Default Bangladesh justify ICC faith, says Speed

Bangladesh justify ICC faith, says Speed

ST JOHN'S, Antigua, April 8, 2007 (AFP) - ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed insisted on Sunday that the governing body had been right to stand by Bangladesh when many feared the Asian side were out of their depth.

Speed praised the progress made by Bangladesh who have defeated India and South Africa at this World Cup.

"We've been criticised for many years for including Bangladesh at the top table of world cricket. What they've done in the last couple of weeks is to justify their existence here," said the ICC chief.

Ireland, a non-Test nation, also beat Pakistan in the group phase - a result that effectively knocked the 1992 champions out of the tournament and Speed added: "I've said on many occasions that the commercial powerhouse for cricket is India and Pakistan.

"India and Pakistan haven't made it through to the final eight here. If we go back to the 1999 World Cup (hosts) England didn't make it through to the final six and in 2003 (hosts) South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan and England all failed to make the last six.

"These things happen. From a commercial perspective there are some negatives there but if you lose matches you go home."

And they (Indians and Pakistanis) critisized the format of the game. In 2003, four of the top eight team didn't make it. In 2007, only two didn't make it. Which is the better format? Is there any job application to be a rocket scientist?

although four teams were out before super six,all played six matches atleast.but in this wc,india and pakistan played only three matches, where they were expecting a long tour.so,it has hurt them more.but for me,this format is better for now.better than super six thought.

Personally I DON'T like the 2007 format. this format is got to few games... Not every year we will be able to get into Pak/Ind group to beat them u know????its better to have 6/7 matches at least in the WC

This was a format to specifically favour the top ranking teams. Idea was, to give the Minnows (??) 2/3 games against the big teams and then have a grand tournament with 8 big teams. That's what is happenning though.

In champions trophy, Top six teams did not play in the prelim round at all.

These were the reflection of ideas of the commercial power house. Boards like Aus & NZ have never dis regarded So called Minnows.

Now the power houses are echoing another tone; "it's not fair that you go out for loosing one match" -- "If you make a ditch for others, you will fall in that" I probably couldn't give the appropriate english of the Bangla proverb.

Who cares about seasonal statements, We all shared the pain of our defeats, time to enjoy paying back on the field.

Next WC we expect more innovative and realistic structure, playing 3 matches to go to super8/quarterfinal is not good idea for cricket.
