LFC statement: Rodgers on Suarez

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers today issued the below statement following the announcement that an agreement has been reached with Barcelona for Luis Suarez to leave the club.

"Luis is a very special talent and I thank him for the role he has played in the team in the past two years, during my time at Liverpool.

"I think he would be the first to accept he has improved as a player over that period, along with the team and has benefited from being here, as we have benefited from him.

"The club have done all they can over a sustained period of time to try to keep Luis at Liverpool. It is with great reluctance and following lengthy discussions we have eventually agreed to his wishes to move to Spain for new experiences and challenges. We wish him and his young family well; we will always consider them to be friends.

"We are focused on the future, as we strive to continue with the progress we have made and build on last season's excellent Barclays Premier League campaign.

"I am confident we will improve the team further and will be stronger for this coming season, when we will be competing on all fronts; domestically and in the greatest club competition in the world, the Champions League.

"If there is one thing the history of this great club teaches us, it is that Liverpool FC is bigger than any individual. I hope our supporters continue to dream and believe that we are moving forward and with continued improvement and progression, together we will bring the success we all crave and deserve."

Suarez was always going to leave. But that positives for Liverpool are that they will be strapped for cash and can now probably purchase a class CB and maybe also a striker to fill Suarez's shoes.

People saying that Liverpool need a replacement for Suarez asap. Yeah sure you guys could sign a world class striker (would be difficult to) but for me i don't quite think you guys need to. Sturridge can quite easily fill Suarez's shoes and i have a feeling that Liverpool will still be racking in goals like last season even without Suarez. Having Lambert as a backup is more than enough imo for the time being.

Liverpool striker Iago Aspas to join Sevilla on season-long loan deal

Sevilla have signed Liverpool striker Iago Aspas on a season-long loan.

The Spanish club may exercise the right to buy the 26-year-old at the end of the campaign, with a three-year deal already agreed.

Aspas joined Liverpool from Celta Vigo at the beginning of last season for a fee of £7m.

But the Spaniard made only 14 appearances for the Reds - nine of them as a substitute - and scored just one goal.

His move is subject to passing a medical.

Liverpool complete £20m signing of Lazar Markovic

Liverpool have completed the £20m signing of Serbia international winger Lazar Markovic from Benfica.

Markovic, 20, becomes the club's fourth signing this summer.

A former Partizan Belgrade player, Markovic helped Benfica win the Portuguese title last season after joining the club in the summer of 2013.

Liverpool have already signed Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana from Southampton and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen.

In profile: Lazar Markovic

Lazar Markovic today became the Reds' fourth signing of the summer so far - and Liverpoolfc.com presents an in-depth lowdown on the talented attacker...

Brendan Rodgers added one of Europe's brightest young stars to his exciting Liverpool squad when versatile Serbian attacker Lazar Markovic became the Reds' fourth signing of a busy 2014 summer transfer window.

Gifted in possession, blessed with searing acceleration over short and long distances and diligent defensively, the 20-year-old excels on either flank or in a more traditional central position - and his progression to Anfield has been rapid.

Born in Cacak, a central city in Serbia, on March 2, 1994, Markovic's fledgling football ambitions started locally but before he was a teenager, Partizan Belgrade - one of the country's biggest and most successful clubs - enrolled Lazar into their academy.

Five years on, their faith bore initial fruit in May 2011, when the forward stepped onto the field for a maiden first-team appearance. Still aged just 17 and wearing No.50 on his shirt, the youngster was introduced for the final 18 minutes of a 2-1 victory over Sloboda Uzice.

The next season, 2011-12, would prove to be his breakthrough in every regard. Now a regular member of the Partizan XI, he rose from the bench to fire his first goal for the side in August 2011 and would add five more from 26 league appearances to help scoop the championship.

Having represented his country at U17 and graduated to U21 level with distinction, senior international recognition arrived in February 2012 - a proud moment for Markovic, as he started a friendly against Armenia and clocked up 69 minutes.

Nine months later, the Serbian celebrated his opening strike at that level; he acrobatically contorted his body to connect with a back-post cross and force home the deadlock-breaker in a 3-1 friendly win against Chile.

Lazar and his club were lifting silverware at the conclusion of the following campaign too, with seven strikes contributing to a successful defence of the Serbian title, and his personal development matured with the experience of Europa League football.

Still at the tender age of 19, by now the rest of the continent had been alerted to the Partizan winger's special characteristics and speculation surrounding a transfer - perhaps to the Barclays Premier League - was rife.

