Sadly, that has been his demise. He needs some healthy competition, and trust me, when that happens he will start working harder and perform better. As of now, he seems to be in a relaxed mood.

I feel we need a little perspective here. Tamim is an extraordinary player plagued by extraordinarily bad habits that make him look ordinary from time to time, seemingly with more frequency nowadays. Some of those habits are:

1) Benson & Hedges: the bromance of his life. These British-American bruhs don't want him to run without getting tired and losing focus in the process. But the Chittagong lad does try every now and then to manage easy 50s.

2) Kachchi (full plate): the food of Mughal soldiers who lost an empire.

3) Love of underachievement: he's not alone here. Underachievement is a hallmark of our petit-bourgeois culture. The hugely popular phenomena springs from the conviction that we're entitled as a class, and that good things are supposed to happen by osmosis and NOT hard work on our own with dedicated dudes like Coach Salahuddin.

4) Marriage: slows us down with its multifaceted demands.

Not a great fan of TIK. But, such over the top criticism just after a bad day at the office on the very first day of the series is uncalled for, to say the least. Tamim actually played out 28 balls for his 6. This is not a typical Tamim approach to batting as we all know. He was offering solid defensive shots and was clearly trying to see off the new ball. Unfortunately, Eranga worked him out today. He was undone by a very clever round the wicket bouncer at the body which resulted him fending it off and offering a chance to the short leg. Tamim got rattled and, perhaps, thinking offence is the best defence, he tried to pull/hook the next high bouncer and almost cleared the rope. Of course, the better option would have been to duck or sway way from such delivery and nothing to do with it. But, Tamim likes to take the attack to bowlers or likes to hit out of trouble. It has worked for him in the past many times but not today. I was impressed with his approach today until he got out to a superb bit of fielding on the rope and excellent planned bowling. This things happen in cricket. Even Sir Bradman got a duck on his last outing.

What I´m livid with is the approach of the debutant Shamsur. He played way to many shots and showed very little maturity or understanding needed for a Test match. He was treating this match and a Test attack like a BCL/NCL match at the BKSP ground. Clearly, he didn´t have a Test match like game plan nor the temperament. He better put up a much better show in the 2nd Innings or will find himself using the revolving door.

I might upset the apple cart by saying Shakib is ordinary. But, he was just that today. The way he gave away his wicket to a rush shot after getting set is simply unforgiving. He is the most senior player in his side and they needed him today. One didn´t have to be a cricket genius to figure out the need of the hour. When half of the batting order has been bundled out and the team is going through a recovery process is it that difficult to eschew those high percentage shots (even if it has fetched you runs in the past) ! He was the set man and would have known how difficult it would be for a lower order batter to get in on a pitch which was offering enough assistance to the pacers. Couldn´t he take a leaf out of Little Mushy´s approach? It is simply criminal what Shakib did today. He is not putting the team first.

He needs to be more attacking. That will throw the bowlers off their lines and present even more bad balls. He needs to stop tuk tuking like he did in 2010. Of course there will be times he will need to temper his approach like the last innings vs NZ. One of his best innings and very unlucky not to have scored a hundred. If I recall it was a really good ball from Kane Williamson that got him out.

exactly.... i dont think his defenses are technically proficient and barring exceptions, he doesnt have that kind of patience to build an innings or occupy the crease for a long time. Eventually he tries to break the shackles and go after the delivery he shouldnt. He should stick to his quick 50s and than slowing down a bit and aim for those 100s. What that does is breaks the confidence of the bowling unit and even if he falls early, he puts run on the board and makes the fielding captain move back his players a little bit. I would take 7 quick 50s out of 10 innings anyday over 2 100 out of 10.

I did not watch the first half of this match so I don't exactly know what happen.

But a batsman having faced 11 balls and scored zero runs is a sign of a struggling batsman and that too against not so world class bowlers like Sharma and Yadav.
