^ Sure, he could have said that there were actual reports from many parts of the country of vote dacoity. Or simply that, he doesn't have the information to comment on that. Or that it did happen, but wouldn't have changed the results of the election, more specifically relating to his constituency.
He will learn fast enough, how to mince his words. He's a good cricketer, will learn the ropes pretty soon in politics as well. Though, with no opposition in horizon, the wise strategy might just be to parrot the lines coming from party office.
Anyway, brave man Mash to step into politics. If he ever thought people were harsh on him on the field, well it will be 10 times worse in politics.