Ultimately, it was Portuguese giants Benfica, known as a leading club in the honing and fine-tuning of potential, who captured Markovic's signature. The attacker committed himself to five years at the Estadio da Luz and a new chapter in his career was underway.

A debut for his new employers brought a dramatic stoppage-time goal past Gil Vicente; six days later, Lazar again joined proceedings from the bench and once more found the target in crucial circumstances, this time past Sporting CP.

The campaign was outstanding in every sense for the Serbian and Benfica. He featured in all but four matches as the Portuguese championship was secured by seven points - a third straight title triumph for Markovic. Further celebrations followed with glory in Portugal's League Cup and FA Cup to complete a domestic treble.

On the European front, the attacker tested his skills five times in the Champions League and subsequently contributed to a run that carried Benfica to the Europa League final in Turin. Suspension forced him to watch from the sidelines, however, as Jorge Jesus' charges were beaten on penalties by Sevilla.

But Liverpool manager Rodgers had already seen plenty enough of Markovic to warrant serious interest from the Reds, with the Serbia international's skillset identified as suitable to complement the dynamic options already available at Anfield.

So within weeks of announcing the capture of fellow creative force Adam Lallana from Southampton, Kopites were treated to the confirmation that Lazar had joined the squad after completing the formalities and signing a long-term deal at Melwood.

Rodgers: Markovic deal is exciting

Liverpool have added a player of proven European quality to their squad in the form of Lazar Markovic, Brendan Rodgers believes.

The forward inked a long-term deal at Melwood on Tuesday to complete his move from Benfica and become the Reds' fourth summer signing

Rodgers feels he has acquired a 20-year-old who will prove to be an exciting addition to the ranks - but is confident there's much more to come from Markovic.

The boss told Liverpoolfc.com: "This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options, for the coming season.

"He was hugely impressive for Benfica last season and has proved he has the ability to produce the goods in European competition as well, which will be important for us.

"Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen. He will fit in with the way we play at Liverpool.

"Getting him at such a young age is also very pleasing for us, because we will be able to work with him to develop his talent within our group and improve him even further.

"He is the sort of character who is hungry to get better and progress; this is what we look for in players."

Fabio Borini: Sunderland agree £14m deal with Liverpool

Liverpool have agreed a £14m deal to sell striker Fabio Borini to fellow Premier League club Sunderland.

Borini, 23, spent last season on loan at the Black Cats and helped them avoid relegation.

Despite the development, Borini started for Liverpool on Saturday in a pre-season friendly at Preston.

"It's an agreement between the clubs but nothing agreed with the player as of yet," Reds boss Brendan Rodgers told BT Sport.

"He is still very much a Liverpool player."

Borini scored 10 goals during his stint at the Stadium of Light and picked up the club's young player of the year award.

Loic Remy: Liverpool agree £8.5m fee with QPR for France striker

Liverpool have agreed an £8.5m fee with QPR to sign France striker Loic Remy.

The bid activated a release clause in the contract of the 27-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Newcastle, scoring 14 Premier League goals.

He is now expected to discuss personal terms and have a medical with the Reds before completing the move.

Remy was part of the France squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil and made two appearances as a substitute.

He moved to Newcastle on loan after QPR's relegation from the Premier League in 2013.

The arrival of Remy at Anfield is likely to coincide with the departure of Fabio Borini, after Liverpool accepted a £14m offer for the Italian forward from Sunderland, where he spent last season on loan.

Remy joined QPR during their last top-flight spell, making an £8m switch from French club Marseille in January 2013.

He scored six league goals for the west London club but could not stop them being relegated that season.

QPR regained their Premier League status at the first attempt by beating Derby in the Championship play-off final in May.

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom is set to join West Bromwich Albion on loan.

After watching the 21-year-old play in the Reds' 2-1 pre-season friendly win at Preston on Saturday, manager Brendan Rodgers said: "West Brom are an excellent club and and it will be another chance for Andre's education and development to continue."

Wisdom had a successful loan spell at Derby in the Championship last season.

Reds confirm Wisdom loan deal

Liverpool have announced that Andre Wisdom is to spend the 2014-15 season on loan at West Bromwich Albion.

The England U21 international spent a very successful campaign at Derby County last season, when he helped the Rams get to the play-off final.

After coming through the Academy, the young defender was handed his debut by Brendan Rodgers - when he featured against Young Boys in the Europa League and also found the net.

Wisdom has made 22 appearances in a red shirt, scoring one goal.

Signing Mohammad Nazimuddin holds the key to Liverpool (or any team's) championship chances, period.
