I think this is one of the reason why Ash, alok, Aftab, Tushar, Nafees Iqbal and all the others fading away. They didn't get what the new generation getting. While it's true old generations didn't have access to resuorces as much as the new generationds do but that logic does not apply to Ash. He does not lack in technique or the number of shots which I must say is a credit to him. What he lacks is temperament or the processing ability of which shot to play. Even lesser batsmen with inferior technique are doing well on a consistent basis in our team, aka Imrul Kayes.

২০০১ এশিয়ান টেস্ট চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপে মুলতানে পাকিস্তানের বিপক্ষে খেলা। টেস্ট ক্রিকেটে আমাদের এক বছরও পূর্ণ হয়নি। আমরা তখন টেস্ট মহাসাগরের অথই জলে। ওই ম্যাচে আমাদের দ্বাদশ খেলোয়াড় ছিল আশরাফুল।
মনে আছে, ইনিংস ব্যবধানে ম্যাচ-ট্যাচ হেরে আমাদের সবার মুখ ভার। কিন্তু আশরাফুল অটোগ্রাফ খাতা নিয়ে ছোটাছুটি করছে। যেন সে জাতীয় দলের স্কোয়াডে থাকা কোনো খেলোয়াড় নয়, অটোগ্রাফশিকারি এক কিশোর। ইনজামামেরও তা-ই মনে হয়েছিল বলে ও আমাদের জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিল, ‘ইয়ে ছোটু কৌন হ্যায়!’

নিজের পরিচয় আশরাফুল দিয়েছিল চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপেরই পরের ম্যাচে, শ্রীলঙ্কার বিপক্ষে। টেস্ট ক্রিকেটে সর্বকনিষ্ঠ সেঞ্চুরির রেকর্ড গড়ে। সেরা ফর্মে থাকা ভাস-মুরালিদের এত অবলীলায় খেলছিল, মনেই হয়নি ওর বয়স মাত্র ১৭!
ওই ইনিংস নিয়ে অনেক কথা হয়েছে। নতুন কিছু বলতে চাই না। তবে এত দিন পর পেছন ফিরে তাকিয়ে একটা উপলব্ধি হচ্ছে আমার। ওই সেঞ্চুরির কারণে মাত্র ১৭ বছরের একটা ছেলের ওপর কি পুরো জাতির প্রত্যাশার ভার অজান্তেই চাপিয়ে দিয়েছিলাম আমরা!

আমাদের একের পর এক ব্যর্থতা, সাফল্যের তৃষ্ণায় অস্থির হয়ে ওঠার মাশুল কি আশরাফুলকে গুনতে হয়নি? একসময় আমরা ঠাট্টা করেই বলতাম, আশরাফুলকে ‘আলু’ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে। মাছে আছে, মাংসে আছে, সাধারণ সবজিতেও। আশরাফুল টেস্ট খেলো। আশরাফুল ওয়ানডে। পরের সপ্তাহে ছুটে যাও অনূর্ধ্ব-১৯ বিশ্বকাপ খেলতে। ‘এ’ দলের সফর আছে, আশরাফুল চলে এসো। আবার জাতীয় দল...।

চোখের সামনেই একটা ছেলের কৈশোর হারিয়ে যেতে দেখলাম। স্কুল জীবনটা ঠিকমতো উপভোগই করতে পারেনি, কলেজ জীবনের প্রশ্নই আসে না। ছেলে সন্ধ্যার আগে বাড়ি ফিরছে কি ফিরছে না নিয়ে যখন মা-বাবা উদ্বিগ্ন থাকবেন, সেই বয়সে প্রতিদিন, ফিকে হয়ে আসা বিকেলের আলোতে আশরাফুল ভারী কফিন ঠেলে বেরোচ্ছে নেট থেকে।
বাংলাদেশের মানুষ আশরাফুলকে ভীষণ ভালোবাসে। আবার উল্টোটাও সত্যি। একদিন ওর নামে জয়ধ্বনি দিয়ে মিছিল বেরোয়, আরেক দিন চলে মুণ্ডপাত। এই করে কেটে গেল ওর ক্যারিয়ারের ১০ বছর। শুরুতে সম্ভাবনার যে সূর্য উঁকি দিয়েছিল, মাঝেমধ্যেই তা হারিয়ে গেছে হতাশার মেঘে। কিন্তু এখনো বলব, আশরাফুল আমাদের সেরা ব্যাটসম্যান। ও ধারাবাহিক নয়, অবশ্যই ওটা ওর ব্যর্থতা। কিন্তু অধারাবাহিকতার সময়টায় ওকে আরও বেশি চাপে ফেলে দেওয়াটাও যে আমাদের কারও কারও অভ্যাস হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে, সেটার কী হবে?

পরপর দুটি ওয়ানডেতে শূন্য মেরে একজন ব্যাটসম্যানের ক্যারিয়ার শুরু, প্রথম ১২ ম্যাচে মাত্র একটি ফিফটি...এমন ব্যাটসম্যান আমাদের দেশে হলে শুরুতেই হয়তো বাদ পড়ে যেত দল থেকে। ভাগ্য ভালো ভারতের তখনকার নির্বাচকেরা সেটি করেননি। হয়তো সে কারণেই শচীন টেন্ডুলকার আজকের টেন্ডুলকার!

