Default Bargains from Bangladesh

Hi,

I will be coming to dhaka in Jan. I was wondering other than DVD s are there any good bargains to get from Bangladesh.

PS Does anyone know where I can buy the drama series Teen tekka or get it from torrents?

Thanks in advance.

Don't buy any english movie dvd from BD; most are bootlegged from cam/ts source. Not even screeners. They are even selling DVD in a bluray box as bluray! I would have kept the ones that I bought, if they took the time to bootleg from an original source. TS source looks fine on their tiny 14" screen in the store; but when you play on your large screen at home; its crap. I was in a hurry, and didn't realize the quality while evaluating it in the store.

Made mistake of buying some dvds; utter crap. Garbaged it right away.

Do buy DVD/CDs of BD drama. They are all genuine and good quality.

You can buy jeans and formal/casual shirts. Quality and price is quite good compare to some foreign expensive brands.

same opinion too.

All these electronics in Bangladesh are 3rd grade chinese products and the price is relatively high too. So, does not make sense buying electronics items in Bangladesh. BD People usually buy electronics items when they visit other countries

But One positive side of Bangladesh is, you can Unlock mobile phones even iphones very cheaply. I usually buy locked prepaid phones in Aus cheaply and then unlock it in Bangladesh. If I want to buy unlocked phones in Aus then those will be very expensive.

We've experienced contrasting stuff, the DVDs I've bought the last time I went to BD (2-3 yrs ago) never suffered such quality, it was quite good in fact, but then again they were about 3-8months old from the release date.

I no longer find that to be true. The quality of the fabric and stiching of the clothes that make it to the local market is poor. Even the ones being sold in the local-branded store. The good stuff ends up being exported.

Books, yes. Again, for shoes, undies and socks, the quality does not cut it. Your dress shoes would be uncomfortable and the soles will come off in a few months. Now you can get a bargain with Bata quality informal footwear. Wiith socks and undies, you'll see the elastic fray after a few washes. As for software, as a sw professional, I now refrain from buying bootleg or cracked copies as a matter of principal.

Thanks so much for your advice and the comic relief provided by idumb.

-I went to artisti collection and found the shirts to be quite
expensive and poor craftsmanship. so local branded shirts is a big no.

-I will stay off electronics then!

- can't buy shoes as I never get my size of 12 uk unless someone can advise me of shops that cater to big feet

- not too keen on food items as you can get most stuff in the uk

Don't buy any DVDs, buy an HDD and ask your uni going cousins to fill that up with good quality English Movies. Saves both money and space.

I did get some DVD Box sets of TV shows and some movies. I had my college going nephew 'test' them out. He was happy to stay up late nights watching the shows and movies and we did find a few that were screencams or screener issues with the watermark, we returned and got our money back or got more movies. We go to the same dude at the Rifles Square Mall and he is happy to do take back those we didn't care for (some were due to the quality of the movie and not the quality of the recording). I've given him enough of my business. The last two trips in 2010/2011, I must have bought over 200 DVDs. Yeah, my nephew wasn't up to testing all of those and I ended up with a copy of 'How to Train Your Dragon' dubbed in what sounds like Uzbeki, I swear. The print quality was pristine. So,if you know an Uzbek, let him/her know where he can get some Uzbek dubbed movies mighty cheap.

Excellent books from Nilkhet at ridiculously cheap prices.

Jeans/casuals (yes, there are good quality stuff, you just need to look at the right places!)

BOOKS:
I would say along with Nilkhet, you should definitely visit Zeenat Book Supply in New Market and the bookstore on the ground floor of Aziz Supermarket. In my opinion, these bookstores are far better than the overpriced Words n Pages, etc. They have great variety, competitive prices and stock used books/comics as well.

You'll find plenty of old Asterix/Tin Tin comics and MAD magazines at Zeenat and the old ones, usually in good condition, are ridiculously cheap. (As in 30-50 taka for an old edition of MAD) Asterix is generally more expensive but cheaper than in UK bookstores (~ Tk.200-300) But just like most things in Bangladesh, the price is always negotiable.

What's also really good about these bookstores is their range of books on the Indian subcontinent, some of which are extremely rare/out of print/unavailable in the West. They're definitely an investment. If you're in Dhaka for a while, these bookstores also accept orders.

FILMS:
Rifles Square is undoubtedly the best for range and price. You'll probably find the Natok you're for here. If you build up a good rapport with the vendor (and keep a receipt), you should be able to return any DVD that isn't of satisfactory quality. If the movie is more than 9 months old, you'll probably get a good quality DVD anyway. If you're into foreign films or box sets of old English/American tv shows, there are some real gems to be found.

FOOD:
Bakorkhani, Biryani, even Bangladeshi Chinese food, you'll not get that in the UK.

DON'T get shoes from Bangladesh. I bought three pairs in January, a formal one, a pair of sneakers and basketball shoes. The sole of the first two broke a couple of days after I started wearing them and the basketball shoes are already starting to tear at the seams.

I haven't been to BD in 11 years. I am going there in Feb. I am finding this thread super helpful.
