Steve Irwin, the world famous Australian Crocodile Hunter has sadly passed away by a stingray wound earlier today at around 11.00 am brisbane time. I just heared the news on tele now, shocked and sad.
Many of u must hv heard of him or seen him on television, offcourse here in Australia and mostly, in United States. Infact, he was more famous in US than here.
My tribute to him and condolence to his young family.

My condolences to his family. I used to be crazy about this guy's show. It was really entertaining stuff. His death a complete shock to me. I have seen this guy handle snakes and crocs and what not and his death from a stingray wound shows that one can never know how and when his call will come.
My mom and sister would be shocked to hear this news, they always always teased me about this show and his famous words "danger danger danger " in his typical aussie accent is well known in our home courtesey my love for the show.Indeed very sad to hear this news.

the man who has fought with crocs, deadly snakes and all that other "dangerous" creatures u can name, has died of wound from stingray! This is the 3rd known case in Australia of someone dying of such wound and first since 1937!
Apparently the sting pierced thru his heart and he had a cardiac arrest and probably died on the spot!
Really, goes to show that how vulnerable we r as a mere mortal.
No one knows how and when they will face their end!
Truely, sad indeed.

Extremely sad.
He was no doubt one of the handful faces of Australia.
I heard the news while travelling in the bus on radio but didnt believe. After getting home and watching 9 bulletin on it I was totally shocked.
My utmost condolence to his family. Especially his kids are very young.

I was at Uni this afternoon when I heard the news. My brother called me during a lecture to tell me. At first I thought it was all an elaborate hoax. But after seeing those pictures, it's just sunk in that Steve is no longer with us.
It's actually bigger news than Big Kev's premature death back in December 2005 ( does anyone even remember that?).
I know it's not the time to be jovial, but heres a lighthearted joke I heard from a mate.
It's kinda lame, but I hope it brightens spirits.

Anyways, rest in peace mate. The pesky media can't get to you now.

Just saw the news, the world has lost a great wildlife icon. I loved this guy's show and how ironic how he died after all the dangerous animals and reptiles he handled. At least he died doing what he loved most. May Allah rest his soul in peace.

Its pretty much like the death of Bruce Lee, Elvis, actor James Dean. Unexpected, horrific and highly upsetting.
But Irwin's overconfidence with animal is to be blamed. When you play with fire, sooner or later you will be burnt.

I am very sad to hear this news. Steve Irwin is a great, loveable character. he is so down to earth, and his enthusiasm is infectious. I saw a re-run of Andrew Denton's interview of him last night. He was so funny and likeable - there was an innocence about him that is truly unique. What struck me most is so truly passionate he was about wildlife, and conserving and protecting wildlife and their habitat. Surely, such people who show compassion for Allah's creatures and His world are liked very much by Him, so may Allah give Steve Irwin peace.
The world has lost a great person.

Sure, his handling of animals is risky, and he has probably had many "near misses" before. But you can't "blame" him for that - it is his job to handle animals; how else can he do his job? Although it may seem ridiculous at times, Steve's style of handling animals makes us feel more comfortable with animals such as crocs and snakes, so we in turn show more compassion for these animals. That was his ultimate aim: for people to have respect for ALL animals - not just the cute and furry ones.

actually logically it makes sense. He is a pro. So he basically can walk away from any death trap that he knows of. Since this is such a rare occurrence, not enough pre-caution was taken.
I used to love this guy. His appearances at Jay Leno were very enjoyable. Very sad indeed. Now that I think about the incident with him and his child with the crocodile, authorities were right. It doesn't matter how in control he thinks he is. He can't endanger a child's life like that.

Poor stingray. It is probably the most hated living creature on earth right now, well... after George Bush.

This is indeed very freakish. Just few weeks back my son was petting stingrays at the Atlanta aquarium. They are absolutely harmless if you are not in the water with them (touching from above the water) or touching from front. As long as you are safe distance from the tail its fine. Water parks all over the world encourage kids to pet them. I think deaths from Sting Ray in the entire recorded human history is maybe a dozen and even injuries are very very rare even for scuba divers. Orpheus is right, because injuries from Sting Rays are so rare they probably didn't take enough precaution. Some think the String Ray felt threatened being sandwiched between the cameraman and Steve who was unfortuantely on its top and got the tail lashing. Steve even pulled the barb from his own heart (it was videotaped) before dying within minutes afterwards.

For someone who handles tigers, crocodiles and giant python, getting stung in the chest by some seemingly harmless stingray was probably the last thing in mind.

Apparently, they have the footage of his last minutes alive. He was seen bravely pulling out the barb out of his chest and collapsing immediately.
But the tape is being cosidered too shocking for public veiwing, as it shows the actual dying moments of a man. The police has already seen it but unfortunately we might never get to see it.
Not that i want to see it anyway. The news of his death is bad enough. I dont want to see how he died. Too much of dark reality to consume for the brain.

That decision rest with his wife. I get a feeling that we might actually get to see it.
Irwin always wanted to have every thing filmed. I am sure if he wouldnt have mind the world watching how he died.
His wife turned down the offer of state funeral.
