SAFF Women's Football Championship 2010
Hosts start well
India put 18 past Bhutan Bangladesh got their SAFF Women's Football Championship campaign off to a comfortable start with a 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka in their Group A encounter at the Cox's Bazaar Zilla Stadium yesterday. Meanwhile, favourites India got off to a rollicking start after they put an unbelievable eighteen unanswered goals past a hapless Bhutan side in the day's first game. For Bangladesh, a first half strike by Suinu Pru Marma, doubled by Sabina Khatun in the second half meant the scoreline from the SA Games earlier this year was repeated in the seaside city. The match got off to an explosive start as striker Suinu scored an astounding goal even before the crowd had settled into their seats. Collecting the ball from midfield, she unleashed a left footer from twenty yards out that eluded the keeper's hands and nestled into the top corner of the net. Minutes later, Suinu once again created havoc in the Sri Lanka defence when she cut back from the right wing, danced past a defender before releasing a cross that was all too difficult for the Lankan keeper, the fumbled fist was headed back by Aung Mrachin but eventually cleared off the line by the defence. Bangladesh created a few more chances in the first half, but could not increase the lead. The second half saw Sri Lanka press harder while Bangladesh seemed to sit back a little. Just after the restart, Lankans came close to reducing the margin as Erandi Kamudamala's diving header missed the top of the bar by a whisker. Bangladesh defence came under severe pressure and a 65th-minute attack was barely foiled at the death by the tall and agile custodian Sabina Akter. However, somewhat against the run of play Bangladesh scored again on the 71st minute through Sabina Khatun. It originated from a counterattack as Sabina took the ball on her own from inside her own half, danced past a defender, cut back inside another, took the ball on the right foot before sliding it in under the diving goalkeeper. The rest of the game was dominated by Bangladesh although the scoreline remained unchanged. The winners were given a huge ovation by the 10,000-strong when they went on a victory lap. Captain Trishna Chakma said they were confident about winning the game: “We beat them [Sri Lanka] in the SA Games, so we were confident of winning here too. Everyone did their job. We are happy to start with a win in the month of victory.” The coach Golam Rabbani Choton said the team played well for most of the game apart from a period in the second half when they got themselves under a bit of pressure. “This is a tough group and this was a very important match. We had no alternative but to win, which we accomplished. We always played with attacking intent and hopefully we will win our next matches as well,” said Choton. The Sri Lankan coach Chaminda Neil blamed injury to two of his most important players during the game for defeat. Meanwhile, favourites India humiliated minnows Bhutan with a staggering 18-0 defeat in the first match of the day. The winners added eight goals after going for breather with a 10-0 scoreline. Sasmita Malik scored an amazing seven goals, Bala Devi bagged five and captain Tababi Devi four while Gayatri Mallick and Pinky Bompal added one each for the winners. There are two matches to be played today, in the first match Pakistan will take on Maldives while favourites Nepal will play against Afghanistan in the later match. Hosts take on Bhutan today
Hosts Bangladesh will meet minnows Bhutan in their second match of the SAFF Women's Football Champion-ship at the Cox's Bazar Zilla Stadium today. Having beaten Sri Lanka 2-0 in their opening match, Bangladesh will breathe easy about a semifinal berth if they beat Bhutan today. The odds are highly in favour of the hosts after they beat the same team by 7-0 in a warm-up match in Dhaka last week. However, Bangladesh are not complacent and looking to extending their goal difference in the game. Head coach Golam Rabbani Choton wants to make sure of the semis with a high goal advantage going into the match against India. “Goal difference might come handy, so we are looking for a big win. But first we need to make sure that we win,” said Choton. “Our captain Trishna Chakma has a bit of an injury, but she is expected to recover in time for the match.” The Bhutanese, on the other hand, would want to leave behind the memory of the 18-0 drubbing by India, and look to put up a creditable performance. ^It will be very tough to even be a runner up. India looks to be the best team so far with Pakistan not too far behind. They'll make the semifinals most probably but it will be very hard from there on. Wish them all the best.

