BD-SL ODI Series March 2013 Report Card
BD-SL ODI Series March 2013 Scorecard
Players who have played at least two matches are considered. This rules out Tamim Iqbal, Shahdat Hossain and Abul Hassan. Also ruled out are Jahurul Islam and Mominul Haque since they didn’t get to bat in the washed out 2nd ODI.
Nasir Hossain
Best performer for Bd in the series. His innings in the 1st ODI was just awe inspiring, despite bd being on the losing side. And he carried his team through in the 3rd ODI, as well as his excellent reputation undoubtedly. Was magnificent in the field. There were a few doubts after seeing his first 4 matches of the WI series, but he has picked up where he left off in that 5th match. Brilliant.
Grade: A+
Rubel Hossain
Unfortunately for Rubel, slightly better than Abul is not a complement. Horrendously expensive in the 1st game, and even in the 2nd game before it was washed out. Zero accuracy with the ball, and worse still, a total inability to adapt to the pitch. Either the SL opening pair is the best in the world, or this Bd pacer is the worst in the world. And even if it’s half and half, again, it is not a complement to Rubel. Desperately needs to reevaluate himself.
Grade: F
Anamul Haque
Looked in great touch in the 1st ODI before being bamboozled by Kulusakera delivery. But learned from it and delivered a solid 40 in the 3rd ODI. I like his look of concern after he gets out. Maybe just dramatics, but he seems to care deeply and already bats with the more responsibility than 90% of the Bd openers ever to lace gloves up. Great showing in the field too.
Grade: B+
Mohammad Ashraful
He is supposed to very experienced. So not much to take away from any hints of technique, body language, etc. It is best to judge him purely on his scores. And he hasn’t done all that well. A duck in the 1st ODI but an important 29 in the 3rd ODI. But even looking at those numbers, you can tell how Anamul is turning out to be they type of batsmen he could never be, having bigger scores in both matches.
Grade: C -
Mushfiqur Rahim
Disappeared with the bat, first with a rush of blood, and then in the 3rd ODI, with a bit of foolishness. He didn’t even make a dive to make up for the misjudged run. Dropped a catch in the short lived 2nd ODI . As the captain, the fans always will want blame any strategic errors on one man, and that seems a bit fair. He did a lot of things well, such as rotating his bowlers well especially under extreme pressure in that 3rd ODI and setting good fields. Again giving your “supposed” strike bowlers the ball in the end can hardly be blamed on him.
Grade: C-
Abdur Razzak
Was drab in the 1st ODI, but spectacular in the 3rd ODI. Economy rate alone can’t be considered as virtually every bowler from both sides got hammered in what was a clearly batting friendly pitch. He really reigned in the SL batsmen, and its’ as much to his credit as it is Nas’s that Bd won that match. Absolutely killed the SL middle order and tail in that 3rd ODI.
Grade: A-
Shohag Gazi
Gazi slipped a notch in this series, no doubt it. While every other bowler was expensive , you would expect a hitherto star performer like Gazi to stand out amongst them with either a a great economy rate or if not, then a bag of wickets. He did neither. But still in the context of the whole series where the bar of bowling was mediocre, he did enough. Still posed some threat when coming to bowl, not his series perhaps.
Grade: B-
Ziaur Rahman
Stepped up when the team had a lack of competent fast bowling and delivered to some extent. His economy rate in that 1st ODI now looks remarkable in the context of the whole series. But there is a huge question mark in his batting abilities. Seems clueless with two ducks, one of them golden and another one a ball away from being golden. And that weighs his grade down to a great extent.
Grade: C-
Mahmadullah Riyad
Was wayward with his batting. But again, his 29 in the 1st ODI has to be considered as useful as Ashraful’s 29 in the 3rd ODI. The bowlers just couldn’t do the job in that 1st ODI. Speaking of bowling, he actually chipped in quite beautifully in that 3rd ODI, and credit cannot be taken away. All the extra criticism of the fans has to come with the territory of being a VC. Otherwise, the people’s reaction is inexplicable, as he cannot even be considered the worst batsmen in team in the series. Has lots of issues, but did enough.
Grade: C+

I will give Anamul a C+. More was expected from him. Also, our VC Riyad doesn't deserve a C+ since his performance was almost F worthy. However, because of his bowling in the 3rd ODI, he deserves a D+. Where is Momiul in your list?

You really believe that? Then Mushy and Ash should also get Fs by your standard.

I always see foreign tours differently. Hostile conditions, unfamiliar surroundings, adjustment to weather are somethings to consider. Therefore I would look at: If the tour average is greater than the career average they did good, deserves a good grade.
Test (Batting):
Tamim: 37.57 avg, tour avg 34.5. Close enough to get an average grade C.
Anamul: Debut with 7 avg. Bad F.
Jaharul: 28.44 avg, tour avg 47.33. Great improvement. A. Not very many people would have an avg of 47 in away matches.
Ashraful: 22.63 avg, tour avg 77.33. A See above.
Mominul: Debut with 52 avg. Excellent work. A. May you keep up this performance.
Mushi: 31.62 avg, tour avg 82.33. A. That 200 innings has pulled him up in to 30s for the first time.
Riyad: 29 avg, tour avg 2.66. F Poor form has taken is avg below 30 for the first time in his career.
Nasir: 44.28 avg, tour avg 49.33. A. Keeping an high average intact in an away tour. Plus his maiden century.
Sohag: 15.57 avg, tour avg 26.33. good improvement. B+.
Test (Bowling): With the batting pitch they prepared
Shahadat: 51.9 avg, SR 74. Tour: 128 avg, SR 180. Dreadful stats. F.
Abul: 123.66 avg, SR 176. Tour: 86 avg, SR 128. Improving C+.
Rubel: 74.69 avg, SR 111.3. Tour: 30 avg, SR 60. Much better B.
Robiul: 56.62 avg, SR 87. Tour: 23.5 avg, SR 39. Excellent stats. Very well done in a hostile condition. A.
Fast bowlers have done well overall if you see SLan's fast bowlers stats. Lakmal-Mathew went wicketless.
Sohag: 40.73 avg, SR 77.6. Tour: 54.28 avg, SR 100. C.
Ellias Sunny: Went unlucky with several drops. Wicketless so F.
Riyad: 44.14 avg, SR 77. Tour: 41 avg, SR 68. Improvement so B-.
If I have time I will do the ODIs later on.
