On a serious note, never fired a gun in my life let alone owning one, I expect my strong arms and kick boxing lessons to do the trick

It is illegal in most states of Australia including NSW. Pepper spray and mace are classified as prohibited weapons by Australian laws. Western Australia is the only exception where these are considered as controlled weapons. That means pepper spray is legal in Western Australia but it is restricted.

Well semi automatic and automatic are banned here.
Altho their are some guns that fringe on semi automatic.
Its loosened up a bit,mostly farmers buy them.

Lol, you have to buy a safe with electronic lock, ammo and the firearm cannot be kept in the same place. Automatic weapons are banned and semi-automatics are restricted to the public.

Do they have gun range in India? I am sure they do, you should go there once.

I went to gun range couple of times but the first time I held a rifle was when I was visiting my grandmother's village in chittagong.. there was for whatever reason a Bangladeshi army post. So being so young (maybe was ~7) - i was curious by their presence .... one of the guy there let me held a rifle (while he was holding me) and gave me a blank shell as a token...

I was so happy - i still remember to this day. The gun range visit however gave me headache and I didnt really enjoy it that much. Thought it was a waste of money.

Anyways the actual gun control issue is a tough one... besides the most simplest of weapons, guns (ie assault rifle) for public sale should ideally be banned. In USA you can never ban it as it is a constitutional right.. but the laws (each state) need a lot of review and a lot of restrctions for access.... including centralilzing data (meaning when you put your ID you are able to see esxactly what he bought previously and the rest of his life)... so out of the ordinary purchase can be reviewed. Why does one guy need to buy more than one rifle? But it seems like in many states it is just way to simple to buy guns...

No where in the developed world, mass shooting is as prevenlant as in the united states. That says something is wrong.

Shooting ranges are there but I have never been to one, I consider myself a military enthusiast so do know a little about firearms although never held one

You see Gun laws in India are extremely strict and almost impossible for an average civilian to get a license which is actually praise-worthy, third world country with a gun culture is a dangerous combination, see what is happening in Pak.

I heard even military grade weapons are easily available in US, I don't understand why should a civilian be allowed to own assault/semi-automatic rifles. Shotguns, pistols are still okay.
