Sunil Gangopadhyay dies
Dhaka, Oct 23 (bdnews24.com)—Sunil Gangopadhyay, the famous Bengali poet and writer, passed away at his Kolkata home in the early hours of Tuesday. He was 78.
Indian media reported that Sunil breathed his last at his residence in Kolkata around 2am and that he was suffering from various ailments for quite a while.
His family friend Dipendu Bhattacharya said he was not keeping well of late. "He was supposed to go to the doctor. But he said he would go later. We had a long conversation at night… he (Sunil) went to the bathroom and after several minutes he had a heart attack."
The news of his death came as a big shock for the literature and cultural spheres in both West Bengal and Bangladesh. Many rushed to his Kolkata home to see this celebrated writer for one last time.
Sunil's mortal remains were taken to the Peace Haven mortuary in the morning. Indian TV station ETV Bangla reported that Sunil's funeral would take place in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Well-known author Amitav Ghosh wrote on the micro-blogging site Twitter: "Deeply shocked by the death of the great Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhyay. He was warm, kind man and a dear friend. Will miss him terribly."

A truly great loss. I had the opportunity to meet him in Berlin some time ago and it's hard to believe that a man of such vitality could pass so abruptly. His personality had all the vigor of his writing - unfortunately, the cigarettes that he so often wrote about finally contributed to his demise
RIP

Unfortunately never read any of his works. I will give it a try soon. I heard he has roots in East Bengal as well.

Sad news. Its a great loss for Bangla literature. Was my favourite writer back in college life readng. In fact I guess I read more Sunil than Azad/Humaun/Shirsendu all together. Will be greatly missed.

I learnt today that Taslima Nasreen accused him of sexual assault. Really? What happened?

When HA died, I was thinking, the best alive Bengali writer is now probably Sunil. So, within a span of a few months, we lost two of the best we had.
Great loses. RIP Sunil.

"Keu Kotha rakheni" etota e hit chilo je ekhono majhe majhe abriti korefeli if in reciting mood. Purbo Poshchim was his last book that I read... Bangla Shahitto was already on the decline... Now it's going for a nose dive I'm sure.
Very few writers of such quality will come in Bangla literature, while Opar Bangla talents are going towards Hindi and Epar Bangla talents gets destroyed being political buddhijibi with small little work.....