India is by far the best team, and Nepal is the 2nd best team. Pakistan is nowhere near as good as India. If you remember, India beat them 6-0 back in January at the South Asian Games.
I don't know what made you think Pakistan was good - they struggled to beat Maldives 2-1 with a last minute penalty. This is the same Maldives team who lost 6-0 to Nepal in their first match. Remaining group matches: Bangladesh v Bhutan - Bangladesh beat Bhutan 7-0 in a friendly just before the tournament, so this should be a comfortable win to send Bangladesh to the semi-finals. India v Sri Lanka - India beat Sri Lanka 8-1 back in January, and they should have a similar result today. That means the last 2 matches will decide who wins the group and who finishes bottom. Sri Lanka should beat Bhutan and India should beat Bangladesh (they beat them 7-0 in January). This will leave the final positions like this: 1. India 2. Bangladesh 3. Sri Lanka 4. Bhutan In the other group, Pakistan and Maldives should both beat Afghanistan, and Nepal should beat Pakistan (they beat them 7-0 in January), which will leave the final group like this: 1. Nepal 2. Pakistan 3. Maldives 4. Afghanistan Semi-finals will be India v Pakistan and Bangladesh v Nepal, almost guaranteed. In January, the results of these matches were India 6-0 Pakistan and Bangladesh 0-1 Nepal. India then won the final 3-1 against Nepal. So, Bangladesh may have a small chance of reaching the final. Bangladesh score 9, India 7 Two games, sixteen goals, nine of which was scored by the home team, a bright winter's sun and a full house of enthusiastic fans rocking the stadium; there was hardly a better place to be yesterday than at the Cox's Bazar Zilla Stadium in this seaside town on the fourth day of the SAFF Women's Football Championship. Bangladesh were imperious in their 9-0 triumph, India dismissive in their 7-0 victory as both sides eased into the semifinals, even before what is now an academic group clash on Friday. For Bangladesh, striker Aungmra Ching Marma struck a hattrick while Sabina Khatun, Farhana Khatan and Suinu Pru Marma scored two each as the hosts dispatched Bhutan by a 9-0 scoreline. A beaming Aungmra Ching spoke of her delight at scoring her first hattrick: “Being a striker, I wanted to score in this match since I missed out in the first match,” said the teenager. And score she did. Bangladesh never looked like scoring the eighteen that India blasted past the hapless Bhutanese but there were still goals aplenty. But even as the strikers scored almost at will, the player who caught the eye most was defender Farhana Khatun. Tall and well-built, Khatun not only held the fort strong at the back, but also managed to pop in with two goals, the first of which was an absolute blinder. Bringing the ball out from the back, Khatun unleashed a 30 yard rocket that thundered into the back of the net courtesy of the lightest possible touch off the underside of the bar. But goals are supposedly a liquid currency for Khatun. The Bangladesh coach confirmed that Khatun had played in midfield at the SA Games earlier this year and she had looked likely to get a goal and come very close in the match against Pakistan. But even as the hosts celebrated a thumping victory, there was already one eye on India, as the neighbors too, looked a class apart in their 7-0 win over Sri Lanka earlier in the day. Sasmita Mallik struck a hattrick in a little under sixty minutes to take her tournament tally to ten, while Bala Devi, Pinky Bompal and Manpreet Kaur chipped in with a goal apiece. Despite being taken off by the coach after completing her hattrick, the 21-year old Orissa striker was not complaining. “I am happy. The others needed to get some game time. So I don't have any complaint at being substituted,” expressed Sasmita. Coach Shahid Jabbar was not fully satisfied though with the team's performance: “I rested a few of the girls for this match but even then I expected better from the reserves,” said Jabbar. “Next up are hosts Bangladesh who have improved a lot since the last time we played. 'Bangladesh need to have a league'
