Despite all the flaws, I believe Ash should have a place in the best five.

Everyone is so happy for shakib and so they should be but just as an earnst warning dont pounch on him when he has a lean patch because every successful cricketer has one of those.

This is one of the best threads in this moment because Sakib is the best.
Sakib is the best because:
1. He is the best captain, developed excellent team chemistry and a winning mentality, he showed his valour in leading the team when needed, in decision making, batting, bowling and fielding.
2. He is humble without a misleading lip services.
3. He is friendly and his English is better.

Tamim is not overrated. He only needs to work on a few errors and then perhaps we'll get an accomplished opening batsman.

You should also consider our country of origin. We jump to conclusion...we finish things within nine months which might take nine years for others...

These typeof thread needs to stop. All players have their highs and lows. Such extravagant paraise would mean that when the player is low, he'll be kicked.
Be in perspective. Once upon a time Hasibul Hossain was the best bowler Bangl;adesh ever produced.
A year or two ago, Ash was the cricket god of Bangladesh.
If we fans can't learn from the past(in the easy job of being a fan) than how can we expect our players to learn from past?(Playing is way harder than being a connoiseur)

Completely disagree in this perspective.
What Sakib has done in few weeks, most of your 'mega stars' could not do it, on the field, in few years.
We go by our players achievements, what they have already achieved, without any span of time of their achievements, and any future projection.
One 'mega star' wins a game in five years, another under rated player wins two tests in two weeks.
Then why should you wait for the end of their careers for your individual assessment given that we are looking for a point of time assessment, not for a complete sports career assessment?

But mister flame of Spring. Ian's 'megastars' are megastars - Ponting, Haydn, Gilchrist et al.

with due respect to Ian and Dr Z, i believe Ian meant not ask these type of question about any current Bangladeshi player yet. Faguner agun is right in his argument.

Also, Parliament ought to pass a law making it mandatory for every Bangladeshi cricket fan to sing আমার সোনার ময়না পাখি everytime he gets a Shakib.
BTW, you may have followed the North Star but I was the Hershey Bar in his father's back pocket BEFORE Senior met his eventual wife, so there!

Definitely the best ATM, but it would be unfair to say he's the best ever. If Nannu had as good an infrastructure, who knows what height he could have reached.

Well Nannu was, until the later parts of his career, pretty overrated IMO. Not only did he have technical limitations but like many other Bangladeshi batsmen of his time, he was unable to deliver when it mattered, i.e. in international games. There was a time when he had played a good number of ODIs and yet averaged 14.
While it was always a delight watching him in domestic cricket, it wasn't until a year or so before his retirement that he really came good in the international arena, with a couple of 50s in the '99 world cup after piling up a thousand runs in the NCL. As far as ODIs are concerned, I think the likes of Akram, Bulbul and Atahar have done much better than him.
Having said that, you make a good point - he might have excelled given the kind of resources players have access to today.

not sure about 'yet' or 'ever'' but right now, Yes.
Sakib is arguably the best spinner in the world, and probably the finest finger spinner ATM
He has the rare quality of performing under pressure, he may not have the best technique, but makes up for it with grit.

No, not yet. Let me explain.
What Shakib is going through is combination of LUCK and Sheer CONFIDENCE. (Also hard work)
Look, we all know his batting technique leaves a lot to be desired. For example, he played really aggressive 2nd test - 2nd innings, if he got out playing one of those shots, we are the one would be asking for his head. (e.g. Look up the thread, who decided to bat first in second test)
So here is the deal, I hope he can continue improving and keep delivering. Cause end of the, that's all matters... not fluke talent like Ashraful.

According to the latest ICC player rating Shakib tops the list of batsmen, bowers and all rounders, in both format of the game, among the Bangladeshis. He is still the top ODI all rounder in the world.