স্বাভাবিকভাবেই আশরাফুলের ব্যাপারে আমার ব্যক্তিগত কিছু আবেগ জড়িয়ে আছে। থাকবে না কেন? বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটের সাফল্যের অধ্যায়গুলোর দিকে যখন পেছন ফিরে তাকাই, বেশির ভাগ সময়ই একটা নামই তো ভেসে আসে—আশরাফুল!

এবার বিশ্বকাপের আগে এমন খবরও পড়েছি, আশরাফুলকে নাকি বাদ দেওয়ার পরিকল্পনা চলছিল। আশ্চর্য! আবারও ওকে সেই চাপের মুখেই ঠেলে দিলাম আমরা। অথচ আশরাফুলকে ‘আশরাফুলের’ মতো খেলতে দিতে চাইলে ওকে সবকিছু উপভোগ করতে দিতে হবে। যেমন উপভোগ সে করছিল ২০০৫ ন্যাটওয়েস্ট সিরিজে।

আমার দেখা সেরা ধারাবাহিকতায় আছে আশরাফুল। জাতীয় লিগ, এরপর প্রিমিয়ার লিগ—সবখানেই ও ধারাবাহিক। অথচ সেই সময় ওকে বিশ্বকাপের দলে নেওয়া হবে কি না, সেটা নিয়ে আলোচনা। অথচ আমাদের এই দলে অভিজ্ঞতা বিবেচনায় আশরাফুলের ‘অটোমেটিক চয়েস’ হওয়ার কথা।

আশরাফুলের ব্যর্থতা কি আমি আড়াল করার চেষ্টা করছি? একদমই না। ওর সমালোচনা আমিও করি। ওকে অনেকবার অনেক কিছু বলেছিও। এখনো বলব, আশরাফুলের মূল সমস্যা, ও হয়তো খুব আক্রমণাত্মক খেলে নয়তো খুবই রক্ষণাত্মক। এর মাঝামাঝি খেলাটাই খেলতে হবে। তবে সবাইকে সমালোচনা করার ব্যাপারে একটু সংযত হওয়ার অনুরোধও জানাই।

ক্রিকেটবোদ্ধারা বলেন, একজন ব্যাটসম্যানের সেরা সময় শুরু হয় ২৬-২৭ বছর বয়স থেকে। আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটের দিকে তাকালেই বুঝবেন কথাটা কতটা সত্যি। আমার মনে হয়, আশরাফুলের সেই সময়টা চলে এসেছে। ওর জন্য সবচেয়ে সুবিধার দিকটা হলো, এখন আর সেই চাপটা একা বইতে হয় না। এই দলে অনেক ম্যাচ উইনার আছে।
গত বিশ্বকাপের সঙ্গে এই বিশ্বকাপের একটা মিল খুঁজে পাচ্ছি। ওইবারও ওকে নিয়ে আলোচনা-সমালোচনা হচ্ছিল। কিন্তু বিশ্বকাপের প্রস্তুতি ম্যাচগুলোতেই বুঝতে পারছিলাম, বিশ্বকাপে ও দারুণ কিছু করবে। এবার বিশ্বকাপেও আমি সেই পূর্বাভাস পাচ্ছি। গত বিশ্বকাপে ও পাঁচ-ছয়-সাতে ব্যাটিং করেছে। সাত দিয়ে শুরু করে পরে পাঁচেই বেশি খেলেছে। তবে আমি মনে করি, আশরাফুলের জন্য সবচেয়ে ভালো চার নম্বরে খেলা।

এখন দূর থেকে তাকালে দেখি, ওর জীবনে আসলে ক্রিকেট ছাড়া কিছুই নেই। এটা এক দিক দিয়ে খারাপও। মাঝেমধ্যে ক্রিকেট কিছুক্ষণের জন্য হলেও দূরে সরে গিয়ে জীবনটা উপভোগ করাও দরকার।
বিশ্বকাপের জন্য বিশেষ কিছু বললাম না, কারণ বড় মঞ্চ মানেই যে ওর জ্বলে ওঠা; সেটা তো আমরা জানিই।

why captain? It's good for resume, specially when you are presenting it to prospective in-laws.

why pressure? What pressure? What he needs to do is just "cheer-up the team" with his unique (dancing) moves, rest will be done by the young players.

why can't we let him play normal game? How can we? Remember, he is getting married. Life will not be the same anymore, no more fooling around ... neither with the girls nor with the team.

What pressure? He is leading the A side not the senior side into the WC. And for playing his normal game? Why would anyone want him to play his 'normal' game, the game that has allowed a top order batsman to play 150+ matches, and still only average in the low 20s.

Maybe it is better he doesn't play his 'normal' game, mind you personally I feel he should give up pretending to be a professional cricketer.
