West Indies' leading players have ended their strike and made themselves available for international duty following the appointment of an arbitrator to resolve their dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board. Chris Gayle and other star players will now take part in the one-dayers against Bangladesh starting Sunday.
The original 13-man squad picked by the board for the Bangladesh Tests had boycotted the series due to a dispute over contractual issues. The strike forced the selectors to pick a second-string side which lost both Tests against Bangladesh.
The WICB and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), which is negotiating on the cricketers' behalf, agreed to resolve the impasse by mediation, after meeting with Guyana president Bharat Jagdeo, who is also chairman of the 15-nation trading bloc Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). Both sides agreed to the appointment of former Commonwealth secretary Shridath Ramphal as arbitrator.
"It was agreed that in the light of the Mediation Agreement which the Parties expect to lead to the resolution of outstanding issues all the players will make themselves available for selection," they said in a joint statement.
"The mediation team, with assistance from the Caricom secretariat, would begin work immediately," they said in the statement. "Both parties have taken this step, mindful of the interest of their respective organisations but conscious also of their wider responsibility to the people of the West Indies and the international sport of cricket."
The agreement came hours after a weakened squad was announced by the board for the upcoming one-dayers against Bangladesh.

EXCLUSIVE: WICB to retain Reifer led squad
Despite the regular players making themselves available for selection, information from a well placed source, is that the West Indies Cricket Board will not change the squad selected for the First and Second Digicel One Day Internationals against Bangladesh in Dominica.
The Floyd Reifer led squad will remain in place.
Full squad: Floyd Reifer (Captain), Darren Sammy (Vice Captain), David Bernard Jr, Travis Dowlin, Andre Fletcher, Rawl Lewis, Nikita Miller, Nelon Pascal, Kieran Powell, Dale Richards, Kemar Roach, Devon Smith, Devon Thomas, Gavin Tonge
This would mean regular players such as captain Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Jerome Taylor and others will remain at home despite being available for selection following the WICB/WIPA/Caricom meeting in Guyana on Tuesday.
Following a fruitless initial meeting between the WICB and WIPA negotiating teams in Trinidad after the originally selected players boycotted playing for the West Indies, WIPA requested that Caricom mediate between the parties.
Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo convened a meeting on Tuesday in Georgetown, the Guyanese capital, and the players agreed to make themselves available for selection.
With four full days remaining before the First Digicel ODI on Sunday there is clearly enough time for a first choice squad to be assembled but it appears as though the WICB will stick with the players it had contracted.
The replacement squad lost the Digicel Test Series 2-0, allowing Bangladesh their first ever overseas Test Series win and their first ever back-to-back wins. Eight of the players from that Test squad are in the ODI squad with six players coming in.
The eight are: Reifer, Sammy, Bernard Jr, Dowlin, Miller, Pascal, Richards and Roach. The six who have joined them are: Fletcher, Lewis, Powell, Smith, Thomas and Tonge.

Well, just to be fair, a few things need to be said.First, I really hope that WI doesn't just ditch the players that helped save WCIB's face. This is very important. Some of these players like Richards and Sammy should get their due chance. Second, the performers of this Test series should not be forgotten. I think even if they are not chosen for the ODI series, WCIB should treasure these talents and give them a fair chance to play.

That would be a nasty decision if they indeed are only going with Reifer and co.

Gayle and co end strike: Available for Bd One day series.

now i am super excited. lets beat this west indies team also. It shouldnt be difficult. west indies test team tried to prove something and try to show they are capable of being part of main team. But west indies main team has different attitude, that would be their weakness.

Cricinfo = tortoise, except it never wins the race. Besides, its title is misleading. The players have made themselves available for selection - doesn't mean the selectors will comply.
RS bhai's article is probably more accurate.

Man, if they decide to play the full XI at the last minute, we could totally catch 'em off guard in the first ODI. Maar Ashrafuilla thukku Shakibba maar!!

does the WICB really want to lose the series 3-0...if the players have made themselves available, its a no brainer to select them, if only to save face.

Dear Shuntuks,
If it not troublesome could you please modify the title and add "available for WI-BD ODI /T20 series".
May be ask the Mods help on that.
Thanks.
Mijan.

I hope the WI board gets some sense and plays the top XI. It will be awesome if we can beat their main side in the ODI series...

I also like to see WI best eleven playing against us, but there are few questions ...
1. How can WICB dump the contract they made with players for thise series? [played test matches already ]
2. How can WICB change ODI team after officially announcing the names?
3. Will it be fare to those players who made themselves available in a crucial moment? Could be another problem for WICB.
So my guess is, WICB wont be able to select those rebels in this series, but may be after this series YES.

I am glad the real guns are available now. Bangladesh has a morale boosting victory against the crappy Windies side now its time to prove themselves against the real Windies team.
We have the psychological advantage.
