Default Cricinfo is blowing our innings defeat out of proportion

Another innings defeat for limp Bangladesh

Last Three Years (2009 -11)

BD Played: 14
Innings defeat: 2

India Played: 31
Innings defeat: 4

Australia Played: 33
Innings defeat: 4

South Africa Played: 20
Innings defeat: 2

England Played: 36
Innings defeat: 3

West Indies Played: 28
Innings defeat: 3

I understand that we don't have the greatest winning ratio. But it just hurts to see when team like India/Australia also have the similar innings defeat ratio to make a such a big deal out of it.

Those teams also make up for it by inflicting innings defeat on their opposition, or at least even winning, whereas our team improves by not losing by an innings.

Well said.. However, we did lose to ZImbabwe as well. That is hard to swallow... but seriously, do we see ourselves even winning against any team in the near future? Do we have any bowlers who can actually take 20 wickets and a batsman who can score 200 runs?

3 Pakistannis scored 100 runs and above whereast only 2 Bangldeshis scored 50 plus runs.. the difference is stark and clear. For Bangladesh, it isnt a matter of whether Tamim or Shakib can face the opponents or not its sheer lack of patience,,,, which is actually a Bangladeshi societal thing in general; we are not known to be patient at all and its reflected in the sports we play too..

If you bring our defeat to Zims, I will say remember how mighty India failed to make it to final against Zims and Sri-lanka! It was a one dayer; I understand. But my point is anyone can lose... I just don't want people just to point finger at us.

I get it we are still not winning test matches... but sites like cricinfo has to be fair when they make these kind of statement.

not just that, Cricinfo's current title of the test match, "Another Innings Loss for Bangladesh"
when was the last innings loss? That was last year against England. I think it was the only innings loss last year until yesterday.

Cricinfo is so biased.

I'm sorry to agree with Cricinfo but when you lose almost half of all Test matches by an innings, then they are correct: "Bangladesh crashed to their 35th innings defeat in 73 Tests...."

That does not matter. Here we are looking at the performance of last 2 years to prove that NO, We are not going backwards just from 1 test match.

Getting smoked at home

Reliance ICC Test Ranking

TEAM MATCHES POINTS RATING
1 England 37 4634 125
2 India 41 4846 118
3 South Africa 24 2781 116
4 Australia 37 3815 103
5 Sri Lanka 31 3062 99
6 Pakistan 28 2757 98
7 West Indies 30 2654 88
8 New Zealand 23 1903 83
9 Bangladesh 15 138 9

Last Updated: Mon, Dec 12, 2011

Zimbabwe is currently unranked, as it has played insufficient matches. It has 134 points and a rating of 45, placing them above Bangladesh

I would suggest this ranking PROVES we are going backwards. It places us last from the last series of Test Matches, so is recent history. We are averaging just 9 points a Test match, with Zimbabwe averaging 45. It effectively mean Zimbabwe are ranked as FIVE TIMES better than us in Test matches, with NZ, the next closest, some NINE TIMES better than us!

We are pathetic, let's face it. Let's stop kidding ourselves any more.

NZ yes, they just beat the Aussies, no matter how weak they are, they were at home.

But there is a reason ZIM are unranked. Yes, they're probably better than us atm. And no, all things equal we're probably not much better than them overall. But lets imagine a hypothetical test next month in Dhaka. Bangladesh would probably win, by a hair perhaps. That one win would probably take us above ZIM. Thats why insufficient matches can skew the Test rankings table.

you can't stop critics by screaming louder than them. no one is our enemy. everyone likes to watch a minnow beating a stronger opposition like we like it when Zim & Ire beat big boys. but we lost our biggest fans. we now disgust most cricket lovers. I don't blame critics. we would do the same if we were them.

Not true at all. We would have to get something like 700 or more points to average more than Zimbabwe due to the poor results we have had. This is the entire point of rankings tables. This would require 4 or 5 Test match wins over them, and when we are home the points are lower because we ought to win.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICC_Test_Championship

This means we'd have to beat NZ about 8 times in a row in Tests.

We are such a long way behind and one win or so isn't going to cut it.

it's not CricInfo, the ICC or anyone else doing this to our team. It's our own players, coaches and management.

yes the world is not a happy go lucky ground. In real world, you don't perform you get penalized or criticized and yes sometimes more than you deserve. If what they are saying isn't true 100 percent, it may be 95 percent so what ? we should have and should always respond with performance. Thanks to our ineptness, we just don't help ourselves.

you don't understand the way the calculations are done. to my understanding, this is a rough estimate of how its done based on the wiki link:

Lets say we play a series with ZIM at home next month and win the 2 match series 1-0.

ZIM has a rating of 45 from 3 matches, so they have 135 points.

So we would earn 50 points + ZIM's rating (45) = 95 points. and multiply by 1.5 (1 point for a win, 1/2 point for a draw) = 142.5 points.

Our rating would thus go from the curren 9 to 16.5.

ZIM's rating would be thus:

(1.5) * (-41) = -61.5

134 + (-61.5) = 72.5/5 tests played by ZIM = 14.5

*************

Thus merely beaten ZIM 1-0 in a 2 match series is enough for us to surpass them in rating. This is why ZIM is off the chart because they have played too few matches where one result can skew their ratings. My guess is once they have played 10 matches they'll be back on teh chart in whatever position they have at that point.

Also, ICC rankints don't incorporate home/away factors, AFAIK. In fact, I have devised my own rankings system which is quite a bit more comprehensive than the ICC's current system. It not only factors in home/away issues, but also takes into consideration the margins of victory as well as differentiating between dead and live rubbers.

I just haven't had the time to plug all the numbers in yet.

the bowling unit is in dire straights, with the batting at least we have a couple of reasonably consistent batsmen in tamim and shakib and mushy is quite consistent these days plus nasir looks to be on the up.

but we really don't have the fire power to take 20 wickets. rubel hasn't come through in the test format like he has in the one-day format, we desperately need a couple of good pacers to compliment shakib and sunny.

Pacers are like pichers in Baseball. They cant bowl well everyday, they need break.
We need a seperate Test Team Bowling Unit.

seperate team bowling unit? not sure what you mean? but what you say is true about fast bowlers. need to develop probably 7-8 good fast bowlers so if some are injured or out of form the others are there and can do the job.

as far as spin goes they should develop nasir's offies, he bowls some magical balls.

^ Sorry I meant Test Team Bowling Unit. Ideally we should have a reserve of 5 pacers and 3 spin specialist Bowlers as backups for Test Team.

The other teams you have mentioned all are actually pretty good at their home grounds and managed to pull victories, how many test has Bangladesh won? Let alone drawn one? The record is

I think the rating is not so much important right now, what is important the way we are playing our matches. Players are making same kind of mistakes again and again. They are not learning a bit. Bowlers are bowling short and wide, Fielders are missing catches (not even half chances, full chances also) I don't want to talk about the batsman furthermore, everybody know's why. If there is a reflection that we are learing and improving bur slowly, I think none of us will mind, but the question is where and how we are learing ?? and there is no refelction of that.
