Default Citycell Federation Cup Football!!

After few weeks qualifying round- today the draw for the final round of the season's curtain-raising football tournament held at a local Dhaka hotel.

The sixteen teams split into four groups-

Group A – Muktijoddha Sangsad, Farashganj SC, Khulna Abahani and Dhaka Wanderers
Group B – Abahani Limited, Ctg Mohammedan, Ctg Abahani KC and Jatrabari KC
Group C – Sheikh Russel KC, Brothers Union, Victoria SC and BSKP
Group D – Dhaka Mohammedan, Arambagh KS, Rahmatganj MFS and Sunrise SC

Top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals.

Archrivals Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club will not face each other unless they progress to the semifinals, with the old foes drawn into separate groups for the finals.

B. League champions Abahani take on Jatrabari KC in the inaugural match Wednesday (Aug 6) with BFF president Kazi Shalahuddin declaring the 16-team finals open.

mohiul - I was expecting your post in this lonely thread!! thanks

I'm hopefull with our football after KS (Kazi Salahuddin) became the President of BFF few months ago. IMO He is the only person who can take BD footbal beyond SAF level.

and yes, I'm looking forward to this fedaration cup, might go to few Abahani matches also!

Citycell Fedaration Cup'08
Abahani face early heat
Source- Daily Star

Abahani has been placed in a slightly tough group when a draw for the final round of the Citycell Federation Cup was held at a local hotel yesterday.

The giants from Dhaka were included in group B along with two B. League teams Chittagong's Mohammedan and Abahani, while Jatrabari Krira Chakra is the other team.

Their traditional rivals Mohammedan were pitted in group D along with Arambagh Krira Sangha, Rahmatganj and Sunrise Sporting Club while the other Dhaka giants Brothers Union and Sheikh Russel were in group C with Victoria Sporting Club and BKSP.

Muktijoddha are in group A with Farashganj Sporting Club, Khulna Abahani and Dhaka Wanderers.

The final round of the season's curtain-raiser tournament will kick off on August 6 with Abahani taking on Jatrabari Krira Chakra in the opening game at the Bangabandhu National Stadium at 5pm. After the inaugural game there will be two matches everyday in the fixture.

A draw for the eleven B. League teams who got direct entries and five qualifiers, was held at a local hotel where top four teams of the inaugural B. League -- Abahani, Mohammedan, Muktijoddha and Russel -- were chosen to head the groups.

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) didn't consider the last Federation Cup outcomes as it was held almost three years back where Brothers Union became champions and Muktijoddha were runners-up.

Top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals.

Famed television star Sadia Islam Mou and her celebrated actor husband Jahid Hasan were the main attractions in the ceremonial draw and they picked the tokens of the first two clubs, Muktijoddha and Abahani, to lead group A and B respectively.

Captain of Swadhin Bangla football team Zakaria Pintoo and star booter cum hockey player Pratap Sankar Hazra picked up the tokens for Sheikh Russel and Mohammedan to lead group C and D respectively.

Long serving national custodian Shahidur Rahman Shantu, Sultan Ahmed, Shahiduddin Ahmed Selim, Mosabbir Hossain, Kazi Jashimuddin Joshi, Elias Hossain, Mohammad Kaikobad, Bashir Ahmed, Kaiser Hamid, Abu Yousuf, Shafiqul Islam Manik and Ajmat Ali also drew the tokens of participating clubs.

"We have started to fulfill our commitment which we made before election that we want to take the game to the field," said BFF senior vice-president Salam Murshedi during the brief draw ceremony.

"We know that expectations are high on this committee led by Kazi Salahuddin and we are very focused on our job," added the former international.

This will be Mohamedan's excuse when they will come second to Abahani.

Just came back from Abahani match (watched a football match @BNS after 8 years!!). They outplayed qualifying round champion Jatrabari KC by 4-0 in their opening Group B match. Ujjal missed a penalty in 5th minute but then he scored the lone goal at the last part of 1st half. In 2nd half Abahani played lot better and Emily scored the second goal at start of this half. Later foreign recruit (#12) scored twice and earned 3 valuable points in season opening match for Abahani.
Few thousand die hard Abahani fans watch this one sided match!!

Citycell Federation Cup'08
BKSP shock Russel

Sports Reporter

DAVID TRIUMPHS OVER GOLIATH: Sheikh Russel's Moroccan recruit Youness (L) tussles for the ball with BKSP defender Russell during their Citycell Federation Cup match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday. Photo: STAR

BKSP pulled off the season's first upset when they handed a 1-0 defeat to big-spending Sheikh Russel in the Citycell Federation Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

Tawhidul Alam Sabuj was the hero of the match as his spectacular right-footer on the top of the box in the 29th minute stunned the star-studded Russel and saw the sports institute boys celebrate like champions after the match was over in front of a small crowd in the Big Bowl.

Abahani beat S.Russel 2-0. They will play vs Farashganj in SF.
Mohammedan need to wait until tomorrow to get their opponent in SF (Ctg.Mohameddan vs BKSP).
