everytime australia has looked in trouble they've somehow managed to get back on top. wonder what sort of changes we'll see in england's next test series. will they have a mass culling like australia did when they were dominating and lost in england?

It'll be hard to make changes for England. This is supposed to be a team in its prime. And all these guys performed very well until this disastrous tour. It hasn't been just one or two players, it's been a collective failure.

One things for sure is that Cook is gone as captain. Question is who will take over? Seems like Bell's the best bet. You'd have to say Carberry will have a tough time making the next Test tour since he's not really young and needed to have a big series. They'll likely go with a young opener. Tremlett is unlikely to make it next time around. Other then that though expect the same guys.

The most shocking performance drop ever. Few mnths ago the england team were talking about how beating South Africa is the ultimate challenge. This team beat the aussies regularly and beat India in India so a performance like this from pretty much the same playng 11 is shocking.

i don't know how likely it is but commentators were speculating that pietersen might retire after this series or if not then it might not be that far off and if english selectors are anything like aussie ones then it might mean the end for pietersen if he really is looking to go soon (as we witnessed with mike hussey as soon as he announced test retirement he was cut from all formats).

Pietersen can still be a huge player for England in the shorter formats, especially during worldcup 2015
whatever problems England is facing at the moment is more mental than anything else. Perhaps the desire to fight is just not there anymore

he could still be a huge player in tests as well, don't know why they were even throwing it out as an option he's still only 33.

I think Flower needs to go. He did his bit by taking England to the top but it seems the pressure in the dressing room is too much for the senior players. Perhaps a new coach with a new approach will energize this team again just like Lehman did for Australia

If Pieterson retires then England will become a mid tier Test team at best. England needs him for at least 2-3 years but knowing Pieterson, he could retire at any point.

As for Australia, they took care of business at home. Now the big test is against South Africa. The only player that seems to be in a bit of trouble is Bailey. Other then that, they seem all set. Can't wait for the series already. It should be a great one.

i hope they continue with bailey, he looks better than anyone else plus he's often been in a position where he's needed to score quick runs so his role hasn't been to stay at the crease for long periods.

he's only 33, if he wants he could be around for 5 or so years but like you say he could literally retire at any moment, that's not a good thing for the selectors so if he's out of form and they're worried he might retire they could drop him to groom a young talent.

England have too many problems.

1. Defensive mindset = Whenever they got bogged down, they scored even slower and got out. Aus on the other hand counter attacked when they lost early wickets.

2. Poor selection = Their bowling is poor. Graham Onions is their best county bowler and was not selected. Compton is better than Carberry. In Perth, they left out their tallest bowlers Tremlett and Rankin.

3. Lack of confidence = Trott left the team stranded. He is the core of their batting. Swann did the same after 3 tests. Being senior players, you don't give up easily. You grind it out. When the going gets tough, you don't quit but get tougher.

That's why I don't like England team in general. They are always too defensive. They need more Flintoffs.

About Pietersen, he should not retire. Who do they have to replace him? They still could not replace Strauss in opening and now Trott is gone. Bairstow, Ballance are no replacement for KP.

On Aus, they played their skins out. The best display of fast bowling in a very long time. Johnson was scary and Harris/Siddle was excellent. This 11 is not best crop of Aus, they are made up of decent players (Smith, Bailey, Rogers, Lyon) compared to their golden past, but they played as a unit and became the 3rd Aussie team ever to win Ashes 5-0.

I think England need to address the human side of things as well. Why would senior players such as Trott and Swann choose to leave midway through the series? I am sure in a healthy team environment this would not have happened. Under Lehmann Australia is looking very good especially because he brought the best out of Warner and Haddin and also made sure Watson is in a good space mentally.

Just got back from watching the Aussies having their last laugh.... It was pretty awful to watch England batting.... Reminded me of us 10 yrs back. This must have been England's worst overseas tour ever.
