Default Salauddin's Interview

I have nor done translation in 15 year... no judging please

Mohammad Salauddin

He was an assistant coach of Bangladesh National team for a while. During last worldcup he accepted an offer from Kebangsaan University in Malaysia. He is back in Bangladesh for vacation. We spoke to him about his life in Malaysia, future plans, and Bangladesh cricke.

Q: How is life in Malaysia
A: good, very good. I love to spend time in cricket; was very busy. So wasn't so bad.

Q: What is the nature of your work there?
A: I am part of a project. The university gives scholarship to the most talented cricketers of the country. There are also six cricketers from the Malaysian national team.

Q: What about the cricketing talent ?
A: There is a good number of talents. But the cricket culture is not very deep. So they don't know much. But certainly they are willing to learn. Malay Cricket Association has invested a lot. So cricket is going forward in good pace.

Q: How is your life outside the field?
A: I don't go out too much. If not in the field, I stay mostly in my room. I spend time mostly by reading, surfing the net, and studying about cricket.

Q: How much do you miss Bangladesh?
A. A lot. At times I become home sick and feel lonely. Who likes to live outside his own country? But what can I do, this is my profession. But enjoy every moment on field though.

Q: Do you miss the national team? do you get to follow?
A: I obviously miss the team. I was with the boys for long time. Whenever Bangladesh plays I try not to miss a ball. I observe every single players in fine details. The cricket channels on TV are very expensive there. I haven't got them yet, but will get them soon enough. For the time being I watch cricket over the internet.

Q: BCB President said that in future all foreign coaches will have local assistants. In that case your name should on the top of the list...
A: What is better than working in the country! But to be honest, at this point I got no option. I am under two years of contract with them (Malaysia). They expect me to deliver, I have to honor their faith on me as well. Moreover I took it as a challenge. Not everyone gets a chance to work with development of a new country. If I do well the image of Bangladesh will grow too.

Q: You worked with Jamie for a long time. How was your experience? How do you judge him as a coac?
A: I worked with Jamie and also with Whatmore. I have learned a lot from both of them. Lot of people call me a fielding coach. But I learned a lot about fielding from Jamie. A lot of people do not know that Jamie is extraordinary as a field coach. As his assistant I had total freedom. If you could convince him with logic, you would get his full support. And as a Batting coach I think he is one of the bests in the world. He was fantastic as a human being as well.

Q: You know this team very well. What kind of coach Bangladesh need next?
A: I think we still need a technical coach. A lot of people may argue that man management and working with the mentality (spirit !) is the prime responsibility of the national team coach. But the reality is, we are not there yet. In other countries players get to national team after certain amount of preparation. In our country preparaition happens after you are part of the team. I can speak from my own experience, I had to teach basics like bowling grip or catching position, something in other countries people get to learn in a much younger age. But we do not have such structures in place in grass root. So a technical coach will best suit our need..

What I don't understand in this interview is that Salauddin is allegedly a spin bowling coach. Yet he bowled medium pacers himself. In the interview he says people call him a fielding coach. He also says he was assistant head coach. All these coaching skills are completely different at International level. We have a saying in the USA "jack of all trades and master of none". Has this been Salauddin's problem? Or have people just tried to let him be a variety of positions in the hope he might be able to help in one of them eventually? I heard and read great things about him. So I don't get why he is now in Malaysia, because going to a cricket backwater like Malaysia and then working at a University (not even the national team) seems strange. Also, why JS didn't keep him.

Good questions. I think he was hired as a fielding coach, ended up spending a lot of time working with individual players (bowling and batting - some attribute their successes to him), but the fielding was getting progressively worse, one thing led to the other and the BCB had had enough, fired him and eventually got Julien instead. In a nutshell.

If I remember correctly he was hired as an assistant coach who would also look after fielding. But with a team like ours there are too many things to learn for the kids, and too many areas to work on for coaching staffs.

I am still totally sold on Jamie. The best would have been for us, if we could keep Jamie for another four years with the national team and then give him the job of development. With good enough reward and opportunities to teach to the very young, I think he might have stayed....

I do remember reading somewhere that JS did acknowledge the part that Salauddin had played, however, the BCB wouldn't have it any other way.

He was let go without any consultation with Jamie. Jamie desperately wanted to keep him at least for the duration of the world cup

Reading this interview only reconfirms my belief that BCB got rid off one of the very best coaches for Bangladesh Cricket!

Shabash BCB!!

It is not Siddons' fault that Tamim smokes 40 cigarettes per day.

Hahaha..great answer Baundule bhai. And I think you're not even a fan of Jamie.

Our cricketers, like the majority of the country, expect that someone will tell them what needs to be done, and hold their hands till they get it right. A lot of them would not put in enouhg effort to learn things themselves. Instead of researching on the net and learning about cricket, and maybe even learn English they watch movies and go to dawats like every other Bangali public. They forget they're not like the rest of us. Social life..sure. But they should always have cricket first. G.C. Bose and F.R. Khan did not become the scientific and engineering icons they were by going to dawats or frat parties. They dedicated an extraordinarily amount of time and effort in their field. Just goign to net practice for X hours a week won't cut it. You need to have a purpose for every minute you spend in your profession.

Salahuddin was highly respected by the national team spinners because of the amount he helped them, even though it wasn't really his job. I think it is his desire to work hard that got him where he is, and he will no doubt go very far. He would be an ideal second local candidate to get the national team position in 2020 in addition to Bulbul. If not, he can get it anytime till he retires. Hope he does his level 3 coaching in the next few years, maybe through the university funding. It does not matter that his current role isn't very high profile. Ian Pont coached the Netherlands side c2006. Look where he is now. Good luck Salahuddin bhai.

I think Salauddin makes a very important point that our head coach needs to be a technical coach apart from being a planner/strategist - despite the progress several of our cricketers have made in the last few years.

Salahuddin was instrumental in making Tamim a better batsman before Sid hit the scene.

Salahuddin shud do level 3 coaching training, and some day come back to BD as a head coach maybe.

Salahuddin was a cricket player himself. His playing career was short due to injury. He was the main coach for some Dhaka league teams (like Victoria). He was known for his ability to get the best from young, unknown players. His teams have done quite well in local leagues. I might be wrong but I think he was in BKSP as well. Many of our national players have nothing but praise for Salahuddin.

Malaysia does not have a good cricket team, but I think Malaysia is putting resource into it. Probably Malaysia is trying to create an academy like that in Dubai. Recently four of our ex-players went to Malaysia to do level2 coaching.

I think it is BCB's management issue as it cannot use its whatever meagre resource it has properly. Salahuddin goes to Malaysia. Aminul Islam does not get any feasible offer from BCB. Level 3 coach Nannu is without any team for one year and eventually becomes a selector.
