I think many of us already did through other means. Please do not let that itself be the decider (and I am talking to anyone here).

Is BC a registered charitable organization? If so, I can double my donation via my company (they match 100% up to 5k).

I have a question. Is paypal taking certain portion of the donation as transaction fee?

Paypal is taking a fee. I will email them to see if there is a way for them to waive the fees.
BC is not registered as a charitable organization. Anyone in the US (Virginia) know what steps are needed to become one and what the consequences would be?

In MI, you just have to open a company with a $50 fee and $25 renewal fee each year, select the company type (like LLC, INC or nonprofit). If you just google how to open a nonprofit in Virginia, you should get all the information you need. In MI, it can be done online, but takes about 2 weeks to get the tax ID (you have to use that with paypal to get your charitable status).
If you go through all that, the donations done by people also becomes tax deductible (for itemized deduction that is).

Thanks a lot for doing this. Is it possible to give us a daily update of the total amount raised in the opening post so that we know where we stand?

Tehsin bhai..here some steps to become a non-profit organization. An org can be an non-stock corporation or an LLC. Once a non-profit founder(s) has determined the vision, here are the suggested steps, in order, to creating a non-profit:
1) Incorporate as a Virginia Non-Stock Corporation or Limited Liability Company (LLC) through the State Corporation Commission's Office of the Clerk.
2) Apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN or EIN) through the IRS. Apply online or download, print, and mail the SS-4.
3) File IRS Form 1023 to request 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
4) Register with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as a charitable organization so that you may accept donations.
5) Obtain The registration package (online). You cannot register get a sales and use tax exemption from the Virginia Department of Taxation until you have registered ( http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/allforms.shtml#charitable)
6) Apply for Commonwealth of Virginia non-profit status using VATAX NonProfit Online ( http://www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm...on#ApplyOnline)
7) Check if you will have local business zoning, home occupancy, or license requirements.

We (by we, I mean my organization and I - not BC) have already donated BDT 1,250,000 in the first phase, but most of it went to the emergency supplies. Now, we are gearing up for another round.
I am glad BC members are doing this; it's a noble cause. Please make sure you have a plan of how to disburse the funds once you get it. If you give it to a number of people, then the disbursement per person might not make a difference in their lives. Let's say you split up BDT 500,000 between 10 victims of the tragedy. They will each get BDT 50,000; that isn't a lot of money and most of it will likely be spent in a few months' time to pay for medical expenses.
What we are doing is selecting victims of the tragedy and then dedicating a large chunk of money for each victim. Right now, we are thinking of BDT 500,000 per victim. Then, we put that money in an FDR and the monthly proceeds from that FDR (approximately BDT 5,000/month) will go towards that victim for the rest of his or her life. So, somebody who has become paralyzed or has lost a limb and cannot work, will get a monthly stipend for as long as he or she lives and can have a source of income for as long as he or she lives. The government (and several organizations) are providing one-time grants/gifts/donations/whatever you want to call them, but I think most of the victims would end up spending that money in providing for medical necessities and we would rather provide the victims with life-long financial support. So far, we have identified two victims that we can support. Inshallah we are looking at providing life-long financial support for several other victims.
I think with the fundraising target that BC has set, it can support at least one such victim. It's just an idea that I thought I should share with you all.

Doesn't matter how much we donate, it might help to save a life. Please donate.

Final amount - $1525.78.
I intentionally left it open a few days extra to allow any additional donations.
At this point, I will close the books. For transparency, I am thinking about posting at least the initials of the donors with the amount. Would that be okay with everyone? I will send individual emails to the donors to get their permission before I proceed.
Thank you for your patience.

Thanks Tehsin bro and all for a great effort. May this donation be gone directly to the victims/their families.
Qs - why don't you leave it open?
