This French team is incredibly strong and balanced, and a genuine threat. Technically strong as always at the individual level, they're also tactically on the same page for the first time since 1998. Deschamps has done a great job with these guys.

Besides Benzema, there's also a lot of quality in Pogba, Schneiderlin and Griezmann, technically adept guys who fight for all 90+ minutes. Sagna is in great form in front of Lloris. The way these guys handled a desperate Ecuador with their aggressive zone defense, a physical side very hard to play against, tells me that they're capable of executing well for all 90+ minutes. Throughout the game, they allowed Ecuador players a couple of yards of space when they received the ball, but closed-in rather than back off as soon as they tried to move forward. This forced Ecuador to pass the ball back over and over again to keep possession, and eliminate putting together moves that can create high percentage chances.

Ah the 1990 Wold Cup! Well, that cheating drug fiend Maradona actually admitted to both using performance enhancing drugs and drugging Brazilian players during the match. He admitted to drugging Branco by "sportingly" offering him a drink laced with sedatives during the game. Giusti has too. I'm sure Branco, possibly the heaviest shot in Brazil's history, wasn't the only one. That contributed to Brazil's loss. So a fixed match in 1978 got Brazil out of the final and a drug-fueled handball the 1986 Cup. At least karmic justice has been served since 1990. Great game last night. It was sweet to see Messi score twice and Argentina finally finding some rhythm to their attacking play. Aguero and Hiquain were both yet again disappointing but I really liked the inclusion of Lavezzi who seems to have much more to offer on the flanks. Mascharano was frustrating to watch as he kept on either passing back to the defenders or horizontally without any innovative passes to the 3 forwards to open up the game. It was up to poor Di Maria to basically to go back and bring the ball forward and he was the Robiul Islam of Arg last night. Sabella's decision to remove Messi was strange because Nigeria could have still won the game at that point which would have made Argentina's path to QF much more harder. The sub Alvarez showed a bit of promise. The defenders were poor which is the biggest worry. The first goal was Zabaleta's fault and it seems all of them have difficulties clearing the ball during corner kicks or set pieces. If the defenders do not improve it will be 8-0 vs Germany.
