Pakistan announce squad for first two ODIs

30 March 2008 Pakistan have left out Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif from the team for the first two one-day matches against Bangladesh. Umar Gul and Rao Iftikhar have been recalled to the 15-man squad.

Akhtar is facing a disciplinary committee for criticising the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over contracts while Asif faces fitness problems.

"Akhtar is due to appear before a disciplinary committee so he was not considered while Asif has not been cleared on fitness by the team management," chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said.

Pakistan have also recalled Bazid Khan who played one Test and three ODIs in 2004-05 due to his fine form with bat in the recently concluded Pentangular Cup.

The five-match series starts with a day-night match in Lahore on April 8.

Pakistan squad Shoaib Malik (capt), Salman Butt, Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal (wk), Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, Sohail Khan, Wahab Riaz, Fawad Alam, Bazid Khan, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk).

So the early reports suggesting key players' exclusion and trial of youngsters were completely false then? I am scared now.

Very strong line up. Wont be easy playing Sohail Tanvir for the first few matches, unless our boys get used to his action at the earliest. Sohail Khan is the bowler to watch out for. Fast bowler who is been demolishing teams in Pakistan both in FC cricket and List A matches.

i think at first they will ensure there is no surprise defeat to BD.

so they are going with full strenth with BD and will make sure they win both those games.

they will realize how good they are and how bad BD are and depending on the results and performances later they will bring in the youth players.

From what I have seen in the Zimbabwe series, none from Sohail Khan or Wahab Riaz are any better than Shahadat, if not worse. The trick is we can't let those guys get away with short pitched lolly pops on flat wickets.

Scoring against Sohail Tanvir is bit difficult, but he is not a threat if you don't go after him. Gul and Anjum ? Lets see how well they have recovered from injuries.

here in this context bd is like ireland that visited us recently! this is pakistan and in their own backyard (not that it matters)! i find it nothing wrong to go there with humbleness and bravery at the same time to show nobody but our own selves that we came here to play some good game of cricket with some good world class cricketers in a country who is so passionate about their cricket!

good squad..bowling batting everything perfect...but I think Yousuf and YK are only gonna play the first three matches just to secure the series first...and then the youngsters will come in...Sohail Khan and Wahab Riaz are the ones to watch out for....and obviously Gul will lead the bowling attack...hope he'll rock

Dont really care who plays for pakistan.
odu modu jodu, for couldnt care less.

Its about us and how our boys perform.
If they can realise thier ability and have a proper application, this team should not be hard to beat.

only question is, does our players believe the same?

Nasir Jamshed, Sohail Khan and Wahab Riaz made their debut in the recently concluded series against Zimbabwe. All of them played at the age group level for Pakistan.

Fawad Alam was the captain of the U-19 and Pakistan Academy team. He made his debut against Sri Lanka las year in Abudhabi.

Sarfraz Ahmed is a back up wicketkeeper, he made his debut against India last year.

Pakistan got scared

They probably didn't forget that we also beat Zimbabwe 5-0 in 2006. And most of our players were new and fared better than the Pak team against them. We got them all out in 2/3 matches which Pakistan failed to do.

Anyways. I'm hoping for a good series.

We have to target Afridi, Younus & Yousuf.

Jamshed is crap. He was lucky to survive in many occations. Zimb bowlers were crap with their poor line and length.

While announcing the 16-man squad Salahuddin Ahmed, head of the selection committee, said that players such as Yasir Hameed, Yasir Arafat, Faisal Iqbal, Naumanullah, Abdur Rauf, Kamran Hussain, Junaid Zia, Yasir Ali, Umair Khan - who have all performed well on the domestic circuit - would be considered for the next three ODIs.
So they are going to give the new comers a chance after the 2nd match.. TOO scared

BTW Miraz bhai, its a 16 member squad not 15.

I thought Pakistan would want to win the series first! Isn't a bit too risky for the Paki...!!? Didn't we win a series against Zimbabwe after losing the first 2 matches?!!!

I think so too. Nafees, aftab and ash should play him cautiously.
