Capital Punishment: For or Against
What's such a bad thing about capital punishment? Seriously. From my youthful naive logic: isn't it humane than letting a murderer or rapist rot in prison for lifetime?
That's why I am against it.
But populace logic seems to be that no one has the right to take other's life. I don't buy it whether derived from Islamic shariah or just pure morale. How else is justice served?
Hope to have a good debate/discussion here. Been a minute since we had sth. serious going that didn't whittle to Naimul's prem kahini or NW's chak.
Okay scratch that.

I am ambivalent and have been waffling since I was sentient. I have even waffled on BC about how I feel about capital punishment. My issue with it is in the finality of it - what if the person was innocent? There is no do over any more.
Yup, I am being gored by by the horns of my own moral quandary.

What is the alternative for capital punishment in Bangladesh? for the well connected, no such sentence sticks. Does anyone think that Giasuddin al Mamun will serve even his full 7 year sentence for financial embezzlement, if the BNP comes to power? For the poor, inadequate or non-existent legal representation means they'll continue to get inordinately harsh or inappropriate sentences. These punishments may not be as final as death but they still take the best years of one's life, which is also horrible to contemplate.
There's also the issue of cost; maintaining such prisoners at the tax payers expense for so many years.
I think there is much we can learn from the Nordic folk though about rehabilitative programs...
