dont you think ?Record of 373 Sixes is amazing
I got wondered when it cam,e to my knowledge that cricket World cup 2007 made a big record.
The World Cup of 2007 in the West Indies witnessed a new record of maximum number of fours and sixes. A total of 51 matches were played in the World Cup in which batsman hit 373 sixes. The teams which opened the innings scored 242 sixes, while the chasing teams scored 131 sixes. This World Cup saw a new record of the highest number of sixes. In the last World Cup of 2003 (South Africa), there were a total of 265 sixes in 52 matches that were played.
is here any one who can let me know about the previous records of sixes in world cup ?

Average number of sixes per match in each World Cup perhaps gives a better picture of the increasing number of sixes being hit.
Going by the given stats for the past 2 WCs :
WC 2007 had 7.3 sixes per match (6 x 373 in 51 matches).
WC 2003 had 5.1 sixes per match (6 x 265 in 52 matches).
I will try and get the numbers for the previous WCs.

This WC had way more more minnows I think (or crapper minnows)

Increased number of associates taking part in the tournament is obviously a reason for such a higher number of sixes being hit than the previous editions of the WC. Also, One Day cricket has changed. 250-270 is no longer a "very good" total in general anymore... 300+ seems to be the par in many cases. 400+ seems to be the ultimate target.

Mahir, can you find out for 1996 Wills World Cup too? jayasuriya, kaluwitharana, gurusinha, de silva and ranatunga were on a roll then with 6s and 4s. In fact they came with the strategy of going over the top in the first 15 overs if I remember correctly.

Sure. I will try and compile the numbers for all the WCs whose scorecards have sixes recorded properly.
And Yes, it indeed was the Lankan opening duo who redefined aggression during early overs in the mid-90s - first step towards a changed game of cricket in the smaller version. Test matches have changed too, if I am not too carried away, with recent big-hitting top-order batsmen like Sehwag, Gayle scorings tons with a very high SR.
