Humayun Ahmed would be the most obvious name, but in my opinion, his brother Muhammad Jafar Iqbal is better. He writes for kids mostly, but everyone can ejoy those. After that:
Inisul Haque's Maa is a must read for everyone (its free in pdf form from www.somoy.com).
Besides, sheba is my favorite specially masud rana.
beyond that you'll see hundreds of names such as imdadul haque milon, who I do not like. be specific about type, and I think you would be better off going after certain book than writer.

If you want to go indo serious Bangladeshi novels, I would recommend:
শওকত আলী - ওয়ারিশ, প্রদোষে প্রাকৃতজন, উত্তরের ক্ষেপ, দক্ষিনায়নের দিন
অবশ্যই উনি হুমাযুন আহমেদ বা ইমদাদুল হক মিলনের মত mainstream লেখক নন, কিন্তু অনেকের মতে উনি বাংলা সাহিত্যের সাম্প্রতিক কালের সবচাইতে শক্তিমান লেখক।

Not Bangladeshi, but with a Bengali background, JHUMPA LAHIRI is doing pretty good for herself. Watch out for the big screen release of 'The Namesake', direc ted by famed director Mira Nair. I'll tackle the book tomorrow and see what shez all about. She also has a book on short stories - interpreter of maladies.

Anwar Pasha: 'Rifle-Roti-Aorat'
He was killed during the liberation war. The mentioned book can give you some idea of the real life at that time.

Go for the best.
Rabindra nath Thakur and Nazrul. Then Modhushudon. Then read some poetry. This should take you well into your 50's.

Well, if you want to know type, I don't think there is many in current bangladeshi bangla literature. In english, I have the luxury to choose certain type of novel be in adventure or romance. So I read any good work. I was introduce humayun ahmad and I followed him since. In addition to that, Jafor Iqbal, his columns aren't bad either, rather they are very interesting to read. So just give me good novelist beside these two, and I will find a good book by him/her Insh Allah. but you are most welcome to give me notes on good book. Jazak Allah!

4. Life and society - Humayun Azad, Showkat Ali, Nasrin Jahan
5. Science fiction - Jafar Iqbal
6. Light & refreshing fiction - Humayun Ahmed, Anisul Huq, Imdadul Huq Milom
7. Biography - Abdullah Abu Sayeed

The Namesake is an awesome book. Didn't know they're making a movie out of it. Will catch it for sure.

Great list Miraz bhai. I would ask everyone to make time for #3 in the list if they hadn't read already. The book should be in the "must read" category.

Well, many of you may disagree with me but Taslima in her early times wrote some good works. 'Nirbachito Column' is good, may be a bit harsh voice of feminist Taslima but I have to admit it has good substances.

"Ekatturer Dinguli" by Late Jahanara Imam is also a must must read for those who really wants an insight about what happened during 71 and the daily life struggle of the people. Dont know if its the same book as "Muktijuddho" as mentionaed above.

i hv read couple of her books, and yes, she does have a point or two.
but the problem is that sometimes she just blows them out of proportion.
or may be she was born in a wrong country at a wrong time ??
her explicit work wouldnt even fit into current modern day Bangladesh, let alone some 15 years ago when they came out.

Muktijudhdho was the category and in that category I wrote Jahanara Imam and definitely meant "Ekatturer Dinguli".

I don't claim to be a good evaluator of quality of the writers and I don’t read too many non-technical books.
But reading few of her books (not the full book though), I found her writing “not fluid at all”, “amateurish flavor”, and lacks “professional writing”.
Again this is just my own personal opinion. That’s why I was surprised to see her name in the list.

Beacuse it would be easy and less boring to penetrate in her thought process i.e. easier to understand what she is trying to say in her writing.

I'll say it again, since people were talking about libaration war related book and no one else had any comment about it. If you have not read it yet, please go to www.somoy.com and download maa. and read it. it might be a few hours of your life, but trust me it worths it. a must read for anyone who can read bangla.
about taslima nasrin, my opinion is, she just wanted to be famous by writing things that will create controversy. of which she has succeeded 100%.
she will always start with a valid issue. when i read it through, I'll like: true, true, thats right, true....... wait a second, what the heck is she talking about? she will take a valid issue, and will start to interpret it and slowly but surely she will twist the truth and will come to a conclusion that does not make any sense.
if u are not sure what i'm talking about, read her conclusion first, and without reading the middle go to first, and u'll be surprised to see what she have drived from what. but it is done quite nicely and if u read it, seems quite reasoning.
