Sports Psychology

I think that the BD team is in desperate need of a sports psychologist. They have plenty of talent, and I'm sure the coaches are trying their best to teach the mental aspects of cricket to them, but I feel that they suffer from many complexes that drive them to play the way they do. It seems to me the predominant feeling amongst players is fear -- fear of losing, fear of being dropped, fear of the opposition's superiority...

This issue was raised by Miraz in the thread about Tushar Imran , but I feel it deserves some prominence. What is everyone's thought on this?

there is little talent and much talk. the basics, as in learning to bat and bowl properly should be concentrated on first. in ten years time if they are still languishing in the bottom of icc tables money should be wasted on other training.

i voted no because i can see the lack of talent in the team rather easily. it's not rocket science. they continue to lose, they continue to be uncompetitive, they have never won consistently. it is a lack of talent than anything else.

The kinesthetic approach is always better when it comes to physical culture including cricket and martial arts. Carefully crafted visual and auditory support can and usually does strengthen quality of the activity performed. In cricket, a shrink, coach or a motivator can provide that auditory support once the basics are mastered through cultivation of quality though managed repetition. Once talent - meaning those with the fundamental skills and attributes necessary to perform particular tasks such as batting, bowling, fielding and wicket keeping - are spotted through a transparent and SMART meaning Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-phased assessment process, the most important thing that cricketer can do is play a lot of cricket to prepare for the highest level. Just playing a lot can make him/her more receptive to visual, meaning video analysis, as well as auditory, meaning coaching, psychological and motivational support that can improve his/her technique and prepare the cricketer better for the highest level by setting him up for success.

That said, let me play the broken record yet again. Until we re-format and re-vamp our domestic FC cricket to play more quality domestic cricket, and create a transparent, reasonable system of talent assessment and development standards - the revolving door, jodi laigga jay type of arbitrary selections won't help as they have not to date. Russian roulette is always fatal in the end. You can only harness those bolod instincts and stay in the middle, only by playing enough quality FC and List-A cricket on a variety of pitches. Professional coaches, talent scouts, state of the art facilities can make them better once the basics are cultivated through regular and managed engagement that includes "active rest" and rotation in order to time and deliver optimum performance.

Facts: We suck despite having talent in both forms of the game. We have yet to put together back-to-back victories in the shorter version, and have no wins in the real version against the top 8. A depleted Zimbabwe and aging, over the hill Kenya give us illusions and a false, ultimately self-defeating sense of security we tend to stew a bit too much in. Our performances have clearly demonstrated that the status quo of Bangladeshi cricket, both in terms of real infrastructure and management in all levels, do not adequately prepare us for this level. The status quo needs to be rejected in favor of a more reasonable approach based on the best practices of countries like Sri Lanka.