Monika Staab, a former player and currently a FIFA instructor, was recently in Cox's Bazar for the inaugural SAFF Women's Football Championship. The 51-year-old's playing career expanded from her native Germany to other parts of Europe at a time when women's football was just taking roots, while her coaching career led her to the pinnacle of success. For the last four years, she has been working as a FIFA consultant and has been to 55 countries in Asia and Africa to develop technical and organisational aspects of the game. The Daily Star Sport's Atique Anam caught up on Monika prior to her departure for her country to discuss about the ongoing tournament, the current state of women's game in this region and the ways of improving it. Daily Star Sport (DSS): What is your impression of the tournament? Monika Staab (MS): It's a great opportunity for the woman footballers of this region. For newcomers like Afghanistan, it's a great opportunity to learn and a chance for girls to show that they also can play the game. This tournament will hopefully help promote and support women's football in this region. DSS: What are the obstacles to growth of women's football in this region? MS: Lack of money, lack of interest, lack of support, and lack of manpower. DSS: What exactly is needed to get the women's game going? MS: The most important thing is to play more matches, play competitive matches, have a women's league, play the game in all cities. DSS: How was the situation back in Germany 40 years ago when you started playing? MS: Well, it wasn't easy either. We were only allowed to play 20 minutes twice a week, we had to play with lighter and smaller balls, and we were not allowed to use studs. Later they had to change the protocol to allow us play which was in around 1970. Four years later we had our first league and we had our first national team in 1984. DSS: Which team impressed you most in this tournament? MS: I was very impressed by the performance of Nepal, and I wasn't expecting it since they don't have a league there. India too, as everyone knows, they are the strongest side. DSS: Why do you think India are so much ahead of the others? MS: They have a lot of development work going on, they have a league with lots of people involved, a fulltime manager who is paid, and an administrator solely for women's football, which you wouldn't find in many federations. DSS: How did you see the Bangladesh team? MS: Bangladesh have some very good individual players, but they lack match experience. They need to play on a regular basis which is why they have to have a league. DSS: Which players caught most of your attention? I think our girls have the talent but due to lack of commitment by the board they won't be able to go far. Look at how organized India is compared to all the other teams. It's crucial we start focusing on the development of women's football. If there is more commitment we could see this team doing well in the near future.

In January, Bangladesh managed to lose only 1-0 to Nepal in the South Asian Games. So, it's not impossible, but it will be very difficult. I would expect, in all honesty, a 3-0 or 4-0 win for Nepal. Bangladesh will therefore need to defend very well. I would also expect India to score at least 6 against Pakistan in their semi-final, and perhaps even as many as 10.
I think it would be good to have a 3rd place match in this tournament, but it doesn't look like there is one scheduled. It would probably be Bangladesh v Pakistan. Teams at this level need all the practice matches they can get so they can compete on the Asian stage. After this, Bangladesh will play in the 2012 Olympic qualifiers where they will host one of the preliminary round groups. Bangladesh has been drawn with India and Uzbekistan, and all matches will be played in Dhaka. Uzbekistan are about the same as India in terms of quality, so this will be a very hard 2 matches for Bangladesh. The matches are on 18th March 2011 (v India) and 20th March (v Uzbekistan). India will play Uzbekistan on 22nd March. The group winners will reach the next stage of qualifying. Bangladesh has now firmly established themselves as the number 3 team in South Asia, and they must now work on closing the gap between themselves and Nepal. If not, then it won't be long before the other 5 teams in the region catch up on Bangladesh. Even a league with as little as 4 teams would be a start. Even if all the teams are based in Dhaka. It would be a start. It would allow the players to play some regular matches to keep up their fitness levels and improve their focus. And one final thing - one important reason (which wasn't mentioned above) that India is so far ahead of the rest, is because they have been playing as a national team since the 1980s - that's almost 30 years of a head start.
