Stars vie for Jamindari in first TV reality show

Western-style celebrity reality show will hit Bangladesh's small screen next month with 10 celebrities fighting for the inheritance of a 100-year Jamindari (feudal lordship) in a battle royale determined by viewers voting.

Film actors Fardin Khan and Shimla, small-screen stars such as Shimul, Shariar Nazim Joy and Elora Gawhar will be locked up for about two months in a Jamindari Palace as they battle to be the heir to a dead Jamindar.

The reality show called Uttradhikar will be aired on Channel i from November 5 twice a week on Monday and Thursday. Nokia, the world's larget mobile phone maker, is sponsoring the show.

Other stars joining the inheritance battle are Tushar Khan, actor and comedian, Jon, a singer, Emi, ramp model, Shanu, beauty pageant winner and model, and Lara Lotus, an actress.

Celebrities are excited to join the country's first TV reality show. "It's an incredible story and really interesting like the stories we'd hear as kids which is why being involved with this is so exciting," said actor Shimul.

"I have to agree this is a once of a lifetime chance which is why I had to say yes,' said Emi, a celebrity model.

":The show has been designed to test and challenge them. They would have to make tougher decision, live under challenging conditions," said Prem Chand, general manager of Nokia's Bangladesh operations.

"This will bring about the aspects of their off screen and on screen persona and it would be interesting to see how they respond to the challenges and balance between the two," he said.

Chand said the heir to the Jamindar would be decided by voting system where viewers will vote for their desired celebrity. The show would end in early January with the declaration of a new Jamindar.

The organisers have not disclosed the amount of the prize money to be awarded to the winner.

Reality show has become the most popular television programmes in the West and India. Millions of viewers watch Big Brother reality show in the United Kingdom every year.

Indian version of the reality show Big Boss hit the screen in 2007 to a huge response.
