I think Burma gov will be more willing to accept us than westerners because we never poked any finger in them (whether we should or should not poke in their matter can be a different discussion)
Yesterday Bangladesh sent her second relief cargo airplane to Burma with 10 ton food/supply and 21 specialist.

UN blasts Myanmar for visa policy on Aid workers... the response of the military junta is a big embarrassment for the whole world. This reminds me of the cyclone that hit bangladesh in 1970 and pakistani government did not care to help the bangladeshis during the crisis. We all know what happened next.

There is nothing much anyone can do if the nutcases who run Burma has no interest in saving it's own people.

Given the current death toll, I doubt any team can do anything about it. These kind of government makes Hasina/Khaleda government look like angels. At least they don't stop relief from coming in (even though steal some of it in their houses).

International Media did not play it's part before the cyclone hit!. It happened with CIDR aswell. Such a strong cyclone was looming next to our countries and you would not find any media was paying any attention to it. They all started now after they saw many people died. THat's a great news point for them.

Nevertheless Bangladesh took a better preparation for Nargis then Burma.

Nargis wasn't as strong as CIDR, but I think it hit during the High Tide which caused a Tsunami. Also people did not prepare for it. I don't think even Burma govt paid any attention to it.

Did Bangladesh govt tried to alert burmies govt at all ?

Given how the Burmese government is turning a blind eye to all vicitims, I doubt they would have done anything at all.

Besides, the whole world knew of Nargis at least days before it made it's landfall. There was nothing Burmese Govt. didn't know that we did. Especially the cyclone was heading their way.

People in Nicobar & Andaman Islands are extremely lucky the storm just circled around them.

The western establishments and the western media are too concerned about the Junta. They are viewing this as an opportunity to pressurize the military government. Not the best way to do it, but they will take any chances that are offered.

******

Thinking about the situation, another thought just crossed my mind, although I am not sure why it hadn't come to me earlier. In Information Theory as formulated by Claude Shannon, information content is inversely proportional to the probability of something happening. A cyclone not killing people is not big in information content. But a cyclone killing one hundred thousand people is enormous in terms of information content.

The multi-million, possibly multi-billion dollar information industry that is the Global Media doesn't really care about the actual humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in Burma. What they truly care about is the information content, and they are probably extremely happy inside that Cyclone Nargis happened and killed so many people. They have to; Shannon's theory dictates that they do.

Billion dollar for sure. That's sad, but true. I wouldn't say 'extremely pleased' at the thought of death (or is everybody solely money-hungry these days and i didn't realise?) but they probably won't be too upset with the extra dough at the end of the day. God, can't even read the news without contributing to some rich guy's already disgustingly large bank account.

What's wrong with that? It's good to hear of large bank accounts especially when all we can hear is poverty stricken people suffering here and there.

The world is not so poor afterall.
