project was being implemented in collaboration with the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Malaysian Thin Film Transistor (TFT) and foreign experts.

He had added that 60 percent of the laptop parts, including the motherboard, would be manufactured in the factory.

Good initiative. Let's see how it goes on in the market.

Why the brand name is "DOEL", and why does the logo bear such uncanny resemblance with DELL logo?

We probably have dozens of various national things, why chose "DOEL" in particular? For the sake of argument let's accept that DOEL is the most relevant thing to associate with a laptop brand. But how can you defend the logo design? When I looked at the photo I was wondering why does DELL logo look like this (I didn't know these laptops were supposed to be branded DOEL before I read this article).

Yeah, we do have many national icons but most of them are used prominently elsewhere: the shapla on our coins and certain govt. insignia, the map & flag on the official govt. logo, the tiger for our cricket team, etc. Out of the rest, if I had to choose between the jackfruit, hilsha and doel, I would go for the doel too. But yes, the design of the logo could have been nicer...they could have used the picture of the doel itself, like how Kingfisher Ltd. uses the picture of the Kingfisher.

I think KAUA would have been a better name. We have no shortage of that bird in our country and the logo would be bada**. Not to mention it would be a way to pay tribute to them for their contribution in keeping our environment clean!
