Default Tributes flow in after death of Richie Benaud

Tributes are flowing in for Richie Benaud after his passing overnight aged 84. Spin legend and Channel Nine commentator Shane Warne, Australia coach Darren Lehman and Test captain Michael Clarke are among those who have paid tribute to Benaud.
Darren Lehmann said Benaud set an incredibly high standard on and off the field. "Richie was truly one of the game's greats," Lehmann said.
"The fact that Australia never lost a series under his captaincy says so much and those standards were just as high when he turned his attention to calling the game. "We loved listening to him commentate when the team was together in the dressing room. When he was on air, we always had the TV volume turned up because his comments were so insightful. "He spent a lot of time talking to players of all ages, passing on his great knowledge and love of the game. What stood out more than anything about Richie is that he always put the game first. "There will only ever be one Richie Benaud. Our thoughts go out to Daphne, John and the entire Benaud family at this sad time."

Rest In Peace. A sad day in cricket.
Quote:
Born in the Sydney suburbs on 6 October 1930, Benaud was taught to bowl leg-spin by his father, Louis, and is one of the few players in history who can lay claim to having mastered the art.
It took him until his 25th Test to pick up his first five-wicket haul, but he became a potent force in Australia's attack, taking 248 wickets at an average of 27.03.
Never afraid to innovate, he single-handedly spun Australia to an unlikely victory in the Old Trafford Ashes Test of 1961 when he became the first player to go round the wicket and bowl into the batsman's footmarks.
England had reached 150-1 in pursuit of 256 when Benaud took five wickets in 25 balls to win the match and series, thus retaining the Ashes.
Quote:
After scoring two of his three career Test centuries on the 1957-58 tour of South Africa, Benaud was rewarded with the Australian captaincy.
With an attacking style that has influenced Australia captains from Steve Waugh to Michael Clarke, the national team blossomed under his leadership, never losing a Test series during his 28 matches in charge.
In the famous tied Test with the West Indies in 1960, Benaud took on a target of 233 in under a day and, coming in with the score at 92-6, scored a belligerent 52 to almost see his side over the line.
Asked for the secret to his success, his reply was modest and witty: "Captaincy is 90% luck and 10% skill. But don't try it without that 10%."
Quote:
Some of Benaud's one-liners have also entered cricketing folklore. During Sir Ian Botham's famous Ashes century at Headingley in 1981, Benaud described one of the all-rounder's sixes with the words: "Don't even bother looking for that. It's gone into the confectionery stall and out again."
When Australia tail-ender Glenn McGrath was once out for two, Benaud quipped that he was "just ninety-eight runs short of his century".
Quote:
According to renowned Australian author, journalist and historian Gideon Haigh, Benaud was "perhaps the most influential cricketer and cricket personality since the Second World War".

One of my earliest and favorite memory is a book by him on playing cricket that I once found in a friend's home. I am pretty sure it was by him.

^^ Exactly. Once a week on BTV, there would be a cricket show from Australia's Channel 9, and Richie Benaud would present and commentate in it. He was the first face of cricket for me

My first memory of him presenting that show on TV was in the late 80s/early 90s. My dad was telling me: "uni ek bhalo cricketer chhilo". For my 5-6 year old mind, I couldn't understand how he could be a cricketer because he was always wearing a coat and talking about other people like Javed Miandad and Kapil Dev who wore whites and played on the field.

RIP Richie

Richie Benaud's tips for commentating
Never ask a statement.
Remember the value of the pause.
There are no teams in the world called 'we' or 'they'.
Avoid cliches and banalities, such as 'he's hit that to the boundary', 'he won't want to get out now', 'of course', 'as you can see on the screen'.
The Titanic was a tragedy, the Ethiopian drought a disaster, and neither bears any relation to a dropped catch.
Put your brain into gear before opening your mouth.
Concentrate fiercely at all times.
Above all, don't take yourself too seriously, and have fun.

Thanks for confirming my fazed memory. That's how my interest in cricket was developed.

He will remain the voice of cricket for me. His and Tony Greig's passing in the past few years really marks the end of eras. Ok, Nasser and Athers the baton has been passed to you. These two are now the best voices on commentary.

Commentators, especially the Asian ones should have learnt a thing or 2 from him, just shut the hell up, too many Commentators talk constantly and ramble on about complete nonsense - just shut the hell up, like Benaud said 'If you can't add to whats on screen, stay quite' - these new guys think they're on radio that they keep going on and on
