Bangladesh better on global corruption index
Dhaka, November 06 (bdnews24.com) - Bangladesh ranks better on the global corruption index, Transparency International said in a report Monday.
The international watchdog said Bangladesh finished third on the index of most corrupt countries with Chad, Congo and Sudan.
Transparency tagged Haiti as the most corrupt country in the world, followed by Iraq, Myanmar and Guinea as the second most corrupt.

wow, right before election. BNP would claim that they have reduce corruption. But reality may be they could not keep pace with the other loosers.

I never trusted this report and is not taking this one as true either.
I always feel, Bangladesh is overportrayed as corrupt country. BD corruption level is definitely skewed by some major corruption by ploitical big shots. Bangladesh occupies lower position due to sampling errors.
In general private sector is almost corruption free and BD should stand somewhere in the middle of the list.

And I assume your analysis has no skew factor or sampling errors?

I am guessing Miraz is an expatriot. If you live in Bangladesh, you must have faced bribary at least once.
If in a nation, every citizen had to bribe at least once, that is a very corrupted nation, probably one of the top. Thus this report makes total sense.

That's my perception after staying 30 years in Bangladesh and working for 6 years in private sector.
TIB takes reports published in the media to percept corruption which can be easily biased due to yellow journalism. Secondly, these reports always include government level corruptions and never shows the transparency in private sectors.
BD has grown significantly in private sector in every sector. Total turnover in private sector will be equal or more than the turn-over in public sector. Then, why always corruption in public sector will be judged for Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for the country? This is lack of professionalism from the part of TIB.
I don't know whether TI of other countries follow the same protocol for CPI.

No disrespect but this is probably the most exaggerated comment I have heard in my life.

May be!!
Top shots in private sector has to follow some corruption ladder set up by the bureaucrats, in genereal sense, private sector's dealing with common people (or, say day to day operation) is almost corruption free.

Miraz that would apply to all countries, not only for Bangladesh. So the RELATIVE positioning is right no matter how skewed the analysis maybe.

Yes indded! I think, there is not a single public sector in BD where general people get the expected survice without bribe. Actually, bribing is not the sole criteria for being corrupted. This is something how peoples feel/enjoy the atmosphere created for them by the concern authority. If you discriminated the peoples based on their social status, like a university professor or a political leader or a corrupted high offcial getting better treatment from public/private sector, to me its also corruption. In BD, it is very common not to apply appropriate law for the certain quarter of people.

A ray of light??
An anecdotal evidence that there are some efforts even in the public sector in BD to check corruptions -
A relative of mine runs a civil engineering construction/consultation outfit in BD and recently was awarded a bridge project through open bidding, being the lowest bidder. But as corruption goes in BD, the next lowest bidder tried to manipulate things with an estimated bribe of about BDT 5 crore, and almost managed the project. Now, my relative lodged a complaint with this agency: http://www.cptu.gov.bd/default.aspx, and was able to get it back. Not only that, there is a formal investigation in this matter and the employees alleged to be apart of this scheme are now facing some form of punishments.
I was very encouraged with this story, although I know that it's nothing compared to the whole mess, but at least there is a little ray of light here and there amidst the entire darkness.

BD was never the most corrupt country, only TIB more corrupt and overshowing with facts than other TI's.
The last time they made us champion, the ministers gave them quite a fresh dholai, and it came out that, TIB's representative in those press functions was a government official, which was illegal, maybe corruption. I believe thats why TIB this time made us third.
Bhutan is 32,thats amazing.

When getting a water line in the city or turning on the water line in the city requires bribe one can imagine the limit of corruption. We are talking about water, a necessity of life. This is not like a Telephone or power or cable services. Where people don't care of human life even, curruption is only the way of life there.

As with previous years, until we sign on the dotted line and give away all our natural resources to the westerners and to the east India company (Tata), we will keep making the list. TI staffers of Bangladesh get their training in eendia. It stinks. TI Bangladesh were very very unhappy that they were unable to keep us at the top, they even said so to the media. If investigated and reported properly, there ain't a way in hell we can top Dubya at this...
We shouldn't pay attention to this BS.

How come Saudi Arabia become more corrupted next to Namibia, Colombia and Cuba? And Russia next to Nepal?
I thought political corruption and bribe doesn't exist in Saudi anyway, how they become more corrupted than above countries? Seems to me mostly it's depends on some world wide Merchant groups ... at the end which belongs to worlds big Merchant ( economic ) countries. Bellow are the surveys used for ranking each country, and those bold parts seems making all the fun.
Quote:
Abbreviations are:
CPIA: Country Policy and Institutional Assessment by the IDA and IBRD
EIU: Economist Intelligence Unit
FH: Freedom House, Nations in Transit
IMD: World Competitiveness Report of the Institute for Management Development
MIG: Merchant International Group
PERC: Political and Economic Risk Consultancy, Hong Kong
UNECA: United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, African Governance Report
WEF: Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum
WMRC: World Markets Research Centre

We are actually 18th most corrupt country according to world bank. This study is more authentic then TI because there sources included academic institutes and donor agencies. they also provide a transparent methodology. U can download both data and the report from here.

This index does not include the post-1/11 Bangladesh. When it does, we'll see more dramatic results Inshallah.
