God this is horrible! According to BBC due to high tide in Bay of Bangal river water cannot escape to sea. India is still flooding. So water comming from India will be in BD for a while. 58 people died in 1 day alone. 70% land is under water. 40% of Dhaka is under water. This is the worst ever.

It’s literally alarming.
“The United States said it would provide 50,000 dollars in emergency assistance to flood-hit Bangladesh, which the World Food Program has warned could face a major humanitarian crisis”.

Bangladesh need permanent flood control system. 70% of the land is under water.
70% off 56000 sq mile = 39200 sq mile
39200 sq mile = 3097600 sqft.
if each ft contain 4 ft of water in avg
then total flood water is 12390300 cuft of water about 12.5 million cuft.
Is it possible to make a reservior such big to contain 12.5 million cuft of water? Its hard but not impossible. We should go for it.
In turms of money it will be beneficial too. This kinda massive flood hit bangladesh every 15 years. As sea level is rising this massive flood will be more frequent. It may come in interval of 10 years in next 100 years. If each flood cost 3 billion dollar damage in turms of crops, infrastructure, and business wise then it will cost Bangladesh 30 billion dollar in next 100 years. This flood system will cost less then fraction. Bangladesh should go for it. What do you guys think?

What happened to El Nino this year?
Space images show relentless floods in Bangladesh
Flooding is shown as dark blue and bright white to highlight two ways in which the satellite Aqua can spot ground water (Image: NASA GSFC)
Satellite images have revealed the devastating impact of recent flooding in Bangladesh, with two thirds of country submerged in water.
Pictures taken by the NASA satellite Aqua on 22 July show water covering areas of Bangladesh and eastern India.

PS: Thanks for all the pictures mzia

Here is a link to a full resolution pic of the above space image: link
hs.. the light blue/aqua are clouds.. but check out the deep blue parts. That area must be very deep in water to get that kind of colour. It's like a mini-sea..
So why such devastating floods this year? Global warming? Deforestation in the Himalayas? El Nino? Does anyone know of the stats of floods pre-1971?
Feel so bloody hopeless..

According to BBC total damage of this flood is 7 billion dollar. 7 with a B. Bangladesh 1 year budget is less than 7 billion dollar. We can make a parmanent flood control system in 7 billion dollar. This type of flood is coming soon again.
