Sort of ironic that most everyone seems to agree with the theme of this thread that height is no big deal, but then the rest of the posts are debating how tall the players actually are.

A handful of legends from countries and eras doesn't mean height or bouncers were necessarily their obstacle, but it didn't affect them and therefore it doesn't matter. Clearly they used their talent to the full extent, but height is always helpful. Also I wouldn't call 5'8 short, not everyone is 6 feet tall. It just doesn't compare to the shorty Tendulkar is.

Our short batsmen clearly struggle to reach a lot of bouncers, but we've seen players like Ashraful pull the best bowlers out of the park. He is also dubbed our most talented batsmen, so it's not so much to do with height or strictly ability, but the really gifted players find a way around it. Not all players are like that, and it doesn't help when you are short too.

height is not a factor.. i mean if ur tall it always comes in handy.. but lest remember that all the greatest batsmens in the world are short!!!

If you check the last picture.. u will see Saqib is standing straight. He is nothing more than 5'6 to 5'7. End of story. By the way who was the shortest player to ever play cricket? or for that matter any sports? I think our Mushy can very well be the one.. he looks like 4'10 to 4'11... Correct me if i am wrong. And if he is over 18.. then he ain't growing nomore.

Don't count on the pictures. Shakib is same height as Tamim which is around 5'10-5'11.

Anyways, on the thread topic, as many has said height is really not a factor for batsmen but it is useful for bowlers specially fast bowlers to generate good bounce. Infact, height is even useful for spin bowlers to generate bounce - Enamul Jnr and Razzak are good example of it.

Actualy to tell u the truth.. with Bangali players.. u don't know what the truth is .. We not even sure their correct ages. They lie bout heights everywhere, not only BD.. Check America for instance.. Nate Robinson(knicks)<--this guy dunks... despite being 5'7 inch tall.. But he reported his height as 5'9.. which everyone knows is not true. Allen Iverson 5'10(frm 76ers now Nuggets) he claims to be 6'ft. So.. I am pretty sure all our BD players exeggerated a lit bit bout their heights too..

There is no claming game in players height in BD cricket. They are all measured. Further, the age thing has been fixed for quite a while as far I am informed.

But yea to your point, few members in this thread could be exaggerating.

The comparison is not fair. Have you ever done a physical? Here Doctors measure with your snickers on. That makes the 5'11" iverson as 6'1". And nate to his disclosed height. They are not like boxers who are striped naked (almost) and weighted and height measured. Why would you not believe those who have met them just recently and shook hands?

By the way, Sharif's height is a mistake at Cricinfo. We had another Sharif who was 6 ft. Just a mixup.

Sly,
I haven't seen you so who knows how tall you are. May be when you have met Sakib he was in his barontho age. However, I would take the word for Billah bhai and others any day who just met them few months back.

In bowling hight may be a factor......but still looking at Vaas or Malcom Marshall (the legend) i am not sure.

In case of batting, i rather say shorter the better. More balance and better eye-hand combination. Do i need to give any example? Bradman to Tendulkar; Rohan Kanhai to Ricy Ponting or Boycott to Arbind de Silva and last but not least Brian Lara. Need more?
