Default Poll: Your Opinion About Manjarul Rana

Since chinaman's post about poll topic, i'm a bit shaky about opening this poll. hopefully, this will not fall into the catagory of "garbage". anyway........

i recently see a huge number of post and arguments about rana. Obviously there are some rana haters and some other are rana hearter (trying to make up a word matching hater, u should get the idea about meaning).

where do u stand?

rana,
knows his ability, tries his best. I m not goin 2 say he is very skilled, but his approach is really good. To me, doesnt deserve a place in the test squad but a solid 1day candidate.

BD team is lucky to have rana.

I beleive there is more you need to have then just good technique to be successful and Rana have those in plenty. Thats why he some how managed to score more (than his team mates) in the highest level; it cannot be just pure luck all the time.

Hopefully his bowling will also improve. Regardless he is selected or not in the test team consistenly , BD team is lucky to have players like Rana. Who knows, he can turn out to be another Rafique with even more accomplished batsman. Rafique was also branded as a one day player early in his career.

I don't want to captain the Rana-haters camp, largely because it implies something which is untrue: that I hate Rana! Red Cherry writees 'Very determined mediocre player....good for current National team which lacks application.' I couldn't agree more. Like him or "hate" him, I think both camps will agree that we are only going on and on and on with this Rana debate because the rest of our players have not applied themselves properly. Ashraful, Rajin, Nafees, Aftab should really have averages which are in the mid 30s, but only Bashar is there now. Therefore, Rana's average in the mid 20s makes him a batsman by BD's standards.

Anyway, like I said, I don't hate the guy. I just don't think he is a batsman. You have to give him points for grit and determination and for using his limited skill to the fullest. I saw him bat in all four innings against India in the Test matches, and even in the innings in which he scored sixty odd, he came across to me as a gritty tail-end batsman who really put a price on his wicket and refused to budge. Doesn't have the shots or the fluency of a batsman, but applies himself well. When I read people trying to make him into an opener or stuff like that, I really wonder if we are talking about the same player that I've watched play.

Anyway, if Rana gets into the team, he will on the strength of his own performance. What I think hardly matters anyway, which is why I don't understand why the pro-Rana camp gets so worked up about it. But no points for guessing in which category I voted, good for ODIs, doesn't really have a place in my Test team!

The thread finds its way to the front page already, run agent, run

BTW, this poll is well justified in my view.

And this is where I will start a new fight (or rather, show some stupidity?).

How many of you remember watching Sanath Jayasuriya at his early years? Before he started opening? I have not seen him before he started opening, but watching Jayasuriya play for over 5 years very closely, I find it very interesting to compare Jayasuriya with our very own Monjurul Islam Rana.

I think you'd remember that Rafique was called 'Jayasuriya of Bangladesh' during 1997 Asia Cup? Well, we have not seen Rana much - I mean, in the last 10 overs of an exciting One Day match, but from what I have seen so far of him, both Rana and Jayasuriya has & had the opportunity to become what is Jayasuriya (himself) is today.

Yes, Rana doesn't have much of a batting technique - and from what I remember of Jayasuriya - he also doesn't have much of a technique - not close to our Ashraful anyway. So, in my dreams for the future, if Rana can continue to improve on his shot selection, then he has a good chance of opening in Tests sometimes in the future - on a regular basis. However, with the crying need for a specialist left arm spin bowler in ODIs, Rana may not be able to give too much concentration on his batting - as I would like him to do anyways.

Now here are the points where I think Rana has similarity with Jayasuriya apart from both being left arm spinners & left handed lower order batsman in the beginning of their careers:-

1. Grit & Determination
2. Desire to continuously improve on their game
3. Better concentration level - high as far as Javed Omar's concentration level (of staying at the wicket for hours & hours)
4. Confidence level, which thus far, has not dropped even after his initial 1 year of debut in International cricket - which was quite evident in almost all young debutant players of Bangladesh - a normal phenomenon
5. Better approach & application to the game

Even if you don't agree with me, just state your opinion on the above 4 quality on Rana - as to whether he possesses them or not.

Manjural is a true fighter and one of the most consistent performers in the team. Yes, he has limited shots in his book and limited abilities overall. However, I don't care about all that if the guy's scoring runs and taking wickets, and he did save our butts when we were almost losing the series to Zimbabwe. He is perfect for ODI's when you consider the current bunch that we have. I wouldn't put him in my test side simply because of the availability of better "specialist" players and because I want to try him out more in 3/4 dayers.

come on....would india choose ganguly in their side if all their other "talented" players averaged what they should have? i'm not comparing rana to ganguly, but what i'm trying to say is that ALL teams play the eleven that they play only because similar or greater talents haven't flourished. rana's performance is better than any of ash, aftab, etc etc, and who cares how much talent he has? converting abilities into performance on the main stage is also an important quality, and people have no business playing cricket if they don't have that

9/11 of the guys we choose from time to time to represent us on the cricket field are there because we don't have anyone better - i mean or else who would want someone like aftab or rajin or nafees (all averaging below what a test cricketer should)?
