Default 2 weeks in Europe

If you landed in Amsterdam one day and had two weeks to spare what would you suggest as a probably itinerary? What if you excluded France?

I would recommend spending a couple of days in Amsterdam checking out the canals, Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank House. Take the train down to Hague and spend a day there for touring too. I would then suggest taking the international train down to Brussels in Belgium and have a good two day city tour (atomium, european parliament, grand place etc.).

To fill the rest of your days, I am not so sure as depends on how you want to get around. You could perhaps visit Luxembourg and I believe international train should also go to Berlin

Amsterdam? Zunaid bhai dont tell me that you are the man itself. The man of all men. The indestructable...

I suggest to you Kumar that you should just hang in the coffeeshops... and forget why you even came to Amsterdam in the first place. www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com

Try to visit liden square. Mostly a tourist area. Many bars and pubs. I loved the canal boat cruise. Madame Tussauds museum is also very entertaining.

Enjoy your trip Boss

You guys are a riot.

Anyway - we had two weeks and miles to use up so we decided to spend it in Europe this time. We could get to Amsterdam from JFK with the fewest miles of all other destinations so there you go and that too on business class. After mulling various options - go off to Scandinavia or potter around Germany/Italy we are kind of thinking of France again. I'd have loved to go to the Adriatic coast but travel there will eat up either our time or budget. So it looks like we will be getting EuroRail BENELUX/France passes. Why this early? It's not really early - the longer we wait tickets will become scarce and more expensive.

Current thoughts are leaning towards 10 days in France and 3/4 days in Amsterdam with a stopover in Brugges in Belgium. In France, Paris of course and then looking at the Loire Valley and then Provence, perhaps all the way to Marseilles. Advance tickets are available 3 months in advance and our window just opened. Hence my thread.

Miraz - no UK this time around unless tomorrow we change our plans and decide to Chunnel up.

I have to agree with BK's suggestions. The museums in Amsterdam are amazing, though a tad pricey. But, you might be able to get a family pass. (I pretended to be a Dutch student) With regard to other places to travel, I'd recommend visiting southern Germany in particular, i.e. Munich and Heidelberg. They're pretty easy to get to via Eurorail and are really nice places to visit in the summer. Would understand the temptation of visiting France - but Belgium, why? It's a nice place to stay with friends and chill out but I didn't think it was particularly attractive for tourists, especially those with limited time on their hands.

Also, Boss, didn't your daughter just come back from France? Would she be eager to go again? Maybe it would help her French but when I travel with my parents I usually don't like going back to the same place :p

You don't like going back to the same place? What you gonna do when you are married? Every day and night its the same damn place. Visiting Amsterdam not a bad idea but no family.

Doc, do you even have a permanent address? Seems you spend more time in aisle seats than you probably do on a living room couch. Where can I get your job?

I could do all of Europe in two weeks. But...

A couple of days in Amsterdam/Belgium (Waterloo), then drive through the Alps (highly recommended), Geneva, Zurich, northern Italy (stretch it to the South all the way down to Rome or even Naples if you're feeling adventurous), Munich, Berlin, then back to Amsterdam. If you have the time, you can stretch it further East to Prague and/or Vienna, but might be stretching it too much. Basically, the route above is a gigantic circle enclosing a large chunk of western Europe. You could also connect to Iceland from Amsterdam on the way back and go see the hot springs and volcanoes.

Possibilities in Europe are endless, thanks to open borders and small country sizes.

PS: Life in North America sucks. Life everywhere in Asia except for Singapore sucks. Life everywhere else in the world sucks. Europe (or Singapore) is the place to be.

Perfect. As a family i dont think they would want to visit museums so you can be stoned in the coffeeshops unable to comprehend anything while the family sneak off to bike ride around the whole city. A win win in my books

That's not a bad suggestion - we had been mulling seriously the German alternative. The Iceland idea is great but not this time - (you have very few choices if you are using miles).

Yup - Europe possibilities are endless; we've done some before and we don't have to do it all this trip.

If you are going to Amsterdam, check out the Keukenhof, the Tulip Garden. Its an amazing place. They only open from mid March to mid May. Not too far from Amsterdam.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keukenhof

Drive down to Brugge - small city but its beautiful.

If you are going to be in Amsterdam, I also recommend buying the Amsterdam City Card.
