~Tyson Gay~
this is my salute to the fabulas tyson gay, the american athlete who won the 100 meters sprint at a time of 9.85 seconds. asafa powel, the present world record holder (9.77sec.) could only muster 9.91 in this race and appeared to have given up with just 15 meters to go. if gay can remain fit he would surely be the favourite for gold in 2008 beijing olympics.
i have been watching a lot of the athletics over this weekend. athletics is my second favourite television sport after cricket. it was so nice to see britain's kelly sutherton to have got a world championship bronze in the heptathlon. i was at the birmingham indoor arena earlier this year when she did really well in the european indoors. on my way to the stadium i had bumped into her and another lesser known british athlete. when i approached them for autographs and a picture, they were just so nice about it. kelly is quite easy on the eye too

Campbell a photo-finisher
Quote:

Campbell a photo-finisher
Afp, Osaka
Jamaica's Veronica Campbell edged American Lauryn Williams in a photo-finish to win the women's world 100 metres title on Monday.
Campbell and Williams clocked an identical 11.01 seconds with the judges taking several minutes to declare the winner, briefly plunging the event into confusion.
Carmelita Jeter claimed bronze for the United States in 11.02 but there was disappointment for her teammate and former world champion Torri Edwards, who finished fourth.
Campbell, the Olympic 200m champion, made up for Jamaica's disappointment on Sunday when world 100m record-holder Asafa Powell was blown away by America's Tyson Gay.
It was a deserved victory for the 25-year-old from Kingston who ran the fastest semi in 10.99 and has the world's best time this year (10.89).
"It was one of my longest waits," she said of the agonising time it took to find out who had won.
"It was a bit confusing because the name was going back and forth but I want to thank God it was me.
"My start wasn't the greatest but I knew that I finished well. It was a very close race. I wasn't sure, it was a tight finish."
Williams was also confused at what was going on...

I saw that one coming from someone, but earlier than this I must admit.

the original thread title was GAY. there were twelve posts by me, all containing different photographs from the championship. so when i finished, there were 12 views, all from my ip address. within an hour the thred had a number of negetive ratings although curiously, the number of views remained twelve! so these people had rated it even withough reading what was inside the thread. a few hours later i noticed that the thread had been renamed TYSON GAY
on sporting matters, this has been an odd championship. usually, the world championship is never as glamorous as the olympics but this year it seemed to have ignited even less passion here.
the women's 100 meter was a really exciting race.

And do you know where Mr. Tyson Gay is from? Arkansas Baby!! U of A, Fayetteville. We also have the front runner for this years Heisman trophy winner McFadden. By the way, in Track and Field Arkansas has won highest championships. In the last 27 years of indoor track and field NCAA tournament Arkansas has won 22 of them. And yes all division one schools have a track team. In the same time span Arkansas has 12 outdoor championship as well.

The Double
TG from AK joins CL and other sensitive beefcakes ...
Quote:
Gay secures sprint double
American Tyson Gay became the third man in history to win the world championship sprint double when he roared to victory in the 200 metres final in Osaka.
Gay flew home in a championship record time of 19.76 seconds four days after his victory in the 100 metres to match the feat of compatriots Maurice Greene in 1999 and Justin Gatlin in 2005.
Jamaica's Usain Bolt finished second in 19.91 and Gay's training partner and compatriot Wallace Spearmon took bronze in 20.05.
It was an eighth race in six days for Gay, but he showed no sign of fatigue or of the hamstring problem that had troubled him in the heats.
After one false start by Spearmon, Gay blasted out of his blocks in the joint quickest time and it was soon clear that it was down to him and the big-striding Bolt in the lane outside him.
There was little between the duo as they rounded the bend but Gay found another gear and powered ahead as the Jamaican faltered in the run home.
"Still tired"
After crossing the line, Gay raised his arm in the air to indicate his now undisputed status in men's sprinting.
"Oh, it feels so great but I am still tired," he said.
Gay could potentially win a third gold medal at Sunday's 400-metre relay.
"I have two golds and I want the third."
Only two men have achieved it at the world championships.
Carl Lewis won three in 1983 and 1987 and Greene in 1999.
"Maurice Greene is one of my idols," Gay said.
Gay's second title gave the United States its sixth gold 13th medal overall.
The victory also made it an even better week for Tyson's coach Lance Brauman, who also coaches women's 100m champion Veronica Campbell and was released on Tuesday after spending more than nine months in a Texas prison for fraud.
Panama power
Meanwhile, Irving Saladino has won Panama's first world championship gold medal in history with victory in the men's long jump.
Saladino won with his final leap of 8.57 metres in Osaka to extend his winning streak to 16 competitions and his 23rd victory in his last 25.
Italy's European champion Andrew Howe was forced to settle for the silver after believing he had done enough to win with his final attempt of 8.47 just minutes earlier.
Olympic champion Dwight Phillips took bronze with a best effort of 8:30, the American falling short in his bid for a third successive world title.
Panama's only previous podium finishes at a major championships were Lloyd LaBeach's two bronze medals in the 100 and 200 metres at the 1948 Olympics in London.

gay seemed less of a beefcake that the other sprinters. i have to admit that i had personally hated the british failure mark lewis-francis. he walks with such an arrogant swagger. for a man who has achieved so little, the arrogance does not make sense!
