We are saying the above after the match is over. Think the moment when Shakib requested for a runner-for sure he was having problem when he was RBW. By law, PU has all the rights to rebuff a runner for Shakib, but indubitably its poor sportsmanship. ![smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)

KP, I guess it's a matter of perspective. Sakib can be called unsporting too for asking for a runner for an injury that has not affected his game play (bowling, batting, or fielding), though I am sure he was very uncomfortable playing through pain.

Wish the thread header were in English, so our international audience could participate. A few pommies on this particular subject, we would have a full circus by now....

If you're referring to the T20 WC in 2007, Vettori did give Nazir the runner and later was upset to see him jumping around fine after Pakistan won.

![thumbs up](images/smilies/thumbup.gif) .... with off field injury. And surely it hasn't affected his game in any way.

I personally dont think that a batsman should even ask the opposing captain for a runner, the umpires should make the call, and what Utseya did was very unsporty. Did not expect that from an international cricket captain.
_____Its cricket, the gentlemen's game______

it was Umar GUL, the last batsman.
i remember at the end of the match, some journalist ask Miandad about his reaction and rafiq's greatness: he answered, there is nothing great, its part of the game. rafiq shouldnt have done that.
similar answer was delivered by rashid latif
If rafiq wouldnt do that, we would have our first test win again pak, just like first ODI against pak (big team)
c walsh (WI) did this once too

not at all. sporting spirt means playing it by the rules. batsmen are denied runners frequently by the fielding captain. its nothing new and its certainly not any infringement on the game's 'spirit.'

Anisur Rahman of Bangladesh, many many years back did the same thing against India and didnt run out another player. But Also, Imran Khan, the Pakistani captain also recalled an opposition batsman who started to walk towards the paviliion when he figured out that the batsman was not out but given out by the umpire. There are many gestures like this and Bangladeshi players were always known for their politeness and sportsmanship. Hence, when Shahadat started his stare at his batsman,, it was shocking, unprecedented and unknown to Bangladeshi players.
As Utseya didnt demonstrate his confidence and sportsmanship as a "HOST" captain, Saqib also blasted that refusal to a match winning century. On the same token, we all heard what Saqib was saying between the wicket ( Pitcher majhkhan diye dowra..) and that to me was not much gentelmen-isque either.
At the end, none will remember how Anisur Rahman couldve brought that win against India for us when we were not an ODI playing country, nor will the history book say Rafique saved Pakistan. We lost in both occassions but did win the hearts of many with our sportsmanship behavior. I dont know of any other sports other than circket where the captain has that much influence, power and entitlement. Prosper Utseya failed. As a Host captain, as a player and as a gentleman.

The need for a runner was NOT a result of a game related injury. Shakib could have 'retired hurt'.
The examples of run outs are a different type of issue.
